PTE. DOUGLAS A. C. BREND, DURHAM L. I.
PTE. NORMAN, R. W. CARRUTHERS, COLDSTREAM GUARDS.
These two men are listed on the Kirkpatrick-Durham Parish War Memorial but I cannot connect them to the area (or even to Scotland Exclamation

)
There are a couple of "odd" co-incidences but I'm not sure that they mean anything Confused

Any help , ideas, etc.- please.

CWGC has Private D. Brend (4731) 5th Durham Light Infantry. 8/11/1916
SDGW has this man as Douglas Brend, Born Croydon. Res. Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
The only birth I can find in Croydon is March Q 1892 for Alexander Douglas C. Brend and an A.D.C. Brend is listed on the Ashby WM. It is possible that the third initial is for Carruthers.
There is a marriage in Croyden in 1886 between Frederick William Brend and Agnes Maxwell Carruthers.
Have just discovered that he is listed on the Holy Trinity Church Memorial in Ashby as Douglas A C Brend.

CWGC has Private Norman Roy Waugh Carruthers (19136) 2nd Coldstream Guards. 27/8/1918. Age 20 Son of Mrs. Annie Carruthers of Bradford.
SDGW has this man as above and born Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicester but no Res. details.
There is a birth in March Q 1898 in Ashby but indexed as Roland Roy W Carruthers.

The local Roll of Honour has entries for both men but no details and I have not found anything in the local newspapers and I'm running out of ideas and I'm worn-out and I'm sad. Help.

The name Carruthers is associated with Crocketford House, Crocketford (in Kirkpatrick Durham parish) in around 1900.

Given that one is a Carruthers and the other (possibly) has Carruthers as a third forename, I would guess that they may have been born here and moved or perhaps even be first generation born away, ie their parent(s) were from Crocketford House.

If the Carruthers at Crocketford House were on the war memorials committee or made a substantial contribution towards the memorial, this may have influenced them being added to what they saw as the traditional family home.

Sorry, I don't have the time to trawl the censuses.

My thought was that maybe Brend's mother and Carruthers' father were perhaps brother and sister, born in Crocketford house and it is their father (the soldier's grandfather) who put the names forward to be entered on the memorial closest to the family's traditional home.

Absolutely no evidence of course, but it seems worth trying to make that link.

Brend is listed on the Ashby de la Zouch memorial, at least I guess that is him with the initials round the wrong way.

Agnes Maxwell Carruthers was born in Kirkpatrick Durham on the 27th July 1854. She was the daughter of George Carruthers and Margaret Johnston of Durhamhill House, Kirkpatrick Durham. She married Frederick William Brend in Croydon in 1888. There was one child from the union - Alexander Douglas Carruthers Brend born 1892 in Thornton Heath, Surrey. Agnes died in Northampton in 1924.
I'm not finding any reference to Durhamhill House but I've no doubt that Agnes or another family member will have put Douglas' name forward due to the family connection to the area or that fact he spent a good deal of time in the locality, perhaps on holiday.

*Agnes had eight siblings, 5 brothers, 3 sisters.

The only Annie Carruthers I can see at present is born circa 1873 in Kirkpatrick Durham son of Robert & Agnes Carruthers of Crocketford House. Robert being the brother of George Snr from the previous post. Wondering if the casualty alluded to is illegitimate. Looks like Annie left for America at some point but I have no access to this area of Ancestry.

Mark - thank you so much for your research. It has led me to
Alexander Johnston Carruthers married Annie Waugh in Bradford June Q 1894. Obviously the parent of Norman Roy Waugh Carruthers.

Alexander, age 11, (and the rest of the gang) was at Durhamhill in 1861.

Aha, well done Ken. Glad its all come together! Perhaps the local library at Ashby may have casualty reports for the men too.
