It's nice to have a memorial listing so much detail about the individuals it commemorates.

Derek

I've seen some others in Berwickshire with a lot of detail, Foulden for one and Preston Recreation Rooms is another. It's very handy for anyone doing any sort of research (assuming the inscriptions are reasonably accurate of course)

Hope you don't mind I thought this pic is slightly brighter to show the detail on the cross.

Admiral Bertram Ramsay was the man who organised Operation 'Dynamo' the evacuation of the B.E.F. and French troops from Dunkirk in 1940. He went on to become the Royal Navy's leading expert in amphibious operations in WWII. He was in command at Dover when the Kriegsmarine made the famous 'Channel Dash' in 1942 when the Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen sailed up the English Channel to make for German ports. Later in the same year Ramsay was deputy commander of naval operations in Operation 'Torch' the allied landings in North Africa. In 1944 he took command of Operation 'Neptune', the naval part of Operation 'Overlord' the allied landing in Normandy. He was planning yet more amphibious landings on the Walcheren Islands in the Netherlands when he was killed in an aircraft crash when on his way to a meeting with Montgomery.

The Scotsman, 1st May 1919

[Seemingly the earliest dedication of a memorial in Berwickshire - scan of the article cuts off both sides of the column but the crux of it comes over].

LEITHOLM MEMORIAL CROSS - ... erected by public subscription in... Berwickshire, as a memorial to 15 men... war, was dedicated in solemn... the Rev T Notman, minister of...

Rev Thomas Notman was of Leitholm UF (the established church is Eccles).

The Buildings of Scotland - Borders, p493

War Memorial. Celtic cross on a two-tier boulder base, c1918.

I happened to come across this paragraph, in the Third Statistical Account of Scotland's Berwickshire volume, regarding the Leitholm memorial.

p175
MODERN MEMORIALS
A fine grey Celtic cross stands at the west end of Leitholm. It is the War Memorial for the First World War and was the first to be erected in Scotland for those who fell in that War.

As noted above - it was unveiled at the end of April 1919... Was it actually the first civic memorial in Scotland, or is that just local wishful thinking?

I think so. The Strath Halladale memorial in Sutherland was erected in early 1919, I have a feeling it was February but I have no notes to hand to confirm it. I'm sure we've had one in Perthshire or Angus which was erected before the Armistice.
