ARCH. G. HASTIE CPL. 4th A&SH.
Archibald Hastie – age 33 – Corporal (4/9448) 1/8th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Born 1885 in Dumfries.
Son of David Halbert Hastie and of Jane Mary (Gracie) Hastie of Dumfries.
Husband of Margaret Robert (Halliday) Hastie who he married in 1908 in Glasgow.
Missing in Action – 23 July 1918.
Commonwealth War Grave – Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France.
He is also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.
The 4th was a reserve battalion and (I think) the 4/ in his service number indicates that he was a former soldier (a reservist)
He enlisted in Coatbridge(probably mobilised) in August 1914. _________________ Ken |

The Argylls had two special reserve battalions - 3rd based at Stirling and the 4th based at Paisley. Most regiments had only one - a 3rd battalion - and their numbers were prefixed 3/.
Reservists were attached to these battalions if there were too many for the 1st and 2nd battalions in the event of war, but I don't think it guarantees he was a former regular reservist.
Special Reserves also served in them and they were a bit like Territorial Force volunteers but with different Ts & Cs. For example the 3rd Bn Seaforth Highlanders was based in Stornoway and the local men who were pre-war part-time volunteers in that regiment served in that unit rather than the 4th (Ross-shire) Bn Seaforth Highlanders TF.
