Renton - Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, Vale of Leven District
A freestone obelisk with a simple cross carved into the face and polished granit tablets bearing the names of the dead set into the face of the pedestal base. The monument stands beside the primary school and Tobias Smollet monument on the main road running through Renton.
These are old photographs, the memorial has recently been refurbished and a wall built around the back of the memorial to enclose both monuments.

Jim

There are some unusual inscriptions there. I have a few suggestions:

NF would be Northumberland Fusiliers I think.

KSOB must be a mistake for KOSB

DF I suspect is the Royal Dublin Fusliers given a couple of Irish names.

L.R. could be London Regiment

E.S. could be East Surrey Regiment

W.R. could be Welsh Regiment

O.C. Ordnance Corps perhaps?

Regards

Adam

Thanks again Adam. I'm afraid these entries come from some years ago when I first started my database. I'm not an expert on regiments and was taking guesses regarding regiments which I included as I wanted them to appear when I made searches etc.. I've since realised this maybe isn't a good idea but achhh you live and learn Very Happy Some day I'll have to backtrack and make corrections.
I felt it was still o.k. to include them in the posting anyway as you can always skim through my list and then look for the name on the photographs to confirm things.

Jim

It’s great you posting the lists of names. I hope to find the time one of these days to post the transcriptions I have done.
With the names in the text of the posts it means you can use the search facility within the forum to look for names. Ideally every thread would have photos of the memorial, photos of its names panels, a transcription of the panels and then as much information on the people listed as we know taken from various sources such as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database, The Scottish National War Memorial database, the Soldiers Died in the Great War rolls etc.
If we can achieve this it would turn the forum into a database. It’s not something that will happen overnight but by posting the names you are getting things off to a good start.

Regards

Cheers Adam,
Just a thought, maybe it would be a good idea to put a general reference section at the end of the forum and you could post a list of abbreviations which often appear on war memorials with the probable meanings, i.e. H.L.I. = Highland Light Infantry...I know we know what that means but I'm sure a lot of folk have never heard of the H.L.I..

Yes after I posted the last message I thought that an abbreviations post might be useful. I'll look into what we can do.

I note from the list, and have no reason to doubt transcription, which states Donald James was in A&SH but he was in fact in the 6bn Loyal North Lancs. although he had three brothers including my grandfather who was in the A&SH.
Donald was wounded 5 times during 1914-1918 conflicts and was recovering in India 1918 when he drowned.

His younger brother Thomas James is commemorated under WWII? He died in an accidental drowning after falling into the harbour in Lerwick- Dec 1939 .
