Jim

many thanks for all the information. The 'Victory' looks similar to the one on top of the Troon memorial but I suppose most 'Victorys' look like that.

I noticed two names on the memorial:

Lance Corporal McRory David McRory M.M.
Private William McRory Private M.M.

I wonder if they were brothers who both won the MM?

I notice also that Pte Joseph Verbitsky isn't a VC winner, he is in fact Pte J.V.C. Verbitsk. I couldn't find him on the CWGC database though.

Sorry if it isn't clear Adam. I copy and paste these names from my database and the medals column comes after name, rank and service, so when I past these details awards and medals appear on the far right.
Hope that makes sense Confused

Good morning . I read your posting with interest

I have researched medals (1914/ 15 trios ) awarded to John and Allan Scott of Dunbarton . John Freebairn Scott whose name appears on the memorial was killed at Ypres on April 1915 . Details below

1610 Pte. Allan Scott 1/9th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
1611 Pte. John F. Scott 1/9th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders

Pte. Allan Scott, born 26th Nov 1892 and Pte. John Freebairn Scott, born 5th August 1894, sons of Allan and Maggie Scott ‘Margaretville” Victoria Street Dumbarton Scotland were two brothers who joined the 1/9th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders prior to 1914.

On 4th August 1914 their unit was mobilized and proceeded to Bedford as part of the A&SH Bde. Highland Division. The unit proceeded to France on 23rd February 1915 as part of the 81st Bde 27th Division. In April 1915 the 1/ 9th A&ASH were holding trenches at Glencorse Wood near Ypres under constant shelling. On April 29th Pte John Scott was killed in action.

Lennox Herald 8th May 1915
“ Dumbartonshire men on the Casualty List Intimation been received by his parents at Victoria Street, Dumbarton that Private John Freebairn Scott, A Company 1/9th A&SH was killed in action on 29th April near Ypres. His brother in the same regiment, writing home says he sustained a shot wound to the forehead. Private Scott was 20 years of age and had been three years in the Territorials . Prior to the outbreak of war he was engaged as an apprentice engineer in Denny’s yard. “

Unfortunately after the war the army graves service was unable to trace Pte John Scott’s grave and he is commemorated on the Menin gate at Ypres. He is also commemorated in the A.&S.H Memorial book at the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle. Pte Allan Scott survived the war and died in London in 1967.

Died as a result of the wrecking of the Hospital ship Rohilla. He was not a member of the armed forces so he is not included on CWGC because his death is not attributable to enemy action.

(Glasgow Herald 3 Nov 1914)
"Drowned in the wreck of the hospital ship Rohilla, at Whitby, on 31st, John Brown, third engineer, husband of Louie Monkhouse, and sixth son of the late Alexander Brown, Dumbarton."

Derek.
