KELSO TOWN and DISTRICT WW1 WAR MEMORIAL.

CORPL. JOHN GRAHAMSLAW.
John Grahamslaw – age 30 – Corporal (10357) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901, aged 16, John was working as a carter on a farm and was employed by a grocer in Kelso when he enlisted. In 1911, age 25, he was serving with the 1st KOSB in India and in August 1914 was in Lucknow. The battalion returned to England via Egypt in December 1914 and then sailed from Avonmouth, landing at Cape Helles on Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. John was killed a day later.
Born 1885 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Janet (Small) Grahamslaw (died 1885) and of the late Thomas Grahamslaw (died 1902) Step-son of Jane (Hall) Grahamslaw who married Thomas in 1888 in Yetholm. John named his sisters and his brother Robert as his legatees.
Missing in Action on 26 April 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial.


PTE. ANDREW J. GRAY.
Andrew James Gray – age 33 – Private (858) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 fishing rod maker in Kelso and he was still there with his family in 1911. As a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB he was mobilised in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1881 in Kelso. Son of the late Janet (Robson) Gray (died 1908) and of Andrew Gray of The Butts, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. JOHN GUTHRIE.
John Guthrie – age 20 – Private (46206) 8th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment.
John was employed in his uncle Thomas Simpson's butcher business in Yetholm, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in the 6th Dragoon Guards in May 1917 He transferred to the Leicestershire Regiment in August and joined his battalion in France in September. John was killed at Epehy near St. Quentin.
Born 1898 in Yetholm. Son of the late Andrew and Helen (Simpson) Guthrie (both died 1904) John named his sisters as his legatees.
Missing in Action on 22 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
Also named on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial.

PTE. PETER HAIG.
Peter Outerson Haig – age 18 – Private (204658) 1/4th (Ross Highland) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Peter enlisted as Private (8178) in the 4th King's Own Scottish Borderers in November 1915. He was posted to the Seaforth Highlanders in France and died in the 23rd Casualty Clearing Station at Lapugnoy.
Born 1899 in Kelso. Son of Charles Haig and Alexina Simpson (Outerson) Haig of 6 Forrestfield, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 13 April 1918 and buried in Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church.

PTE. WILLIAM HAIG

William Haig – age 20 – Private (301530) 5th/6th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William became a postman in November 1913 and was based in Perth when he enlisted. He was posted as Private (3954) to the 5th/6th Royal Scots and served as a signaller from early 1917.
Born 1897 in Earlston, Berwickshire. Son of Charles Haig and Alexina Simpson (Outerson) Haig of 6 Forrestfield, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 8 March 1918 and buried in Canada Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church.


PTE. GEORGE A. D. HALL.
George Hall – age 18 – Private (30/58 ) 25th (2nd Tyneside Irish) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
Born 1898 in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire as George Alexander Hall. Son of Robert Oliver Hall and of Rebecca Douglas (Drummond) Hall of The Joy, Graden, Linton, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Linton Parish War Memorial.

PTE. JAMES HALL

James Hall – age 23 – Private (45631) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was on his way to be demobilised when he fell from an electric tramcar and was crushed by the vehicle. He died in the 44th Casualty Clearing Station in Cologne.
Born 1895 in Whittingham, Haddingtonshire, East Lothian. Son of Robert Oliver Hall and of Rebecca Douglas (Drummond) Hall of The Joy, Graden, Linton.
Died on Service on 27 February 1919 and buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Linton Parish War Memorial.
The 9th (Scottish) Division was selected to advance to the Rhine as part of the occupation force and crossed into Germany on 4 December 1918, taking up a position in the Cologne bridgehead. In late February 1919, the original units left and were demobilised, being replaced by others.

The same man ? – see notes below about the Morebattle and Yetholm memorials.

PTE. WALTER HERIOT HALLIDAY.
Walter Herriot Halliday – age 30 – Private (9625) 53rd Company, Machine Gun Corps.
In 1901 Walter, aged 13, was living with his brothers and sister at Tofts Cottage in Morebattle, Roxburghshire.
He was an under-gamekeeper at Clifton Park when he enlisted as Private (6519) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in November 1914. He went to France in April 1916 and was transferred to the MGC. Walter was killed near Langemarck but his body was recovered from the battlefield and he was re-interred at the Cement House in September 1919.
Born 1887 in Whitsome, Berwickshire. Son of the late Robert (died 1895) and Margaret (Herriot) Halliday (died 1892) formerly of Swinton Quarter Farm, Berwickshire. Husband of the late Isabella (Renwick) Halliday (died October 1916) who he married in August 1915 at Morebattle Tofts while he was in training with the 13th Reserve Battalion at Tain.
Brother of Mrs Janet Rae of Primside Toll, Yetholm, Roxburghshire, the guardian of his children.
Killed in Action on 22 October 1917 and buried in Cement House Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Morebattle Parish War Memorial as Cpl. W.H. Halliday, A.&S.H. and on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial as Walter Halliday, M.G.C.

PTE. WILLIAM HALLIDAY.
William Halliday – age 23 – Private (201538) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a ploughman at Lurdenlaw Farm, Sprouston, where his father was the farm steward. He enlisted as Private (8646) in the 1/4th KOSB. He was wounded in May 1917 and transferred to the 6th KOSB.
Born 1895 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of William and Agnes (Keddie) Halliday of Lurdenlaw, Sprouston.
Killed in Action on 30 September 1918 and buried in Dadizeele New British Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Sprouston Parish War Memorial and on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial..


L/CORPL. ADAM HANDYSIDE.
Adam Handyside – age 22 – Lance Corporal (29282) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Adam was a fishing rod maker when he enlisted.
Born 1894 in Kelso. Son of James and Isabella (Horsburgh) Handyside, of Mayfield, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 8 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


ACT.CORPL. JOHN HANVEY.
John Hanvey – age 36 – Corporal (18149) 8th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
John had been a gamekeeper with Admiral Sir William Hay of Nether Chatto, Hownam, Roxburghshire. He enlisted in Kelso in February 1915 and joined his battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915 but was killed a month later.
Born 1881 in Hackney, London. Son of the late Henry Monk Hanvey (died 1884) and of Elizabeth Fuller (Thomas) Hanvey of Peckham House, Peckham, London. Husband of Elizabeth Elliot (Ronaldson) Hanvey of 2 Garden Terrace, Dunstan, Crester, Alnwick, Northumberland who he married in 1907 in Kelso.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Hownam Parish War Memorial.

PTE. JOHN HARDY.
John Hardy – age 40 – Private (41099) 1st Squadron, Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry)
John had served for 12 years with the 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Dragoon Guards including in the South African War. He was a postman, aged 36, when he re-enlisted as Private (9213) in the 1st Reserve Regiment of Cavalry in September 1914 and he rejoined his old unit in France in November. The 1st Squadron MGC was formed in February 1916 for 1st Cavalry Brigade. Machine gun sections taken from 2nd and 5th Dragoon Guards and 11th Hussars. John joined them in June.
Born c.1878 in Kelso. Son of Thomas Hardy or Hardie of the livery stables, 12 Bowmont Street, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 23 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.


PTE. WALTER C. HENDERSON.
Walter Currie Henderson – age 23 – Private (200967) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter enlisted in January 1915 and as Private (7708) he joined his battalion in Egypt. He served in Palestine before they moved in France in April 1918.
Born 1895 in Kelso. Son of John and Jane (Currie) Henderson of Rosebank Lodge, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 4 October 1918 and buried in Cantaing British Cemetery, France.


PTE. ALEXANDER HENDRY.
Note: all records spell the family name as Henry.
Alexander Henry – age 26 – Private (11671) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards
Alexander joined his battalion in France in April 1915 but he was killed a month later at Festubert.
Born 1889 Greenlaw, Berwickshire. Son of William Henry, farm steward at Lurdenlaw, Sprouston, Roxburghshire and at Redden, and of Janet (Richardson) Henry. Husband of Isabella (Morton) Henry of Swinton Hill, Berwickshire who he married in 1907 in Sprouston.
Missing in Action on 18 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Sprouston Parish War Memorial.

PIPER ANDREW HENDRY.
Andrew Hendry – age 23 – Private (822) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB pipe band. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1892 at Greenlaw. Gordon, Berwickshire. Son of William and Mary (Scott) Hendry of Girrick Farm, Nenthorn, Berwickshire. (just over the county border from Kelso)
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Nenthorn Parish War Memorial.


PTE. WILLIAM HERKES.
William Herkes – age 31 – Private (6770) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 William, aged 16, was a ploughman at Newtonlees in Ednam, Roxburghshire and by 1911 the family had moved to Roxburgh. William landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1884 Coldstream, Berwickshire. Son of Robert and Eliza Morrison (Sheppard) Herkes of Ednam, of Roxburgh and of Sucklawridge, Makerstoun, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Ednam Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JOHN HEWITSON.
John Hewitson – age 39 – Private (200827) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a mole catcher in Kelso when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed as Private (7422) with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was badly wounded during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah and he was evacuated to hospital in Cairo, Egypt in July 1915. He then served in Palestine before the battalion moved to France in April 1918.
Born 1879 in Heiton, Roxburgh. Son of John and Annie (Lough) Hewitson of Southfield, Kelso,
Missing in Action on 2 October 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.
Also named on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial.

Andrew Hogarth – age 23 – Private (106) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a house painter and had been a member of the Kelso company of the Territorial 4th KOSB for some years. He was mobilised in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1890 in Kelso. Son of the late Robert Boswell Hogarth (died 1908) of Abbey Row, Kelso and of Jessie Euphemia (Ross) Hogarth. Husband of Mary Ross (Laidlaw) Hogarth of Linton, Roxburghshire who he married in 1913 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 12 July 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.


GUNNER ANDREW J. HOGARTH.
Andrew John Hogarth – age 31 – Gunner (209304) 20th Reserve Battery, Royal Field Artillery.
Andrew died in the Brook War Hospital at Woolwich, London.
Born 1885 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire. Son of the late Mary (Watson) Hogarth (died 1913) and of Andrew Hogarth of Smailholm, Roxburghshire. Husband of Mary (Fleming) Hogarth of Friars Cottages, Smailholm who he married in 1910 in Smailholm.
Died on Service on 4 April 1917 and buried in Smailholm Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Smailholm Parish War Memorial.
Andrew's son John Cairns Hogarth, Gunner (1578899) 132 (The Glamorgan Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery was reported as missing in action on 3 December 1942.


PTE. HENRY HOGARTH.
Henry Knox Hogarth – age 28 – Private (17280) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Henry landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1887 in Kelso as Henry Hogarth. Son of the late George Hogarth (died 1910) and of Helen (Knox) Hogarth (died 1913) of Kelso. He named his brother James and his sister Jane as his legatees.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church.


PTE. JOHN A. HOGARTH.
John Anderson Hogarth – age 26 – Private (41834) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
John was a ploughman at Manorhall, Kelso when he enlisted. He was posted as Private (8710) to the 2nd King's Own Scottish Borderers but was transferred to the HLI.
Born 1890 in St. Boswells, Roxburghshire. Son of Andrew and Isabella Dunn (Anderson) Hogarth of Makerstoun, Roxburghshire. John named Andrew as the guardian of his son. Husband of the late Georgina Isabel (Skeldon) Hogarth (died 1916) who he married in 1915 in Crailing, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Makerstoun Parish War Memorial.


2nd LIEUT. JOHN S. HOGARTH.
John Scott Hogarth – age 19 – Second Lieutenant, 4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was educated at Kelso High School and enlisted as a Private in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry. He was commissioned in the Territorial 4th KOSB in December 1915 and was posted to the 2nd KOSB in France in October 1916.
Born 1897 at Maxwellheugh, Kelso. Son of the late John Hogarth, Kelso Mills (died 1907) and of Mary (Wilson) Hogarth of Galalaw, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 25 March 1917 and buried in Ecoivres Military Cemetery, Mont-St. Eloi, France.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial and on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial.

George Hope – age 20 – Private (200672) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George, as Private (7104), landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was invalided home and had recently rejoined his battalion in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1897 in Chanelkirk, Berwickshire as George Wilson Hope. Son of David and Margaret (Wilson) Hope of Smailholm Mains near Kelso and of Newton, Jedburgh.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.


PTE. JAMES HOPE.
James Hope – age 30 – Private (17826) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in August 1915. Later he was posted to the 8th KOSB in France.
Born 1886 in Kelso. Son of William and Helen (Brunton) Hope of Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 26 July 1916 and buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial.


CORPL. WILLIAM HUME.
William Hume – age 26 – Private (267553) 1/6th (Morayshire) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
William was a gardener at Floors Castle France when he enlisted and he landed as Private (3821) with the 7th Seaforths at Boulogne in May 1915. He then served as Private (6758) with the 1/5th Battalion before transferring as Private (5191) to the 1/6th Battalion.
Born 1890 in Kelso. Son of the late Peter Hume, coal merchant, of Maxwellhaugh, Kelso (died 1898) and of Marion Porteous (Beattie) Hume (from 1900 Mrs James Cumming) of the Abbey Temperance Hotel, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Roclincourt Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial.


L/CORPL. ANDREW INGLIS.
Andrew William Inglis – age 21 – Lance Corporal (13074) 105th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Andrew had been employed on the Newton Don estate, Nenthorn, Berwickshire before becoming a gamekeeper on the Marchmont estate, Greenlaw. He enlisted as Private (S/15151) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in November 1915 and went to France in early 1916 but transferred to the MGC. Andrew was badly wounded in October 1917 and died a month later in the 4th General Hospital at Camiers.
Born 1896 in Nenthorn, Berwickshire. Son of the late James Inglis (died 1916) and of the late Mary (Grieve) Inglis (died 1913) of Middle Lodge, Newton Don, Nenthorn, Berwickshire. (just over the county border from Kelso)
He named his sister Agnes Tait (Inglis) Clapperton/Stewart of Forest Lodge, Kelso as his legatee.
Died of Wounds on 12 November 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial and on the Nenthorn Parish War Memorial..

Andrew Jack – age 39 – Private (201428) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.

Missing in Action on 18 August 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial.


PTE. BERTIE JACKSON.

PTE. PERCIVAL H. JACKSON.
Harold Jackson – age 23 – Private (448) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
By 1911 Harold and his family had moved to Kelso from Yorkshire and he worked as a cycle repairman. He was a van man with the Kelso Laundry Company and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB when he was mobilised in August 1914. Harold landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1892 in Wakefield Yorkshire as Harold Percival Jackson. Son of William Henry Jackson and Ann Elizabeth (Oslear) Jackson of Grove Hill Lodge, Kelso. Husband of Mary Helen (Dickson) Jackson of Mill Wynd and of 12 Cross Street, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Henry Elliot Johnston – age 19 – Private (23515) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Henry had been at the front for just three weeks when he was killed.
Born 1897 in Ladykirk, Berwickshire. Son of John and Margaret (Smith) Johnston of 3 Havannah Court, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 3 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

James Kennedy – age 18 – Private (745) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1897 in Dumfries as James Menzies Kennedy. Son of William and Christina (Moffat) of 32 Horse Market, Kelso.

Andrew Kerr – age 24 – Private (47504) 32nd Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
Born 1894 at Ormiston Farm in Eckford, Roxburghshire. Son of the late John Kerr (died 1911) of Ormiston Mill and of Elizabeth Smith (Cochrane) Kerr of Nottylees, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 18 September 1918 and buried in Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Eckford Parish War Memorial.


TROOPER ANDREW KERR.
Possibly:

Andrew Kerr – age 23 – Private (58 ) 1st Regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles.
Andrew enlisted at Brandon, Manitoba in December 1914 but was admitted to hospital with appendicitis on 9 January 1915 and died two weeks later.
Born 1891 in Kelso. Son of James Wilson Kerr and of Helen (Wright) Kerr.
In 1901 at 19 Horse Market, Kelso there was James Wilson Kerr, 35, Helen Kerr, 29, Andrew Kerr, 9, and Margaret L. Kerr, 8. None are on the 1911 census.
Died on Service on 25 January 1915 and buried in Brandon Cemetery, Manitoba, Canada.

PIPER JAMES KERR.
James Kerr – age 27 – Private (779) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed as a forester on the Mellerstain estate near Kelso and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB pipe band. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1888 in Swinton, Berwickshire as James Speirs. Son of Charlotte (Speirs) Kerr and step-son of William Kerr of Blinkbonny, Nenthorn, Berwickshire (near Kelso) and of Yetholm Mains, Roxburghshire (near Kelso) who married in 1890 in Swinton.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Nenthorn Parish War Memorial.


PTE. ARTHUR D. KERSS.
Arthur Dodds Kerss – age 31 – Private (447996) 44th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Arthur was a carpenter when he enlisted at Calgary, Alberta in November 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in March 1916. He joined his battalion in France August but due to illness it was December 1917 before he became fully effective. Arthur was killed by shell fire at Dury, Arras.
Born 1887 in Roxburgh. Son of James Kerss, estate manager at Sanlaws, Roxburgh and of Shidlaw, Cornhill-on-Tweed, Northumberland, and of Janet (Dodds) Kerss,
Missing in Action on 3 September 1918 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.
Also named on the Roxburgh Parish War Memorial.


GUNNER GEORGE R. KINGHORN.
George Rutherford Kinghorn – age 21 – Gunner (22807) “A” Battery, 331st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
George had been a butcher in Kelso. He landed in France in August 1915 and at some point joined the 331st RFA after they arrived in France in early 1917. George died in the 36th Casualty Clearing Station at Zuydcoote near Dunkirk.
Born 1896 at Mellerstain Mill in Earlston, Berwickshire. Son of the late John Kinghorn of Sheddon Park Road, Kelso (died 1901) and of Jane Ann (Earl) Kingholm of Roxburgh Street, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 17 September 1917 and buried in Zuydcoote Military Cemetery, Nord, France.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church.

2nd LIEUT. J. LESLIE LAIDLAW.
John Leslie Laidlaw – age 22 – Lieutenant, 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
John was educated at Kelso High School and at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh before becoming a student of medicine at Edinburgh University in 1912. He had just completed his second year of study when he was commissioned from the University's Officer Training Corps in October 1914. John joined his battalion in France in February 1916 but was fatally wounded at Longueval on the Somme and died three days later.
Born 1894 in Muthill, Perthshire. Son of the Rev. John Laidlaw and of Johanna Mary (Young) Laidlaw of Muthill and of Kelso United Free Church, later St. John's U.F, Church, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 20 July 1916 and buried in Corbie Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church, on the Kelso High School memorial, on the Merchiston Castle School memorial, on the Edinburgh Old College memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.


PTE. WILLIAM LEISHMAN.
William Leishman – age 25 – Private (351884) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was a grocer when he enlisted in Kelso.
Born 1892 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire. Son of the late Elizabeth (Smart) Leishman (died 1896) and of Robert Leishman of 51 Meigle Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 21 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
Also named on the Galashiels Roll of Honour.


SERGT. ALEXANDER W. LILLICO.
Alexander William Lillico – age 26 – Sergeant (254011) 1/7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Alexander had served his apprenticeship in Kelso and was a compositor/printer, living at McArthur Street in Dunoon, Argyllshire when he enlisted there in August 1914. He had previously spent 4 years in the Territorial 4th King's Own Scottish Borderers. He landed in France as Corporal (1774) with the 1/8th (Argyllshire) Battalion in May 1915 but became ill and was evacuated to hospital in Blackpool in September. He was posted to the 1/6th Battalion in France in May 1916 and promoted to Sergeant (7978) in September. He returned to the UK for officer training in January 1917 but was posted back to France in September where he joined the 1/7th Battalion. Alexander was killed two months later.
Born 1891 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of Mary Helen Lillico of 14 Cross Street and of 10 Woodmarket, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 21 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the Dunoon & Cowal War Memorial.

PTE. ALEXANDER LINDORES.
Alexander Lindores – age 21 – Private (201211) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander enlisted in November 1915 and as Private (8203) he joined his battalion in Egypt. He served in Palestine where he was killed at el Mughar.
Born 1896 in Hume, Berwickshire. Son of Adam and Christina (Scott) Lindores of Sandyknowe, Smailholm, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1917. and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Smailholm Parish War Memorial.


L/CORPL. WILLIAM LOCKIE.
William Lockie – age 29 – Private (S/10069) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
William played football with the Legerwood Village team in Berwickshire and as a reservist he rejoined his regiment in August 1914. He joined his battalion in France in September 1914 but he was killed six weeks later near Ypres in Belgium.
Born 1885 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of Andrew Robson Lockie and of Ellen Veitch Lockie of Cross Street, Kelso and of Blainslie, Selkirkshire. (near Legerwood)
Killed in Action on 5 November 1914 and buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Lauder Burgh and Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire.


PTE. ARTHUR D. LUKE.
Arthur Luke – age 36 – Private (27969) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Arthur enlisted as Private (33028) in the Royal Scots Fusiliers but was posted to the Scottish Rifles in France.
Born 1881 in Carham, Glendale, Northumberland as Arthur Alexander T. Luke. Son of the late Henry and Margaret (Richardson) Luke of Eckford. (both died in 1905) Husband of Margaret (Laidlaw) Luke of Home Farm, Makerstoun, Roxburghshire and of Ednam, Roxburghshire who he married in December 1906 in Eckford, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 26 March 1917 and buried in Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.
Also named on the Makerstoun Parish War Memorial as PTE. A. LUKE, S.R. 26th MARCH 1917.

PTE. GEORGE LUKE.
George Luke – age 20 – Private (13053) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
George landed with his battalion in France in May 1915. He was wounded and taken prisoner during the battle of Loos but he died in a German Field Hospital at Seclin. He was buried in the Communal Cemetery there but was re-interred in Souchez in 1922.
Born 1895 in Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of James and Agnes Downie (Stewart) Luke.
Died of Wounds on 3 October 1915 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.
Also named on the Morebattle Parish War Memorial.


PTE. DAVID LUNAM.
David Lunam – age 26 – Private (200950) Depot, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was a road surfaceman when he enlisted in January 1915 as Private (7685) in the 1/4th KOSB He was discharged due to illness in July 1918 and awarded a Silver War Badge (B28113) David died of kidney disease in the Kelso Cottage Hospital.
Born 1892 in Hownam, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Jane (Telfer) Lunam (died 1900) and of William Lunam of Hoselaw Mains, Linton, Roxburghshire and of Burnbrae, Nenthorn, Berwickshire.
Died on 20 December 1919 and buried in Nenthorn Cemetery, Berwickshire. (CWG)
Also named on the Linton Parish War Memorial.


PIPER THOMAS LUNHAM.
Thomas Lunham – age 24 – Private (778) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was a member of Nenthorn Rifle Club and of the Territorial 4th KOSB pipe band. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but he was wounded a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah. Thomas was evacuated to hospital in Cairo where he died.
Born December 1890 at Newton Don, Nenthorn, Berwickshire. Son of George and Janet (Scoon) Lunham of West Lodge, Nenthorn and of Harrietfield Farm, Nenthorn. (near Kelso).
Died of Wounds on 24 July 1915 and buried in Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church and on the Nenthorn Parish War Memorial.

L/CORPL. PATRICK LYNCH.
Patrick Lynch – age 23 – Lance Corporal (40866) 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Patrick and his brother Stephen enlisted as Privates 11234 and 11233 in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in January 1912. Patrick was serving with the 2nd KOSB in Ireland when war broke out and he landed with his battalion at Le Havre in August 1914. He was wounded in May 1915 and then served with the 6th KOSB before transferring to the Scottish Rifles in November 1916.
Born 1895 in Kelso as Patrick Reid. Son of Stephen Lynch and of Margaret Reid of Mill Wynd Kelso. Husband of Gladys M. Lynch.
Missing in Action on 21 April 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Church of the Immaculate Conception (St Mary's) memorial in Kelso.
Stephen was serving with the 1st KOSB at Lucknow in India. The battalion returned to England via Egypt in December 1914 and sailed again in March 1915, landing at Gallipoli in April. He was wounded there and later served as Private (76475) in the Highland Light Infantry. He left the army due to his wounds in February 1919 and was awarded a Silver War Badge (B197243)


PTE. ALEXANDER MABON (KELSO)

Alexander Mabon – age 39 – Private (41659) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
In 1915 Alexander was a farm servant at Ladyrig, Roxburgh. He was wounded on 3 October 1918 and evacuated to the Special Military Surgical Hospital, Northfield, Birmingham where he died four months later.
Born 1879 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of the late Thomas Mabon (died 1892) and of Margaret (Clark) Mabon of Temple Hall Coldingham, Berwickshire.
Died of Wounds on 24 February 1919 and buried in Coldingham Priory Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Roxburgh Parish War Memorial and on the Coldingham Parish War Memorial.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church.
