I saw this at the time. Quite staggering how many people treat memorials with such disrespect. This is an extreme example but many are defaced and damaged all the time. Just look at Mains in Dundee.
Another item on the BBC I haven't watched yet was the danger of metal thieves targeting war memorials. This isn't a surprise but at this time of year any theft will not be replaced in time for 11th November.
It's not new though. In Whitley Bay a few years ago a gang drove up and stole all the bronze panels in broad daylight because everyone assumed they worked for the council. We've had something similar in Fife with memorial gates.
Hopefully if there are any silver linings out of these stories is that it will make people more vigilant and question anyone removing any metalwork from a memorial in daylight.
Of course if the scrap dealers were a bit more scrupulous then there wouldn't be a market for bronze name panels, SMLEs and wreaths etc

It's one of the most extreme cases I've seen.
And I was really hacked off to read the alleged comments of the policeman who said:
" and, if it were malicious, to bring those responsible before the courts.'
If it were malicious?
Enough of the "political correctness", the damage to the memorial couldn't have been anything but malicious. Jeez......... _________________

When some of these panels go it does mean that the names on the memorials are the only record so just thought I'd say doing the project means that information has been recorded.
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM. |

What astonishes me is the scale of the problem and the seeming lack of public outcry.
I saw the recent BBC news item and decided to Google for more info. A search for war memorial vandalised returned nearly 28,000 responses. |
