KELSO TOWN and DISTRICT WW1 WAR MEMORIAL.


L/CORPL. ALEXANDER COWANS
.
Alexander Cranston Cowans – age 28 – Lance Corporal (200845) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander worked on the farm at Swinside Townfoot, Oxnam, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed as Private (7469) with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but was wounded two weeks later and evacuated to hospital in Alexandria, Egypt. Later he served in Egypt and Palestine where he was killed at El Mughar.
Born 1889 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Alice (Cranston) Cowans (died 1907) and of Andrew Cowans of Yetholm Mains, Kelso, and of Longframlington, Morpeth, Northumberland.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial and on the Oxnam Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JAMES CRAIG.
James Anderson Craig – age 23 – Private (201455) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James joined his battalion as Private (8527) in Egypt and served in Palestine.
Born 1893 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of Adam and Catherine (Sked) Craig of Harlaw, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 31 May 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.


PTE. GEORGE CRERAR
.
George Gow Crerar – age 25 – Private (16594) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George of Bowmont Forest, Eckford, Roxburghshire enlisted in Kelso in November 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1889 in Melmerby, Penrith, Cumberland. Son of Alexander and Mary (Campbell) Crerar of Melmerby.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Eckford Parish War Memorial, on the Eckford Parish Church Roll of Honour now in Eckford Community Hall, and on the Melmerby War Memorial.

CADET ROBERT CROALL.
Robert George Croall – age 41 – Private (M/401845) Cadet Company, Army Service Corps.
Robert was educated at Kelso High School before becoming a managing partner of Croall & Croall, coach builders. He was a Town Councillor and a Captain in the Special Constabulary when he enlisted in November 1915. He had been selected for a commission and had been at the Officer Cadet Unit at Woolwich for 6 weeks when he contracted influenza. Robert died of pneumonia in the Royal Herbert Hospital, Kidbrook, Woolwich, London.
Born 1877 in Kelso. Son of the late Helen Skinner (Mackie) Croall (died 1901) and of the late John Croall (died 1916) of Maxwell Place, Kelso. Husband of Margaret Turnbull (Laidlaw) Croall of St. Leonards, Kelso who he married in 1914 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
Died on Service on 22 July 1918 and buried in Kelso Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial, on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial and on The Border Club memorial in Hawick.


2nd LIEUT. JOHN G. G. CUTHBERT.
John George Gunn Cuthbert – age 26 – Lieutenant, 28th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
John was educated at Hownam school, Roxburghshire and at Woodside Higher Grade School in Glasgow before studying the Arts (M.A. 1913) and then Divinity at Edinburgh University. He was a Cadet Corporal in the Officer Training Corps until March 1915 when he was commissioned in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He went to France in October 1915 and was attached to the MGC. John was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 October but died just under three weeks later.
Born 1890 in Hownam. Son of the late James Cuthbert former schoolmaster at Hownam (died April 1916) and of Christina (Gunn) Cuthbert of Hownam, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 19 October 1916 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Hownam Parish War Memorial, on the Woodside School memorial, on the Old College memorial in Edinburgh University, on the University's Roll of the Fallen and on the Students of Divinity section of the Church of Scotland memorial in St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh.

PTE. SIMON DALGLEISH.
Simon Dalgleish – age 30 – Lance Corporal (200149) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Simon was living in Kelso when he enlisted and as Private (795) he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and Palestine where he was killed at el Mughar.
Born 1887 in Ednam, Roxburghshire. Son of James and Jane (Goodfellow) Dalgleish of Rumbletonlaw, Greenlaw and of Huntly Wood, Earlston, Berwickshire.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Gordon Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire.


PTE. JOHN DARRIE.
John Darrie – age 20 – Private (7285) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in Hume, Berwickshire. Son of Anthony and Jane (Bain) Darrie of Hoselaw Mains, Linton, Roxburghshire and of The Broom, Ancrum, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoili, Turkey.
Also named on the Linton Parish War Memorial.


PTE. GEORGE DAVIDSON.
George Davidson – age 30 – Private (760) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1885 in Stichell, Roxburghshire. Son of James and Janet (Campbell) Davidson of Mayfield, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoili, Turkey.


PTE. JAMES DICKSON.
James Dickson – age 22 – Private (200150) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (796) and served in Palestine where he died in the 54th Casualty Clearing Station at Deir el Belah.
Born 1893 in Nenthorn, Berwickshire as James Alexander Dickson. Son of Robert and Margaret (Watters) Dickson of 100 Roxburgh Street, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 6 April 1917 and buried in Deir el Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.

PTE. THOMAS DICKSON .
Thomas Dickson – age 21 – Private (41028) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Thomas enlisted as Private (4865) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and was posted as Private (302303) to the 1/8th Battalion in France before transferring to the 5th Camerons. He was reported to be a prisoner of war in July 1918 but he died in the Field Hospital at Bucy-les-Cerny and he was buried in the German Cemetery at Morieulois near St. Quentin. Thomas was re-interred at Vendresse in February 1925.
Born 1897 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Son of John and Margaret (Wood) Dickson of Kerchesters, Sprouston, Roxburghshire.
Died of Wounds on 13 July 1918 and buried in Vendresse British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Sprouston Parish War Memorial.


TROOPER GEORGE DODDS.
George Dodds – age 22 – Private (2056) 2/1st Lothians and Border Horse.
George was educated at Kelso High School and was a bank clerk with the Bank of Scotland when he enlisted. He was serving at the Amisfield Camp in Haddington, East Lothian when he contracted measles and suffered cardiac failure.
Born 1893 in Mertoun, Berwickshire. Son of James Dodds, former schoolmaster at Mertoun, and of Annie (Rodgers) Dodds.
Died on Service on 8 January 1916 and buried in Yetholm Parish Churchyard, Roxburghshire. (CWG)
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial, on the Mertoun Parish War Memorial, on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial and on the Bank of Scotland memorial in Edinburgh.


L/CORPL. THOMAS DONALDSON.
Thomas Donaldson – age 25 – Lance Corporal (2060/A) 18th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
Thomas emigrated to Australia in 1912 and was a labourer when he enlisted in Liverpool, New South Wales in July 1915. He joined the 18th Battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915 and after the withdrawal they moved to France in March 1916. He was wounded in August 1916 and treated at the 4th General Hospital in Camiers before he rejoined his battalion in October. He was evacuated to hospital again in November, due to illness, and it was April 1917 before he rejoined his battalion. Thomas was wounded two weeks later and after two days he died in the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Grevillers.
Born 1892 in Greenlaw, Berwickshire. Son of Mary Ann (Donaldson) Blake and step-son of Walter Blake of Caldronbrae, Stichill, Roxburghshire who had married in 1904 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 5 May 1917 and buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Stichill Parish War Memorial.

SERGT. ANDREW DOUGLAS.
Andrew Douglas – age 24 – Private (15587) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Andrew enlisted in April 1916. He was buried in Blairville Orchard Cemetery but was re-interred at Souchez in 1923.
Born 1894 in Kirk Yetholm, Roxburghshire. Son of Agnes Douglas.
Killed in Action on 2 April 1918 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.
Also named on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial and on the Morebattle Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JOHN R. DOUGLAS.
John Riddell Douglas – age – Private (21410) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was a shoe-maker at 3 St. Ann's Place, Haddington, East Lothian when he enlisted in March 1915. He joined the 17th Royal Scots in France in March 1916. He was wounded in October 1917 and, after treatment in hospital in Rouen, he was evacuated to the Alexandra Military Hospital at Cosham, Portsmouth. John was posted to the 2nd Royal Scots in France on 10 May 1918 but suffered a gas attack was died in the 4th Canadian Casualty Clearing Station at Pernes.
Born 1888 in Kelso. Son of the late Mary (Henderson) Douglas (died 1892) and of the late James Douglas of Horse Market, Kelso.
He initially named his sister Mrs Morrison of 19 Horse Market, Kelso as his next-of-kin.
Husband of Elsie (Fulthorpe) Douglas of 14 Amblers Yard, Holbeck, Leeds, Yorkshire who he married in April 1918 in Holbeck.
Died of Wounds on 22 May 1918 and buried in Pernes British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church.


L/CORPL. THOMAS DOUGLAS.
Thomas Douglas – age 38 – Lance Corporal (20/537) 20th (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
In 1911 Thomas was a driver with Gateshead Corporation and he enlisted at Bedlington, Northumberland. He had been a woodman at Wooden, Kelso when he married in 1902 and in 1911 his wife and family were at Linton, Roxburghshire.
Born 1878 in Eckford, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Helen Robson (Lunn) Douglas (died 1909 in Kelso) and of Alexander Hogg Douglas. Husband of Agnes Mary Ann (Romanes) Douglas who he married in 1902 in Eckford.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church.

Walter Douglas – age 35 – Private (SE/4642) 17th Veterinary Hospital, Royal Army Veterinary Corps.
Walter died in the 50th General Hospital in Salonica in northern Greece.
Born 1884 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Andrew Douglas and of Mary (Blyth) Douglas of Kirk Yetholm. Husband of the late Agnes (Norris) Douglas (died 1909) who he married in 1906 in Yetholm.
Died on Service on 25 January 1919 and buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece.
Also named on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial.

William Douglas – age 37 – Private (15682) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
William died in 4th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1880 in Bellingham, Northumberland. Son of the late Andrew Douglas and of Mary (Blyth) Douglas of Kirk Yetholm. Husband of Rebecca Jane (Butler) Douglas who he married in 1904 in South Shields, County Durham.
In 1911 William, aged 31, was a lead worker, living with his wife and family in Jarrow-on-Tyne, South Shields but by 1914 they had moved to Kirk Yetholm and Rebecca was there in 1920.She died in 1958 in Melrose, Roxburghshire.
Died of Wounds on 23 July 1917 and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial.


PTE. ALEXANDER DRUMMOND.
Alexander Drummond – age 33 – Private (446) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander was working at Springwood Park in Kelso and had been a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB for five years when he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1882 in Hobkirk, Roxburghshire. Son of Alexander and Agnes (Fergusson) Drummond of Rewcastle, Jedburgh and of Tythehouse, Bonchester Bridge, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Adam was a ploughman at Yetholm Mains when he enlisted.
Born 1891 in Foulden, Berwickshire. Son of William and Elizabeth (Wood) Dumma of Yetholm Mains, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 29 July 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

John was a farm servant when he enlisted in October 1914. The 8th Gordons had moved to Aldershot prior to going to France and John died in the Cambridge Military Hospital in Aldershot, Farnham, Hampshire.
Born 1895 in Makerstoun, Roxburghshire. Son of William and Elizabeth (Wood) Dumma of Yetholm Mains, Roxburghshire.
Died on Service on 11 June 1915 and buried in Yetholm Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial.


PTE. ANDREW DUNN.
Andrew Dunn – age 39 – Private (3232971) 31st Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Andrew was educated at Kelso High School and in 1901 he and his brother William were clerks in a flour mill in Edinburgh and were living in Gayfield Square. Andrew was a book-keeper, living in Colorado Springs, USA when he enlisted in Toronto, Ontario in March 1918. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in April and was posted to his battalion in France in August but was killed just over two months later. He named his mother and Miss Emma Jane Robinson of High Forge, Swalwell, Durham as his next-of-kin and as beneficiaries in his will.
Born 1879 in Kelso, Son of the late William Dunn, grain merchant, (died 1909) and of Jane Archibald (Turnbull) Dunn of The Elms, Roxburgh Street, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 11 October 1918 and buried in Niagara Cemetery, Iwuy, France.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.

PTE. RICHARD ECKFORD.
Richard Henrie Eckford – age 21 – Private (6835) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Richard was a chauffeur with Sir R.J. Waldie-Griffith of Hendersyde Park, Ednam, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Cornhill, Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland as Richard Lane Henrie. Son of Ellinor (Henrie) Eckford and step-son of James Eckford of 14 Hotspur Avenue, Whitley Bay, Northumberland who had married in 1896 in Coldstream, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Ednam Parish War Memorial and on the Whitley Bay War Memorial.


LIEUT. WILLIAM G. EWART.
William Grieve Ewart – age 34 – Lieutenant, Fife and Forfar Yeomanry attached to the 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was educated at the Edinburgh Institution (later Stewart's Melville College) before he became a stockbroker's clerk, living with his family at Royal Circus in Edinburgh.
At the outbreak of war he was at the Estancia "Los Aromas", San Genaro, S.Fι in Argentina and he sailed from La Plata, Buenos Aires in November 1915. He was commissioned in the Fife & Forfar Yeomanry in December 1915. He was seconded to the Lewis Gun School as an instructor in July 1917 and was promoted to Lieutenant in October.
Born 1882 in Edinburgh. Son of James and Eliza Agnes (Grieve) Ewart of Cairnmount, Roxburgh and of Littledene, Kirkbank, Burntisland, Fife.
Missing in Action on 30 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Roxburgh Parish War Memorial.

Alexander Fair – age 19 – Private (623) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Kelso. Son of Peter and Isabella (Richardson) Fair of Victoria Cottages, Sprouston, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

PTE. JOHN FAIRBAIRN.
John Fairbairn – age 43 – Private (25510) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a grocer in Kelso when he enlisted. He died in the 39th Stationary Hospital in Lille, France.
Born 1875 in Kirkton, Roxburghshire. Son of William and Margaret (Leithead) Fairbairn of Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland who had married in 1874 in Kirkton. Husband of Helen (Thomson) Fairbairn of 12 Forrest Field, Kelso who he married in 1903 in Kelso.
Died on Service on 5 December 1918 and buried in Lille Southern Cemetery, France.


PTE. THOMAS FAIRBAIRN.
Thomas Blackie Fairbairn – age 19 – Private (S/5340) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Thomas joined his battalion in France in March 1915 but died two months later. He was reported to be the first man from Roxburgh Parish to fall.
Born 1896 Bonnyrigg, Cockpen, Midlothian. Son of Robert and Margaret (Blackie) Fairbairn of New Cottages, Roxburgh.
Died of Wounds on 9 May 1915 and buried in St. Vaast Post Military Cemetery, Richebourg-L'Avoue, France.
Also named on the Roxburgh Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JAMES FAIRGRIEVE.
James Henry Fairgrieve – age 32 – Private (843) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.

PTE. HUGH FERGUSON.
Hugh Ferguson – age 21 – Private (200642) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Hugh was a ploughman at Graden Farm, Linton when he enlisted. As Private (7048) he joined his battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine where he was wounded at Gaza. He died a week later in Hospital at Kantara.
Born 1896 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire. Son of Michael and Jane (Burke) Ferguson of Graden Farm. Linton, Roxburghshire.
Died of Wounds on 26 April 1917 and buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Linton Parish War Memorial and on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial.


CORPL. ALEXANDER FORBES.
Alexander Forbes – age 26 – Private (10356) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
“Sandy” was serving with the 1st KOSB in India and in August 1914 was in Lucknow. The battalion returned to England via Egypt in December 1914 and then sailed from Avonmouth, landing at Cape Helles on Gallipoli on 25 April 1915.
Born 1889 in Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland. Son of former Sergeant (2191) Alexander Forbes of the KOSB and of Elizabeth (Martin) Forbes of Sheddon Park Lodge, Kelso. He was the Pipe-Major of Kelso Fife and Drum Band.

MAJ. (ACT. LT. COL.) WALTER FORREST. M.C.
Walter Torrie Forrest, Military Cross – age 37 – Major, 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter was educated at Kelso High School and was a partner with his father in the family business as gunsmiths and fishing tackle manufacturers in Kelso. He played for Hawick Rugby Club as a centre and made his international debut for Scotland in 1903. After eight caps, a collarbone injury ended his international career in 1905, but he continued to play for his team in Kelso. He was commissioned in the 1st Roxburgh and Selkirk Volunteer Ride Corps in 1906 and transferred to the Territorial 4th KOSB in 1908. He was mobilised in August 1914 and as a Captain he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was awarded a M.C. “For conspicuous gallantry in action. He carried out a daring reconnaissance, and obtained most valuable information. He has on many previous occasions done very fine work”, and where for a time he commanded the battalion. Walter was killed at Gaza.
Born 1880 in Kelso. Son of the late Margaret (Torrie) Forrest (died 1903) and of George Forrest of 35 The Square, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial, on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial and on the Scottish Rugby Union memorial at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

L/CORPL. ANDREW FORTUNE.
Andrew Fortune – age 21 – Lance Corporal (40060) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a ploughman at Fairnington Farm, Roxburgh when he enlisted in the 4th KOSB Reserve in November 1914.
Born 1896 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire. Son of James and Margaret Archibald (Ferguson) Fortune of Fairnington, Roxburgh.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Roxburgh Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JOHN H. FOX.
John Henry Fox – age 19 – Private (S/23001) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was employed by Messrs Angton & Porter at Commercial House in Kelso when he enlisted. He died in the 21st Casualty Clearing Station at Ytres.
Born 1898 in St. Andrew, Edinburgh. Son of Henry and Janet (Laidlaw) Fox of Morebattle.
Died of Wounds on 21 August 1917 and buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, France.
Also named on the Morebattle Parish War Memorial.

PTE. JAMES FOX.
James Fox – age 31 – Private (16970) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers
James enlisted in December 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915.
Born 1884 in Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 30 March 1916 and buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France.


PTE. THOMAS L. FOX.
Thomas Lindsay Fox – age 39 – Private (3/9135) 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
Thomas was a gardener when he enlisted in the King's Own Scottish Borderers as Private (5517) in November 1895. He served with the 2nd KOSB in India from February 1898 to January 1904 and then served in the UK until he was discharged having served his full term in November 1907. He enlisted as Private (5294) in the 3rd KOSB Reserve in August 1908 and worked in the gardens at Edenside and Springwood Park in Kelso. He joined his battalion in France in January 1915 but was killed less than two months later at Ypres.
Born 1876 in Kelso.
Missing in Action on 4 March 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


SERGT. WILLIAM FOX.
William Fox – age 35 – Private (579) 30th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
William had completed 12 years of service in the Royal Marines and was living at 213 Rose Street, Darlington, New South Wales when he enlisted in Liverpool, NSW in July 1915. He sailed from Sydney, NSW in November 1915, landing in Egypt where he was promoted to Corporal in April 1916, before moving to France in June where he was promoted to Sergeant. However in January 1917 he was reduced to the ranks due to disciplinary offences.
Born 1882 in Kelso.
His sister, Mrs Margaret Mclean of 213 Rose Street, Darlington, NSW was named as his next-of-kin after his mother's death in 1916.
Missing in Action on 19 September 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

PTE. JAMES FRATER.
James Frater – age 22 – Private (30667) 16th Battalion (2nd Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
James was a farm servant in Ednam, Roxburghshire when he married in 1915.
Born 1894 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire. Son of the late John Frater and of Elizabeth (Douglas) Frater of Yetholm. Husband of Mary (Scott) Frater who he married in 1915 in Morebattle.
Missing in Action on 3 July 1917 and named on the Nieuport Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial and on the Morebattle Parish War Memorial.


SERGT. THOMAS GALBRAITH.
Thomas Galbraith, Military Medal – age 29 – Company Sergeant Major (59348) 21st Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Thomas was employed as a groom when he enlisted at Kingston. Ontario in March 1915. He sailed with his battalion from Montreal in May 1915 and they landed in France in September. Thomas was promoted to Corporal in April 1916 and to Sergeant in September. He was wounded January 1917 and treated in the 11th General Hospital in Camiers. He then spent some time at the Canadian Base where he suffered a badly broken leg in an accident and he was admitted to the 8th Stationary Hospital in Wimereux before being evacuated to the Military Hospital in Dundee in May 1917. He had been awarded a M.M. for bravery in the field. Thomas was able to rejoin his battalion in July 1918 but he was killed a month later.
Born 1889 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Jane (Liddell) Galbraith (died 1912) and of Thomas Galbraith of Graden Farm, Yetholm, Roxburghshire and of Holefield Farm, Sprouston.
Killed in Action on 27 August 1918 and buried in Tigris Lane Cemetery, Wancourt, France.
Also named on the Sprouston Parish War Memorial.

PTE. WILLIAM A. GALBRAITH

William Alexander Galbraith – age 24 – Private (201307) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (8331) and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1893 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Jane (Liddell) of Graden, Linton, Roxburghshire (died 1912) and of Thomas Galbraith.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.

The memorial also has
PTE. WILLIAM R. GALBRAITH.
The Linton Parish Church Memorial plaque and the Hoselaw Chapel Roll of Remembrance in Linton record a Wm. ROBERT GALBRAITH, K.O.S.B. GAZA, 1917.
This would seem to be the same man as the William Alexander Galbraith detailed above.

PTE. WILLIAM A. GALLOWAY.
William Alexander Galloway – age 38 – Private (911046) 46th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
William had served his apprenticeship as a law clerk with a solicitor in Kelso and had spent five years with the Border Rifle Volunteers and Yeomanry before he emigrated to Canada. He was farming near Rosetown, Saskatchewan when he enlisted at Saskatoon in June 1916. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in October and joined his battalion in France in early February 1917 but was fatally wounded in April and died five days later in the 22nd Casualty Clearing Station at Bruay.
Born 1878 at Pleasants Schoolhouse, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Son of Frederick Turner Galloway and Jessie (Mellis) Galloway of the Schoolhouse, Makerstoun, Roxburghshire.
Died of Wounds on 29 April 1917 and buried in Bruay Communal Cemetery Extension, France..
Also named on the Makerstoun Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JAMES GARDINER.
James Gardiner – age 35 – Private (39099) 15th Battalion (1st Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
James was a grocer employed by Robert Rae, merchant, in Kelso when he enlisted.
Born 1881 in Kelso. Son of John and Jane (Lillie) Gardiner of The Square, Kelso. Husband of Helen (Macgregor) Gardiner of Albert Place, Kelso and of 284 Holburn Street, Aberdeen who he married in 1907 in Kelso.
Killed in Action on 15 July 1917 and buried in Ramscappelle Road Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church.


L/CORPL. JOHN D. GIBSON.
John Deans Gibson – age 38 – Private (S/40440) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
In 1901 John was working as a fishing rod maker in Inverness. He joined the 1/6th (Perthshire) Battalion as Private (1902) in 1916 and was transferred to the 8th Battalion.
Born 1876 in Kelso. Son of John and Mary (Deans) Gibson of Teviot Cottage, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 19 October 1916 and buried in Warlencourt British Cemetery, France.

William Hartley Gillis – age 20 – Lance Sergeant (276851) 14th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
William was educated at Hawick Higher Grade School where he was dux in 1913.
Born 1897 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of David Gillis, formerly headmaster at St. Cuthbert's School in Hawick and at Lampitlaw, Sprouston, Roxburghshire, and of Harriet (Hartley) Gillis.
Missing in Action on 27 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Sprouston Parish War Memorial and on the St. Andrews Church memorial in Kelso.


PTE. JAMES GILROY.
Thought to be:
James Gilroy – age 25 – Private (4882) 12th/13th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
James enlisted in Newcastle and joined the 8th Northumberland Fusiliers in France before transferring to the combined 12th/13th Battalion.
Born 1893 in Maxton, Roxburghshire. Son of Janet Gilroy and step-son of Peter Weatherburn who married Janet in 1901 in Maxton.
Killed in Action on 8 September 1918 and buried in Epehy Wood Farm Cemetery, Epehy, Somme, France.


PTE. JOHN GLEED.
John Gleed – age 30 – Private (5687) 13th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
John emigrated to Australia in November 1913 and was a coach builder living at Coogee, Sydney, New South Wales when he enlisted in January 1916. He sailed from Sydney in May and joined his battalion in Belgium in October 1916. He was killed at Guedecourt, near Bapaume but his burial place was lost.
Born 1887 at Hendersyde Park, Ednam, Roxburghshire as John Charles Gleed. Son of the late Jemima (Logie) Gleed (died 1906 in Ednam) and of Mark Gleed of Hendersyde Park and of Dean Park Street, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 4 February 1917 and named on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Somme, France.
Also named on the Ednam Parish War Memorial.
