Sticking in some european countries as place of birth in geoffs SNWM search engine gives up some interesting surnames.

These two in particular I couldn't find on CWGC. Not necessarily a case of them being a "non-comm" as they may have served under an alias name or different spelling.

Can anyone find them?

Did a search using just 'Al' for surname in CWGC in case the name had been anglicized

Second name was a bit more difficult, but...

POLISKIS
Initials: K
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Unit Text: 1st/8th Bn.
Date of Death: 28/09/1918
Service No: 36636
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: XIV. E. 1.
Cemetery: VOORMEZEELE ENCLOSURE No.3

Thanks to http://www.freewebs.com/eltoro1960/pteklemispoliskis.htm for helping identify him.

If you type in Goliskis into Google you get no matches so it looks like SNWM is wrong here.

The 1911 census has a S. ALEXANDROVITCH age 27 and a Collier at No. 20 Drongan Village, Ochiltree, Ayrshire; with his wife, Slaus, and two children, Francais (2) and Edward (1) both born there.
The parent are shown as born in Russian Poland - nationality Russian.
At No.17, also from Russian Poland and also Colliers, are John Adones with his wife Preksida (and two sons born locally) Anton Adones, John Yatz and John Morgen.
A little bit of Lithuania in Ayrshire who would have thunk it. Surprised

An interesting item on the Scottish Mining site might explain why Alexandrovitch does not appear to be listed on any WM.

Poliskis was also a miner - at Newbattle Colliery.
See http://www.freewebs.com/eltoro1960/pteklemispoliskis.htm

He is listed on Newtongrange WM, Midlothian.

Perhaps because this is a recent memorial there wasn't the same prejudice about including "Poles"

Thanks for the background on the story behind the foreign names on some war memorials Ken. Interesting stuff indeed.

Cheers,
Derek.
