I take it as a chaplain rather than as a soldier, he does not feature in the CWGC listings. At least I never found him.

No, he should still be on CWGC but I cannot find him either.
He is listed on the Scottish Ministers memorial in St Giles http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=880&highlight=chaplains

Mark
Was just about to post the record.
Not sure how he came to be Campbell-MacGregor but it shows his NOK approved the detail. _________________ Jim

St Oran's was one of the Gaelic speaking churches in Edinburgh. It was on Broughton Street. St Oran's merged in 1948 with the other (known as St Columba's U.F. during WW1).
The new Highland Church merged again twice and is now part of the congregation of Greyfriars.
Unfortunately we don't have St Oran's war memorial which lists 13 names on the forum.
'The Kirk's of Edinburgh' book says he is from Strachur and gives Campbell as his middle name.
It's interesting he is listed as being the chaplain to the 4th Camerons because they were broken up in April 1916. |

The Scotsman article about the unveiling comes up with 18 as the quantity of names on the memorial.

It is 18. I copied the wrong number when reading from this thread.
I think I may have a transcription of it from about 20 years ago. I must try and find it.

From the Midlothian Advertiser of 14 February 1922:
A GOLFERS' WAR MEMORIAL
Lieut.-Colonel John B. Wood, D.S.O., M.C., unveiled the Kingsknowe Golf Club War Memorial at Colinton, Edinburgh. The memorial is comprised of a brass tablet mounted on oak, and the plate bears the names of twenty-seven members of the club - a comparatively new one - who lost their lives on active service. |
