I think perhaps Gunner Robert Porteous is this man, even though he is in the Army Catering Corps.
No other Robert Porteous' are listed in the war returns, only 3 are listed as dying in Scotland between 1939-1947.

Derek - you were spot on Very Happy
I finally tracked down a more complete newspaper report which detailed his pre-war and war time service with the Royal Artillery.
Robert Porteous of the Army Catering Corps........had been a member of the Royal Artillery's Kirkcudbrightshire Battery of Territorial Army for four years before the war. He had served for nearly six years during the war and at the time of his death was attached to the 314 Battery, 79th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Sadly there was no more information on the cause of his death apart from "a serious accident".
