Callander - Stirling District
Callander war memorial is a mercat cross type monument standing in the square on the main street opposite the Rob Roy centre.
The bronze panel features the figurative relief of a Highlander carrying the fiery cross, the traditional means of rallying the clan at times of danger and war.
Below - A photo of one of my old postcards of the Callander memorial from my collection.

I noticed this piece in the People's Journal (Perthshire Edtn.)
CALLANDER OFFICER DEAD
Mr & Mrs Brickman, Invergartney House, Callander, have received intimation of the death of their seventh son, Captain Noel Brickman, Cameron Highlanders. The gallant captain, who was only 20 years of age, was a cadet at Sandhurst Military College when the war broke out, his conspicuous abilities and bravery gaining him rapid promotion.
Mr and Mrs Brickman only a month or two ago, lost another gallant son in the war (Lieut. H. Brickman, Scotish Rifles); whilst another was taken prisoner at Kut.
I have now looked more closely at the names on this memorial and confirm a three fold loss;

From ‘The Scotsman’ - Monday, 12th September 1921, page 9
Callander
The Callander war memorial is designed after the style of an old Scottish rnercat cross, with rustic steps and base, and a round shaft surmounted by the lion rampant. On the sides of the large block supporting the shaft are fixed bronze panels modelled in bas relief with appropriate inscription.
Provost Dow presided at the unveiling ceremony. The memorial was unveiled by the Right Hon. the Earl of Ancaster, Superior of the Burgh of Callander. The prayer of dedication was offered by the Rev. T. Burnett Peter BD, minister of the parish of Callander.
Viscount Esher GCB GCVO on behalf of the subscribers handed over the custody of the memorial to the Town and Parish Councils, and the Provost of Callander and the Chairman of the Parish Council accepted custody.
This article also mentions another memorial unveiled in Callander the same day
After the ceremony the memorial erected by the Comrades of the Great War was unveiled in the Memorial Room of the Red Triangle Club by the Right Hon. the Earl of Ancaster. Dr Harvey, Commandant of the Comrades, presided. _________________ Scottish Monuments & Memorials |
