MICHAEL GAFFNEY. ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS
Michael Gaffney – age 29 – Private (M2/232062) 236th Siege Brigade Ammunition Column Mechanical Transport, Army Service Corps.
Michael was a dealer living with his family at Bothwell House, Haddington when he enlisted in October 1916. He went to France in January 1917. Michael died of multiple injuries in the 6th Casualty Clearing Station at Pernes after his Albion truck was hit by a French Railway engine at a level crossing between Hallicourt and Barlin.
Born 1898 in Haddington. Son of the late Francis Gaffney (died 1901) and of Margaret (Reilly) Gaffney of Haddington. Husband of Elizabeth (Young) Gaffney of Bothwell House, Hardgate, Haddington who he married in 1908 in Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 21 July 1918 and buried in Pernes British Cemetery, France.


THOMAS GAFFNEY. ROYAL SCOTS
Thomas Gaffney – age 22 – Private (21411) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Thomas was a gardener living at Reilly's Place, Nungate, Haddington when he enlisted in March 1915. He was posted to the 17th Royal Scots in France in March 1916 and transferred to the 13th Battalion in May. Thomas died a month later in the 33rd Casualty Clearing Station in Bethune.
Born 1894 in Crichton, Newbattle, Midlothian. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Sinclair) Gaffney of Reilly's Place, Nungate, Haddington.
Died of Wounds on 21 June 1916 and buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France.


ROBERT GOODALL. ROYAL SCOTS
Robert Goodall – age 25 – Private (30103) Depot, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Robert enlisted as Private (539) in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in June 1909. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November. He was transferred as Private (S/20753) to a Labour Company in March 1917 and later to the 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Robert became ill and was discharged from the army in June 1918 and was awarded a Silver War Badge (415214). He died at home in Haddington.
Born 1894 in Haddington. Son of Robert and Elizabeth (Peaston) Goodall of Meadow Park, Haddington.
Died on 14 September 1919 and buried in Haddington Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington and on the Rugby Club memorial.

JOHN GRAY. ROYAL SCOTS
John Gray – age 22 – Private (40876) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was a slater when he enlisted.
Born 1895 in Yester and Gifford Parish, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Mary Jane (Learmouth) Gray (died 1911) and of Thomas Gray of 32 High Street, Haddington. Husband of Janet Thomson (Marshall) Gray who he married in 1914 in Haddington. Janet became Mrs. Alfred Gilbert Dickenson when she re-married in 1918 in Haddington and later they lived in Wolverhampton.
Killed in Action on 12 April 1917 and buried in Point-Du-Jour Military Cemetery, Athies, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


GUNr. R.W. GRAY. R.G.A. ROYAL ARTILLERY
Robert Watt Gray – age 33 – Gunner (72829) 138th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Robert was a carter living at East Garleton, Haddington when he enlisted in March 1916. He landed with his Battery at Salonica in northern Greece in August 1916. Robert was originally buried in a front-line cemetery and was re-interred in Kalinova Military Cemetery before being moved again in December 1920.
Born 1885 in Garvald, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late James Gray, Church Officer at Garvald (died 1914) and of the late Agnes (Watt) Gray (died 1902) His sister Alison Gray of Ugston, Haddington and of Mungoswells, Drem, Haddingtonshire was named as his next of kin.
Died of Wounds on 17 September 1918 and buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Garvald Parish War Memorial.

Thought to be:
William Gray – age 21 – Private (40137) 10th/11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
William enlisted as Private (1588) in the 8th Royal Scots and was transferred to the HLI in France.
Born 1896 in Dirleton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian as William Trotter Gray.
Son of George and Alison (Gray) Gray of Haddington.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

Coy.S.M. WILLIAM GRAY. GORDON HIGHLANDERS
William Gray – age 36 – Sergeant (S/7895) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was a gamekeeper living with his family at Westside, Penicuik, Midlothian when he enlisted in December 1914. He had previously served as Private (6754) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and may have been a reservist as he joined his battalion in Belgium that same month. He was promoted to Sergeant in June 1915.
Born 1879 in Garvald, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Thomas and Jane (Robertson) Gray of Amisfield Lodge, Haddington. Husband of Agnes (Hunter) Gray of Westside, Penicuik and of Abbey Mill, Athelstaneford who he married in 1909 in Haddington.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Athestaneford Parish and Penicuik War Memorials.


Sgt. EDWARD GULLAND. ROYAL SCOTS
Edwin Eyre Gulland – age 39 – Sergeant (9) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Edwin was a mercantile cashier living with his family at Sidegate, Haddington. He was a member of the Territorial 8th Royal Scots and he was mobilised in August 1914, landing with the 1/8th Royal Scots at Le Havre in November 1914.
Born 1876 in Edinburgh. Son of the late William Gulland (died 1898) and of the late Christina (Osborne) Gulland (died 1902) Husband of Isabella Mary (Kirk) Gulland who he married in 1903 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 16 May 1915 and buried in Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


WILLIAM HENDERSON. KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS

William Henderson – age 26 – Private (22823) 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a joiner living with his parents at 8 Dalgety Street in Edinburgh when he enlisted in January 1916. He was discharged from the army in March as “unlikely to become an efficient soldier.” In about 1917 the family moved to Haddington and William died of tuberculosis at the family home at 31 Hope Park.
Born c.1892. Son of Robert and Agnes (Goodall) Henderson who had married in 1890 in Humbie, East Lothian.
Died on 5 February 1918.

L.Cpl. ARTHUR HEPBURN. ROYAL SCOTS
Arthur Hepburn – age 19 – Private (10595) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
In 1901 Arthur Bruce was living with his uncle and aunt George Sanderson Hepburn and Jessie (Bruce) Hepburn in Haddington. He enlisted as Arthur Hepburn in February 1910 at the age of 14 and was appointed a Drummer in December 1910. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion in France in October 1914. Arthur died in the 8th Casualty Clearing Station at Bailleul.
Born 1896 in Edinburgh as Arthur Ogilvie Bruce. Son of Clara Bruce of 77 High Street, Haddington. Adopted son of George Sanderson Hepburn of St. Martin's Gate, Haddington.
Died of Wounds on 16 February 1915 and buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery, Nord, France.


ROBERT HODGSON. ROYAL SCOTS
Robert Hodgson – age 33 – Private (2174) 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
Robert of Fettes Row, Edinburgh enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1882 in Ayr as Robert Ramage Hodgson. Son of the late John Hodgson (died 1907) and of Madaline Ramage (McNiven) of 40 Hardgate Street and of 46 Howgate, Haddington.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


SERGt. G.T. HOGG. CANADA. 2nd DIVISION
George Tulley Hogg – age 33 – Lance Corporal (464594) 29th Battalion, 2nd Division, Canadian Infantry.
George served his apprenticeship as a cabinet-maker in Haddington and was a carpenter when he enlisted in Vancouver, British Columbia in October 1915 as Sapper (50288) in the Canadian Overseas Railway Construction Corps but he was found to be medically unfit and he was discharged. After an operation he re-enlisted and sailed from Canada with the 62nd (Vancouver) Battalion in December 1915. George was posted to the 29th Battalion in France in May 1916 and promoted to Corporal in September but within three weeks he was killed.
Born 1883 in Hutton, Berwickshire. Son of John and Jane (Tulley) Hogg of Lodge Street, Haddingtom.
Killed in Action on 26 September 1916 and buried in Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont, France.

William Horsburgh – age 46 – Private (3/3147) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
William joined his battalion in France in May 1915.
Born 1870 in Tranent, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late George Horsburgh (died 1880) and of Georgina (Souness) Horsburgh (died 1893) of Gladsmuir, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Brother of James Horsburgh of Stevenson North Lodge, Haddington.
Missing in Action on 15 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


Sec.Lt. JOHN W. HUTCHISON. ROYAL SCOTS

John William Hutchison – age 23 – Second Lieutenant, 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was educated at the Knox Institute and enlisted as Private (1178) in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots. He landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November 1914. John was commissioned in July 1916 and attached to the 1/7th Battalion in Palestine.
Born 1894 in Haddington. Son of the late John Hutchison (died 1910) and of Margaret (Berry) Hutchison of "Fernleigh," Station Road, Haddington.
Died of Wounds on 26 November 1917 and buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Knox Institute memorial and on the Rugby Club memorial in Haddington.


LIEUt. HARRY M. JARDINE. ROYAL SCOTS
Henry Marshall Jardine – age 28 – Lieutenant, 6th Battalion attached to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
Harry was educated at the Knox Institute in Haddington before becoming an auctioneer and valuer in Edinburgh. He enlisted as a Private in September 1914 and was commission in November. He was promoted to Lieutenant in the 1/6th Royal Scots in March 1915 and landed with his battalion in Egypt in September to be part of the Western Frontier Force. He was wounded against the Sennussi in December 1915 and after his recovery he was Adjutant of a Base Camp in Alexandria until he moved to France in April 1916 where he joined the 2nd Royal Scots.
Born 1888 in Haddington. Son of James and Margaret Burnside (Whitson) Jardine of 34 Court Street, Haddington and of Lauriston Gardens, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 23 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Knox Institute memorial.

William Johnston – age 22 – Lance Corporal (10515) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
William of Whitelaw, Haddington joined his battalion in France in January 1915 but he was killed 10 days later at La Bassee.
Born 1893 in Millerhill, Newton, Midlothian. Son of the late John Johnston (died 1905) and of Helen (Binnie) Johnston of West Mains, Whittinghame, Haddingtonshire. Helen died 1918 in Haddington. Brother of John Johnston of 6 Lome Street, Leith, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 25 January 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.


MICHAEL KELLY. BLACK WATCH – R.H.

Michael Kelly – age 28 – Private (S/178721) Depot, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Michael was a farm servant at Colstoun Mains, Haddington when he enlisted as Private (S/14406) in the Seaforth Highlanders in February 1916. He was mobilised in June and transferred to the Black Watch in October before joining the 10th Battalion in Salonica, northern Greece in December. He was badly wounded in May 1917 and evacuated to hospital in Malta where his right foot was amputated. He was then evacuated home and was discharged from the army in July 1918 after an artificial limb was fitted at the Edinburgh War Hospital at Bangour. He was awarded a Silver War Badge (422161). Michael died of pneumonia at his home at Colstoun Mains.
Born 1890 in Haddington. Son of the late John Kelly and of Mary (White) Kelly of Colstoun Mains, Haddington.
Died on 5 February 1919.

DAVID KERR. EMPLOYMENT COMPANY
David Kerr – age 26 – Private (31248) Royal Scots Fusiliers transferred as Private (234386) to an Employment Company of the Labour Corps.
David had been a draper living at High Street, Burntisland, Fife. He died of pneumonia in the Dunfermline & West Fife Hospital.
Born 1893 in Whitekirk, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Christina Paterson Kerr (died 1897) and of George Lawrence Kerr of St. Martin's Gate, Haddington and of Stenton, East Lothian.

William Kerr – age 27 – Private (106066) 217th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
William was a ploughman when he enlisted in February 1917. He joined his Company in France in August 1917. William died in the 55th General Hospital in Boulogne.
Born 1890 in Yester, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Christina Paterson Kerr (died 1897) and of George Lawrence Kerr of St. Martin's Gate, Haddington and of Stenton, East Lothian.

JAMES LEES. CANADIAN HIGHLANDERS
James Lees – age 23 – Private (420186) 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish) Canadian Infantry.
James was a grocer living with his wife in Winnipeg, Manitoba and he was a member of the local militia, the 79th Cameron Highlanders of Canada, when he enlisted in December 1914. He sailed with the 43rd Battalion from Montreal in June 1915 and landed in France in February 1916. He was wounded and evacuated to University College Hospital in London in May 1916. James joined the 16th Battalion in France on 13 September 1916 but he was killed about two weeks later.
Born 1894 in Glasgow. Son of the late Helen (Lauder) Lees (died 1912) and of James Lees of High Street, Haddington. Husband of Ellen J. (McMechin) Gardner (formerly Lees) of Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.
Missing in Action between 25 and 28 September 1916 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.


WILLIAM LESLIE. ROYAL SCOTS
William Leslie – age 32 – Private (1777) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William joined his battalion in France in October 1915 but he was killed a month later.
Born 1884 in Tranent, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Mary Leslie of Court Street, Haddington who married Robert Hogg in 1908 in Haddington.
Killed in Action on 14 November 1915 and buried in Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

Alexander McCabe – age 20 – Private (29508) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander enlisted as Private (2642) jn the Lothians and Border Horse and he was posted to the KOSB in France.
Born 1896 at Giffordgate in Haddington. Son of Thomas and Margaret (Welsh) McCabe of Gifford Road, Nungate, Haddington and of 5 Abbey Street, Abbeyhill, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 26 February 1917 and buried in Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.


Dvr. P. McCARTAN. R.A. ROYAL ARTILLERY
Patrick McCartan – age 38 – Driver (84550) 12th Battery, 35th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Patrick may have been a reservist as he joined his battery in December 1914 two months after it had landed at Zeebrugge in Belgium. The Brigade moved with the 7th Division to northern Italy in late 1917. In October 1918 the Division played a central role in crossing the Piave, the Battle of Vittoria Veneto and the eventual defeat of Austria-Hungary.
Born 1880 in Prestonkirk, Haddingtonshire. Son of the late Patrick McCartan (died 1906) and of Ann (Hoods) McCartan of Haddington.
Died on Active Service on 1 October 1918 and buried in Montecchio Precalcino Communal Cemetery Extension, Italy.

Cpl. MALCOLM McDONALD. ROYAL SCOTS

Malcolm McDonald – age 39 – Corporal (243317) Highland Light Infantry.
Malcolm had been a forester when he enlisted as Private (202) in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in April 1908. He was mobilised in August 1914 and promoted to Corporal in October. He did not serve overseas and he was transferred to a Training Battalion of the HLI in May 1915. Malcolm became ill at Stobbs Camp in August 1916 and he was eventually discharged from the army in January 1918 as “no longer fir for war service”. Malcolm was working as an asylum attendant when he died of cancer at his home at Hawthornbank, Haddington.
Born 1875 in Garvald, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Daniel McDonald (died 1888) and of Margaret (Thomson) McDonald. Husband of Catherine (Macdonald) McDonald who he married in 1908 in Haddington.
Died on 22 May 1918.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


L.Cpl. SAMUEL M'GUIRE. NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS
Samuel McGuire – age 27 – Lance Corporal (1022) 1/4th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
Samuel was a coal miner in Haltwhistle, Northumberland when he married in December 1910 and he and his wife were living there when their daughter was born in 1912. He joined the Territorial 4th Battalion and he landed with the 1/4th Battalion in France in April 1915.
Born 1889 in Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland. Son of the late Robert and Margaret (Johnston) McGuire. (both died by 1911) Husband of Elizabeth McKay McGuire of Church Street, Haddington who he married in 1910 in Haddington.
Died of Wounds on 19 September 1916 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Haltwhistle War Memorial.


JAMES McKAY. SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS
James McKay – age 31 – Private (S/10302) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
James had served his apprenticeship as a baker in Haddington. He joined his battalion in France in July 1915 and in December they moved to Mesopotamia, landing at Basra late in the month.
Born 1885 in Haddington as James MacKay. Son of Andrew and Grace (Bell) McKay of Nungate, Haddington. Husband of Ellen or Helen (Rape) McKay who he married in 1905 in Haddington.
Missing in Action on 22 April 1916 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.

George John McLaughlin – age 32 – Boatswain, Merchant Navy.
George was educated at the Knox Institute in Haddington and in 1911 he was a 3rd Officer in the Merchant Service, living with his mother Alice Maud Steil and his step-father David Thomson Steil at 33 Hope Park, Haddington. He was resident in Dundee when he was reported as having drowned at sea. Born 1886 in Haddington. Son of the late William Ormsby McLaughlin (died 1892) and of Alice Maud (Millar) McLaughlin of Hope Park, Haddington.
Lost at Sea on 27 October 1918.
Also named on the Knox Institute memorial and on the Trinity Church memorial in Haddington.


CLEMENT MESSER. SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS
Clement Messer – age 23 – Private (S/3620) 8th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Clement landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1892 in Currie, Midlothian. Son of James and Elizabeth (McKellar) Messer of Alderston, Haddington.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

Hugh Munro – age 19 – Private (10317) 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Hugh enlisted as Private (8826) in the 5th Reserve Regiment of Cavalry and joined the 1st Black Watch in France in July 1915 but he was killed three months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1896 in Haddington. Son of the late Hugh Munro (died 1899) and of Jane (Duncan) Munro of St Ann's Place, Haddington.
Missing in Action on 13 October 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

JOHN P. NEILL. ROYAL SCOTS
John Porteous Neill – age 45 – Private (16658) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was a house painter living at 17 Distillery Cottages, Haddington when he enlisted in December 1914. He joined his battalion in France in August 1915 but he was killed almost two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1870 in Tranent, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of David and Margaret (Porteous) Neill of Tranent. Husband of Mary (Smith) Neill who he married in 1892 in Gladsmuir, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Tranent War Memorial.


GUNr. T. O'DONNELL. R.G.A. ROYAL ARTILLERY
Thomas O'Donnell – age 24 – Gunner (190415) Royal Garrison Artillery.
Thomas was a farm servant at Gateside Farm, Haddington when he enlisted in December 1917. He went to France in March 1918 but he contracted dysentery and in September he was evacuated to the 3rd Western General Hospital in Cardiff where he died some months later.
Born 1895 in Haddington. Son of George and Elizabeth (Rourke) O'Donnell of Seton Garden, Longniddrie, Haddington. Husband of Rebecca (Scott) O'Donnell of 7 Church Street, Haddinton who he married in 1917 in Edinburgh. From 1921 Mrs Thomas Ainslie of Manorhead, Stow, Midlothian.
Died on Service on 3 January 1919 and buried in Haddington Roman Catholic Graveyard. (CWG)


J.S. OGILVIE. ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS
James Scott Ogilvie – age 19 – Private (51125) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Born 1898 in Haddington. Son of James and Jane (Cowie) Ogilvie of 68 Hardgate Street, Haddington.
Missing in Action on 28 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.

James Couper Ormiston – age 19 – Private (325341) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was educated at the Knox Institute in Haddington.
Born 1898 in Haddington. Son of Peter and Janet (Couper) Ormiston of 44 High Street, Haddington.
Killed in Action on 22 March 1918 and buried in Combles Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

GEORGE ORR. KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS
George Orr – age 31 – Private (40329) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George had served his apprenticeship in the Bank of Scotland in Haddington from April 1900 and in 1911 he was a bank clerk living with his eldest brother James and his family in Croydon. London. He was resident in Streatham, London when he enlisted as Private (1884) in the 8th Royal Scots before being posted to the KOSB in France.
Born 1885 in Haddington. Son of James and Isabella (Robertson) Orr of Market Street, Haddington. Brother of William Orr of Victoria Park, Haddington.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Bank of Scotland memorial in Edinburgh.


R. PATERSON. ROYAL SCOTS
Robert Paterson – age 26 – Private (41032) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Robert was a ploughman at Lennoxlove Acredales, Haddington and a Private in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots when he married in December 1915.
Born 1892 in Aberlady, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Walter and Agnes (Nisbet) Paterson of Lennoxlove Acredales, Haddington. Husband of Helen Allan (Brotherston) Paterson who he married in 1915 in Haddington.
Missing in Action on 10 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


TOM PEACOCK. SOMERSET LIGHT INFANTRY
Thomas Peacock – age 35 – Private (36070) 2/5th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry.
In 1901 Thomas was serving his apprenticeship as a saddler in Haddington and he was working in Callander, Perthshire when he married in 1908. He and his wife set up home in Church Street South in Callander by 1911. At the time of his death Thomas was an Acting Sergeant attached to the Supply &Transport Corps of the Indian Army.
Born 1883 in Haddington. Son of the late John Peacock (died 1885) and Jane (Forbes) Peacock of Haddington. Husband of Honor (Tremlett) Peacock of 10 Appin Road, Alexandra Park, Glasgow who he married in 1908 in Long Ashton, Somerset.
Died on Service on 2 January 1919 and buried in Maala Cemetery, Aden, Yemen.

DAVID PETTIGREW. ROYAL TANK CORPS
David Pettigrew – age 21 – Private (306268) 11th Battalion, Tank Corps.
David enlisted as Private (2247) in the Royal Engineers and was posted to the Tank Corps in France.
Born 1897 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire as David Bain Pettigrew. Son of John Pettigrew and of the late Mary Jane (Bain) Pettigrew (died 1911 in Haddington)
Killed in Action on 3 September 1918 and buried in Dury Crucifix Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Trinity Church memorial in Haddington.


VICTOR R.T. PITCHER. GORDON HIGHLANDERS
Victor Richard Thomas Pitcher – age 20 – Private (2494) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Victor was educated at Penicuik, at Peebles and at the Knox Institute in Haddington and was a bugler in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots. In August 1914 he was rejected for overseas service and he enlisted in the Gordons in September. He joined his battalion in France in December 1914.
Born 1896 in Mandalay, Burma. Son of Q.M.S. William George Pitcher and Mary Anne Galbraithe (Fry) Pitcher of Alexandra Place, Haddington.
Missing in Action on 25 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Knox Institute memorial and on the Trinity Church memorial in Haddington.

William George Pitcher – age 56 – Quartermaster Sergeant (325263) Depot, Royal Scots.
William enlisted in August 1883 and served in Malta, India and Burma. He was appointed RSM to the 6th Volunteer Battalion of the Royal Scots in June 1900 and became the Orderly Room Clerk to the Territorial 8th Royal Scots. He re-enlisted as Colour Sergeant (1147) in August 1914 and landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November. He became ill and was evacuated to the 2nd Scottish General Hospital in Glasgow in November 1915. After he had recovered he was posted to the GHQ Records Office in Rouen in June 1916 but a re-infection caused a rupture of his bladder and he was evacuated to the Royal Infirmary in Manchester where he died during an operation.
Born 1861 in Southwark, London. Son of the late William and Mary Ann (Biddis) Pitcher. Husband of Mary Anne Galbraithe (Fry) Pitcher of Alexandra Place, Haddington who he married in 1889 in Roslyn Chapel, Lasswade, Midlothian.
Died on Service on 24 December 1917 and buried in Haddington Cemetery. (CWG)

ALEXANDER L. PLENDERLEITH. ROYAL SCOTS
Alexander Lyall Plenderleith – age 19 – Private (59560) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Alexander was a vanman in Haddington when he enlisted in March 1916. He was mobilised in June 1917 and joined the 17th Royal Scots in France in April 1918 but he was wounded at the end of May and treated at the 3rd General Hospital at Le Treport. Alexander was then posted to the 11th Battalion in July but he was killed just over a month later.
Born 1899 in Leith, Edinburgh. Son of George and Janet (Lyall) of 2 Poldrate, Haddington.
Killed in Action on 19 August 1918 and buried in Meteren Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


GEORGE PURVES. ROYAL SCOTS
George Purves – age 19 – Private (873) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
George was a member of the Territorial 8th Royal Scots and he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November 1914.
Born 1895 in Haddington as George Alexander Purves. Son of Alexander and Margaret (Hepburn) Purves of Bridge Street, Nungate, Haddington.
Missing in Actiom on 13 March 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


L.Cpl. W. RAEBURN. SCOTTISH RIFLES – CAMERONIANS
William Raeburn – age 36 – Private (266555) 1/7th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
In 1901 the family were at Fala South Mains Cottage in Midlothian and William's parent were still in Fala in 1911.
Born 1887 in Saltoun, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian.
Son of William and Isabella (Cameron) Raeburn of Humbie, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Husband of Marion (Meston) Raeburn of Slateford, Haddington who he married in 1914 in Haddington.
Died of Wounds on 23 November 1917 and buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Fala and Soutra War Memorial.

JOHN B.S. RAMAGE. GORDON HIGHLANDERS
John Ramage – age 22 – Private (907) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
John enlisted in November 1911 and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne on 14 August 1914. One of the first British formations to move to France as part of the original British Expeditionary Force and one of the first into action. John died a month later in the 14th Field Ambulance but his burial place was lost.
Born 1892 in Pencaitland, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian as John Sandilands Ramage. Son of the late Isabella (Duncan) Ramage (died 1894) and of James Ramage of 6 Brown Street, Haddington.
Died of Wounds on 9 September 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.

Robert Ramage – age 25 – Lance Corporal (692) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Robert was with his battalion in Cairo in August 1914. They returned to the UK and then landed at Zeebrugge in October 1914.
Born 1890 in Whittinghame, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Isabella (Duncan) Ramage (died 1894) and of James Ramage of Sandy's Mills, Haddington.
Missing in Action on 16 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.

William Brown Ramage – age 29 – Private (26028) 2nd Battalion, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment)
William was a chauffeur at Milfield Hill House in Kirknewton Parish near Alnwick in Northumberland when he enlisted as Private (M2/222083) in the Army Service Corps in September 1916 and he went to France that same month. He was transferred to the West Riding Regiment in September 1917. William died in the 4th Casualty Clearing Station at Westvleteren.
Born 1888 in Whittinghame, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Isabella (Duncan) Ramage (died 1894) and of James Ramage of Beanston Gardens, Haddington. Husband of Helen Ann Stewart (Wilson) Ramage of 10 Kirk Street, Leith, Edinburgh who he married in June 1914 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 11 October 1917 and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Kirknewton Parish War Memorial in Northumberland.
