JOHN ANDERSON. KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS
John Anderson – age 19 – Private (40308) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John enlisted as Private (1433) in the Royal Scots and was posted to the KOSB in France.
Born 1898 in Haddington. Son of Archibald and Christina (Black) Anderson of Hardgate Street, Haddington.
Died of Wounds on 15 September 1916 and buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-l'Abbe, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


ADAM BALD. KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS
Adam Bald – age 21 – Private (22687) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1894 in Haddington. Son of John Denholm Bald and of Margaret (Turnbull or Watt) Bald of 122 Newbigging, Musselburgh, Midlothian.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


SAPr. W. BEATTIE. ROYAL ENGINEERS
Thought to be:
William Beattie – age 39 – Sapper (155816) 173rd Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers.
William as Private (15103) joined the 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) in France in October 1915. At some point he was transferred to the Royal Engineers.
Born 1878 in Tranent, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian as William Beattie Murphy. Son of William and Mary Ann (Murphy) Beattie. Husband of Ellen (McDonald) Beattie who he married in 1896 in Dalkeith, Midlothian when he was a coal miner in Rosewell, Midlothian.
Killed in Action on 27 June 1917 and buried in Bard Cottage Cemetery, Belgium.


WALTER BELL. KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS
Walter Wilson Bell – age 21 – Private (13849) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter was a ploughman at Camptoun Farm, Haddington when he enlisted and he joined his battalion in France in March 1915.
Born 1893 in Prestonpans, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Mary Ann (Wilson) Bell (died 1894) and of James Bell, of Prestonpans and step-son of Frances (Doig) Bell who married James in 1896.
Died of Wounds on 30 April 1915 and buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France.

JOHN BLACK. ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS
John Black – age 50 – Private (M2/051328) 5th Corps Troops Mechanical Transport Company, Army Service Corps.
John died suddenly in the Bagthrope Military Hospital, Nottingham.
Born 1868 in Dunbar, East Lothian. Son of George and Christina (Wood) Black of Court Street, Haddington. Husband of Susan Jeffrey (Harkness) Black of 2 Duck Row, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire who he married in 1903 in Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 14 September 1918 and buried in Jedburgh (Castlewood) Cemetery, Roxburghshire. (CWG)
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


SERGt. WILLIAM BOYD. SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS
William Boyd – age 27 – Lance Sergeant (10070) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
In 1911 William, aged 22, was serving with the 1st Seaforths in India. He joined his battalion in France in May 1915.
Born 1890 in Newton, Midlothian as William Rankin Boyd. Son of the late John Muirhead Boyd (died 1896) and of Helen (Purves) Colquhoun of the Western District Hospital Lodge in Haddington who had married Robert Colquhoun in 1899.
Killed in Action on 11 April 1917 and buried in Brown's Copse Cemetery, Roeux, France.


HENRY BRADFORD. SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS
Henry Bradford – age 26 – Private (S/9357) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Henry was a groom at Fountain Bridge in Edinburgh when he enlisted as Private (3/7707) in the Seaforths Reserve in September 1914, However he was discharged in December as unlikely to be an efficient soldier. He obviously re-enlisted as he joined the 8th Seaforths in France in October 1915. At some point he transferred to the 1st Battalion in Mesopotamia.
Born 1891 in Haddington. Son of Alexander and Christina Mary (Pearson) Bradford. Husband of Helen (Ramsay) Bradford of 127 West Port, Edinburgh who he married in 1914 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 5 November 1917 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.

CAPt. G. C. BRIGGS. ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS
George Clark Briggs – age 36 – Captain, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
George was educated at Edinburgh Academy, at Malvern College from 1893 and at Clare College, Cambridge in 1896. He was commissioned in September 1898 in the 4th (Cambridge University) Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment and was transferred to the RSF in May 1899. He served in the South African Wars and was promoted to Captain in April 1905. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 14 August 1914 but he was killed a month later.
Born 1878 in Leith, Edinburgh. Son of Francis Briggs and of Ester White (Munro) Briggs of Huntington, Haddington.
Killed in Action on 14 September 1914 and buried in Vailly British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Edinburgh Academy memorial and on the Malvern College and on the Clare College memorials


LIEUt. COL. ALEXANDER BROOK. ROYAL SCOTS
Alexander Brook, Volunteer Officers' Decoration – age 50 – Lieutenant Colonel, 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Alexander was educated at the Knox Institute at Haddington before becoming a Student of the Arts at Edinburgh University from where he graduated in 1887. He became a Writer to the Signet in 1891 and practised in Haddington. He had been associated with the local Volunteers and Territorials since 1886 and was promoted from Major to Lt. Colonel in command of the 1/8th Battalion when they landed in France in November 1914.
Born 1865 in Haddington. Son of the late John Brook (died 1910) and of Annie (Luckie) Brook of Primrose Bank, Haddington.
Died of Wounds on 19 May 1915 and buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Knox Institute memorial, on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and Roll of the Fallen.

Francis Alexander Burnet – age 26 – Lieutenant, 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Francis was educated at the Knox Institute at Haddington. He was commissioned in the local Territorial 8th Royal Scots in June 1915 and joined the 1/8th Battalion in France in January 1916. He was promoted in July 1917.
Born 1892 in Haddington. Son of the late James Stuart Burnet (died 1893) and of Euphemia Scott Burnet of Church Street, Haddington. Husband of Nannette (Harris) Burnet of Ravensheugh, Bromborough, Wirral, Cheshire and of Knoll Road, Bexley, Kent who he married in March 1918 in Bromborough.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Trinity Church memorial, on the Knox Institute memorial and on the Rugby Club memorial in Haddington, and on the Bromborough Parish War Memorial.


Coy.S.M. GEORGE BURNS. ROYAL SCOTS
George Burns – age 39 – Company Sergeant Major (325457) 1/7th Battalion, Royal Scots.
George enlisted as Private (1627) in the Territorial 2/8th Royal Scots in December 1914. He was posted as a Sergeant to the 13th Royal Scots in France in August 1917 and promoted to CSM in October. He was evacuated home due to pneumonia in January 1918 and posted to the 1/7th Royal Scots in France in July 1918. However George became ill again and was being evacuated from Le Havre when his hospital ship, HMAT Warilda, was torpedoed by the German submarine UC-49. George was drowned.
Born 1879 in Ormiston, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of George and Christina (Scott) of Brown Street, Haddington. Husband of Annie Lumsden (Brown) Burns of 17 Hope Park, Haddington who he married in 1906 in Spott, East Lothian.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 3 August 1918 and named on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.

Born 1884 in Ormiston, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of George and Christina (Scott) of Brown Street, Haddington. Husband of Mary Grandison (Livingstone) Burns of 35 Sidegate Street, Haddington who he married in 1911 in Macmerry, Gladsmuir, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 23 April 1917 and buried in Crump Trench British Cemetery, Fampoux, France.

LEO JOHN BUTLER. ROYAL SCOTS
Leo John Butlers – age 24 – Private (352974) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
In 1901 Leo was living as a nephew with the Malarky family at Nungate in Haddington. Leo enlisted as Private (2553) in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry and was posted to the 1/9th Royal Scots in France.
Born c.1893 in Brooklyn, USA.
Son of ?
Missing in Action on 8 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


THOMAS CAMPBELL. SCOTS GUARDS
Thomas Campbell – age 24 – Private (16218) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Born 1894 at Amisfield, Haddington. Son of John and Marion Campbell of Amisfield West Lodge, Haddington. Brother of Maggie Tulloch Campbell of Amisfield West Lodge, Haddington.
Died of Wounds on 6 November 1918 and buried in Villers-Pol Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


S.LT. CHAS.F.A. CHALLIS. R.N.R. ROYAL NAVY
Not listed by CWGC but under review.
Charles Frederick Aquila Challis – age 24 – Sub-lieutenant, Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Navy.
Charles joined the merchant navy in July 1909. He was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant in March 1915 but was diagnosed with tuberculosis and discharged in August. His commission was re-instated in March 1917 but he died of TB at the family home of Waterloo House in Haddington.
Born 1893 in Wynberg, Cape Colony, South Africa. Son of the late Elizabeth (Benns) Challis (died 1895) and of James Challis of Waterloo House, Poldrate, Haddington, and step-son of Mary Ann (Adams) Challis who married James in 1897 in Leeds.
Died on 7 March 1917 and buried in Portobello Cemetery, Midlothian.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.

John Richard Chappell, Distinguished Conduct Medal – age 24 – Sergeant (S/11167) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
John joined his battalion in France as a Private in October 1915 and a year later as a Sergeant he was awarded a DCM “For conspicuous gallantry in action. Accompanied by a lance-corporal, he went out and disposed of an enemy sniper who had caused several casualties. Later, he went out beyond our observation posts and dispersed' a party of the enemy with bombs.”
Born 1893 in Humbie, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian as Chapple. Son of George and Agnes (Cockburn) Chapple of Brownshill, Haddington. Husband of Elizabeth (Millar) Chappell who he married in 1914 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 24 November 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Alexander Lillie Cleghorn – age 26 – Lance Corporal (18436) Royal Scots Fusiliers transferred as Private (175269) to the Labour Corps.
Alexander had been a chauffeur when he enlisted. He collapsed and died at the Easter Road Barracks in Edinburgh when serving with the 322nd Home Service Labour Company.
Born 1891 in Kilmadock, Perthshire.
Son of William Mabon Cleghorn and Mary (Lillie) Cleghorn of 1 Hope Park and of the Stables, Haddington.
Died on Service on 24 May 1917 and buried in Haddington Cemetery. (CWG)

JAMES COUPER. CANADIAN MOUNTED RIFLES
James Couper – age 42 – Private (116853) 47th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
James was farming at Port Haney in British Columbia when he enlisted in the 11th Canadian Mounted Rifles at Victoria, BC in May 1916. He sailed from Canada in July 1916, was transferred to the 47th Battalion in England and joined the battalion in France in February 1917.
Born 1874 in Haddington. Son of the late James Couper (died 1909) and Margaret (Crombie) Couper of 13 Market Street, Haddington.
Missing in Action on 6 May 1917 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.


PATRICK COURTNEY. ROYAL DEFENCE CORPS
Patrick Courtney – age 52 – Private (9125) 204th Protection Company, Royal Defence Corps.
Patrick was a farm servant when he enlisted as Private (20011) in the Royal Scots. Protection Companies took over the duties of the Supernumerary Territorial Force Companies and came into existence in April 1916. Patrick died of chronic bronchitis in the Military Hospital, at Craigleith, Edinburgh.
Born 1866 in Mohill, County Leitrim, Ireland. Son of the late Michael (died 1906) and Bridget (Gilchrist) Courtney (died 1915) of Mohill. Husband of Mary (Reynolds) Courtney of Blackmains and of Amisfield Mains, Haddington who he married in 1897 in Haddington.
Died on Service on 6 March 1917 and buried in Haddington Roman Catholic Graveyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Morham Parish War Memorial in East Lothian.


PETER COWE. HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY
Peter Cowe – age 34 – Private (40892) 17th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Peter served his apprenticeship as a draper in Eyemouth, Berwickshire and he and his wife were employed in the drapery business when they married in Haddington in 1913 . He enlisted as Private (2284) in the Royal Scots and was transferred to the HLI in France.
Born 1883 in Eyemouth as Peter Nisbet Cowe. Son of William and Jeanie (Nisbet) Cowe of Eyemouth. Husband of Christina Stewart (Thomson) Cowe of 11 Newton Port, Haddington who he married in 1913 in Haddington.
Killed in Action on 18 November 1916 and buried in New Munich Trench British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, France.
Also named on the Eyemouth War Memorial and on the St John's United Free Church memorial in Eyemouth.

Adam Lindsay Cranston – age 30 – Private (40808) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Adam was a baker, living at 21 High Street, Haddington when he married in June 1913.
Born 1889 in Haddington. Husband of Margaret (Hoggan) Cranston of Station Road, Slamannan, Stirlingshire who he married in 1913 in Tranent, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1916 and buried in Serre Road Cemetery No.1, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


SERGt. ALEXANDER CRANSTON. ROYAL ENGINEERS
Alexander Cranston – age 38 – Sergeant (103604) 84th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
Alexander was a wheelwright when he enlisted June 1915. He went to France as a Sapper in October 1915 and joined his Field Company in August 1916. Alexander was promoted to Sergeant in August 1917.
Born 1879 in Leith, Edinburgh. Husband of Rosanna (Dickson) Cranston of Hercus Loan, Musselburgh who he married in 1901 in Musselburgh.
Missing in Action on 26 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial. France.


SAPr. J.B. CRANSTON. ROYAL ENGINEERS
James Buchan Cranston – age 28 – Sapper (69417) Royal Engineers.
James was a stone mason in Haddington when he enlisted in March 1915. However he was discharged from the Army in July as “not likely to become and efficient soldier” due to illness contracted while on service. James died of tuberculosis at his home in Court Street.
Born 1887 in Haddington. Husband of Annie Crookston (Bird) Cranston (latterly Wallace) of 9 Court Street, Haddington who he married in 1908 in Musselburgh.
Died on 18 May 1916 and buried in Haddington Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.
His son Captain James Bird Cranston, Royal Scots, died on 22 May 1945 and is buried in Haddington and is named on this memorial.


Coy.SERGt. MAJOR JOHN B. CRANSTON, D.C.M. CAMERON HIGHLANDERS
John Buchan Cranston – age 34 – Company Sergeant Major (5651) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was an asylum attendant at Bangour Village Hospital, Uphall, Linlithgowshire when he married in February 1913. As a reservist he was recalled in August 1914 and as a Lance Corporal he joined the 1st Camerons in France in September. He was wounded and evacuated home in October. After he had recovered he was posted to the 7th Battalion and was Mentioned in Despatches for gallant and distinguished work in early 1916. John was also recommended for a Distinguished Conduct Medal but this was not officially awarded.
Born 1882 in Leith, Edinburgh. Husband of Agnes Robertson (Thomson) Cranston of Sunnybank Cottage, Bridgend, Bathgate who he married in 1913 in Bathgate.
Killed in Action on 16 July 1916 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Bathgate War Memorial.

Francis Croally – age 28 – Private (S/12049) 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Born 1889 in Haddington. Son of the late Thomas Croally (died 1912) and Bridget (Dolan) Croally of Hardgate Street, Haddington.
Died on Active Service on 6 August 1917 and buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.

Peter Crombie – age 21 – Lance Corporal (250525) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
In 1911, as Peter C. Veitch aged 15, he was an apprentice weaver living at 6 Brown Street, Haddington as the nephew of Francis and Mary Gordon.
Born 1895 in Belhaven, Dunbar, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian as Peter Crombie Veitch. Son of the late Janet (Crombie) Veitch (died 1902) and of Alexander Hamilton Veitch of Edinburgh. Nephew of Mary (Crombie) Gordon of Haddington and of 7 Balcarres Street, Edinburgh who was named as his next of kin.
Killed in Action on 23 August 1918 and buried in Douchy-Les-Ayette British Cemetery, France.

James Hall Cunningham – age 20 – Corporal (41025) 17th Battalion, Royal Scots.

CAPT. CHRISTOPHER E.G. DAVIDSON. THE BUFFS
Christopher Edmund Grant Davidson – age 29 – Captain, 1st Battalion attached to the 6th Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment)
Christopher was educated at Charterhouse School and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst from where he was commissioned in August 1905. He was promoted to Lieutenant in March 1909 and to Captain in August 1914. He served in South Africa from 1915 and in Hong Kong from 1908. He was based at Canterbury at the outbreak of war and went to France with the 6th Battalion in June 1915. Christopher was killed at Hulloch where the 6th Battalion were virtually wiped out.
Born 1886 in London. Son of Lt. Col. Christopher Middlemas Davidson (His Majesty's Bodyguard - Born Yester, Haddingtonshire) and of Jessie Rose Oliphant (Williams) Davidson of 14 Victoria Park, Dover.
Killed in Action on 13 October 1915 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Charterhouse School memorial.

and his cousin – grandsons of Lt, Col. Sir David Davidson of Haddington who died in 1900.

CAPt. FRANCIS C. DAVIDSON. SOUTH WAZERISTAN M.
Francis Charteris Davidson – age 27 – Captain, Indian Army Reserve of Officers, formerly 110th Mahratta Light Infantry, attached to the South Waziristan Militia Military Police and Levies.
Francis was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh and at University College, Oxford. He was admitted to the Indian Civil Service in October 1914 and commissioned in the Indian Army in July 1916. Francis was promoted to Captain in March 1917 but he was killed in action on the North-West Frontier at Sarwakai and buried in Dera Ismail Khan Cemetery.
Born c.1890 in Poona, Bombay, India. Son of the late Henry Chisholm Davidson (died 1893 in Poona) and of Ada Annie (Betham) Davidson of Grosvenor Street, Edinburgh and of Westbourne Park Villas, Paddington, London.
Killed in Action on 10 May 1917 and named on the Delhi Memorial (India Gate) India.
Also named on the Fettes College and the University College War Memorials.

Sec.LIEUt. JAMES DAWSON. BLACK WATCH – R.H.
James Dawson – age 25 – Second Lieutenant. 3rd (Reserve) Battalion attached to the 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
James was educated at Broughton School in Edinburgh before becoming a Student of the Arts at Edinburgh University in 1910. He graduated MA in 1913 and was a school teacher when he enlisted as a Corporal in the 11th Gordon Highlanders in November 1914. He was posted as a Sergeant to the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion of the Royal Scots and was commissioned in June 1915. He was posted to the 2nd Black Watch which moved from France to Mesopotamia, landing at Basra in December 1915. James was invalided home due to diabetes and died of tuberculosis at the family home in Edinburgh.
Born 1892 in Haddington. Son of John Patterson Dawson and of Ann (Craig) Dawson of 19 Avondale Place, Edinburgh.
Died on 2 April 1917 and buried in Aberlady Parish Churchyard, East Lothian. (CWG)
Also named on the Broughton School memorial and on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and Roll of the Fallen.


M. DANE. ROYAL SCOTS
Thought to be:
Michael Deane – age 26 – Private (10239) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
Michael enlisted in January 1908 and in 1911 he was serving with the 1st Royal Scots in India. He returned from Allahabad with the battalion in October 1914 and landed in France in December. He was evacuated home with frost-bite in January 1915 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion in France in April. Michael was badly wounded in mid-June and evacuated to the 1st London General Hospital in Camberwell, London where he died.
Born 1889 in Haddington. Son of the late Mary (Padden) Deane (died 1899) and of Patrick Deane of 82 Market Street, Haddington.
Died of Wounds on 1 July 1915 and buried in Haddington Roman Catholic Graveyard. (CWG)


WILLIAM DICK. SCOTS GUARDS
William Dick – age 36 – Private (12779) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
William and his family lived in Hardgate Street, Haddington when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France in October 1915. William lost both of his legs and died in the 10th Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek.
Born 1880 in Broxburn, Uphall, Linlithgowshire. Son of William and Ellen or Helen Dick of Davidson's Mains, Cramond, Midlothian. Husband of Margaret (Reilly) Dick who he married in 1911 in Dunbar, East Lothian.
Died of Wounds on 20 June 1916 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Cramond Parish War Memorial.

James Dickson – age 34 – Private (49216) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a baker in Haddington when he enlisted as Private (S/343067) in the Army Service Corps in December 1915 He was transferred to the 2nd Royal Scots in France in May 1917 and he died in the 20th General Hospital at Camiers.
Born 1884 in Gullane, Dirleton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late John Dickson (died 1890) and of Jane Ann (Tait) Dickson of Waterside, Haddington, and step-son of James Duncan who married Jane in 1897 in Dirleton. Husband of Christina Ann (Turner) Dickson of Gifford Road, Haddington who he married in 1907 in Haddington.
Died of Wounds on 27 May 1918 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.

Robert Dickson – age 28 – Private (15127) 11th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Robert landed with his battalion at Boulogne in September 1915 but they sailed for Salonika in northern Greece in November 1915.
Born 1887 in Gullane, Dirleton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late John Dickson (died 1890) and of Jane Ann (Tait) Dickson of Waterside, Haddington, and step-son of James Duncan who married Jane in 1897 in Dirleton.
Died of Wounds on 22 November 1916 and buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


LIEUt. JOHN B. DODS. ROYAL SCOTS
John Ballantyne Dods – age 38 – Lieutenant, 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was educated at the Knox Institute in Haddington and in 1901 aged 21 he was an apprentice seedsman in his father's business in Haddington. He was a Private in the Calcutta Light Horse when he was commissioned in the Royal Scots in January 1916 and he joined the 1/8th Battalion in France in April 1917. John was promoted in July 1917 but died the following year in the 16th Casualty Clearing Station at Lilliers.
Born 1879 in Haddington. Son of the late Charles Shirreff Dods (died 1901) and of Isabella Grieve (Ballantyne) Dods of 7 Chalmers Street, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 11 April 1918 and buried in Lillers Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Knox Institute memorial.

NEIL KANE DONAGHAN. SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS
Neil Kane Donaghan – age ? – Private (241597) 9th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Neil enlisted as Private (25660) in the Highland Light Infantry and was posted to the 9th Seaforths in France.
Born ? in Carronashogue, Co. Antrim, Ireland. Son of Jane Mullen of 25 High Street, Haddington.
Killed in Action on 18 October 1917 and buried in Bard Cottage Cemetery, Belgium.


JOHN DOWER. MACHINE GUN CORPS
John Dower – age 28 – Private (86075) 16th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
John enlisted as Private (27383) in the Cameron Highlanders and was posted to the MGC. He was initially reported missing but his remains were recovered from the battlefield in October 1919.
Born 1889 in Haddington. Son of Henry and Annie (Lawrie) Dower of Sidegate, Haddington.
Killed in Action on 21 March 1918 and buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gouy, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


Coy.S.M. ARCHIBALD DRUMMOND. SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS
Archibald Drummond – age 33 – Company Sergeant Major (S/43868) 1/4th Battalion (Ross Highland) Seaforth Highlanders.
Archibald served as Sergeant (351464) in the 10th (Cyclist) Battalion, Royal Scots, Also as (S/22721) in the Black Watch and as (S/24376) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders before he joined the Seaforths.
Born 1884 in Athelstaneford, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Elizabeth Wood (Young) Drummond (died 1886 in Athelstaneford) and of David and Mary Drummond of Meadow Park, Haddington. Husband of Maggie Duncan (Whitecross) Drummond of 14 Hope Park, Haddington who he married in 1908 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 18 June 1918 and buried in Anzin-St. Aubin British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.

WILLIAM FAICHEN. ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS
William Faichen – age 28 – Saddler (T4/143096) 848th Horse Transport Company, Army Service Corps.
William was a saddler when he enlisted in December 1915 and he was mobilised in February 1916. He landed in Salonica in northern Greece in August 1916. William died of dysentery.
Born 1892 in Haddington. Son of Thomas and Janet (Dudgeon) Faichen, of Meadow Park, Haddington.
Died on Service on 21 November 1918 and buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.


ALEXANDER FAUNT. ROYAL SCOTS
Alexander Faunt – age 22 – Private (473) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Alexander was a plumber, a member of Haddington Rugby Football Club and a member of the Territorial 8th Royal Scots. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November 1914 as part of the machine gun section. Alexander was buried in Fleurbaix Churchyard but his grave was lost and he is commemorated at Souchez.
Born 1892 in Haddington. Son of Harry and Mary (Kinghorn) Faunt of Distillery Park, Haddington.
Killed in Action on 1 March 1915 and named in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington and on the Rugby Club memorial.


JOHN FITZGERALD. ROYAL IRISH FUSILIERS
John Fitzgerald – age 32 – Private (16373) 5th Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers.
John enlisted as Private (3604) in the 11th Royal Scots in August 1914 but was discharged as medically unfit. He obviously re-enlisted as he landed with the 5th RIF at Gallipoli in August 1915. The battalion moved via Mudros to Salonica in October and two years later moved to Egypt for service in Palestine. They sailed from Port Said for service in France, arriving at Marseilles in May 1918.
Born 1886 in Haddington. Son of Mary (Collins) Fitzgerald and of Thomas Fitzgerald of Nungate, Haddington and of 26 Castle Street, Dunbar, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 29 September 1918 and buried in Sailly-Labourse Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

JOHN FITZPATRICK. ROYAL SCOTS
John Fitzpatrick – age 34 – Private (34778) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was a grocer in Haddington when he enlisted as Private (68564) in the 145th Company of the Machine Gun Corps. He transferred to the 13th Royal Scots in France.
Born 1884 in Haddington. Son of the late Catherine (Gilroy) Fitzpatrick (died 1899) and of Michael Fitzpatrick of 10 Brown Street, Haddington. Husband of Mary (Cullen) Fitzpatrick of Hardgate Street, Haddington who he married in 1912 in Inveresk and Musselburgh.
Killed in Action on 27 August 1918 and buried in Hersin Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


MURDOCH FRASER. BLACK WATCH – R.H.
Murdoch Macrae Fraser – age 32 – Private (S/9745) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Murdoch was a ploughman living in Humbie, Haddingtonshie/East Lothian when he married in 1906. He joined his battalion in France in October 1915.
Born 1884 in Dundee. Son of the late Peter Fraser and of Isabella (McLean) Fraser of Kingoodie, Invergowrie, Angus. Husband of Catherine Beaton (Munro) Fraser of 2 Rosehall, Haddington who he married in 1906 in Humbie.
Missing in Action on 14 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


ANDREW D. FULTON. ROYAL SCOTS
Andrew Denholm Fulton – age 27 – Private (31166) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Andrew was a golf green-keeper in Haddington when he married in January 1914.
Born 1890 in North Berwick. Son of the late Robert Fulton (died 1904) and of Elizabeth (Ramage) Fulton. Husband of Isabella Jack (Gow) Fulton who he married in 1914 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 22 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the North Berwick War Memorial and on the Abbey Church memorial in North Berwick.
