Great research by Ken and Tony. I suspect that this memorial may now be in the Dumfries Aviation Museum but I have yet to confirm this.

A.C. J.R. ROSS.
John Ronald Ross – age 21 – Aircraftman 2nd Class (973925) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
John's death was registered at Oxford.
Born 1919 at Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Son of John and Ellen (Ferguson) Ross of Castle Douglas.
Died on Active Service on 5 February 1940 and buried in Castle Douglas Cemetery.
Named on the Castle Douglas War Memorial and on the St. Andrews Church WW2 Memorial now in Castle Douglas Parish Church.


SGT R.E. SCOTT.
Robert Eccles Scott – age 21 – Sergeant (1126204) 429 (R.C.A.F.) Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Robert was educated at Sanquhar Public School in Dumfriesshire. 429 (Bison) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force was formed at RAF East Moor in Yorkshire in November 1942. Robert's Wellington bomber had taken off from East Moor for a raid on Bochum, near Dortmund in Germany, but was lost over the North Sea. Only the body of the pilot, David Lachlan Bain (RCAF) from Vancouver, was recovered and he is buried in Esbjerg, Denmark.
Born 1922 in Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire.
Son of James and Jane (Eccles) Scott of Kirkconnel, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 30 March 1943 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Named on the Kirkconnel War Memorial, on the Kirkconnel Parish Church WW2 memorial and on the Sanquhar School memorial.


P/O J.L. SHIELLS, D.F.M.
James Lauder Shiells, Distinguished Flying Medal – age 31 – Pilot Officer/Pilot (143451) 15 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
James was commissioned from Flight Sergeant (1052462) in March 1943 and was awarded a DFM as “1052462 James Lauder Shiells (later Pilot Officer), R.A.F.V.R., 15 Sqn., with effect from 15th April, 1943 (since deceased)”. His Stirling bomber had taken off from RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk for a raid on Mannheim but the aircraft was attacked by a night fighter and crashed at St-Erme-Soutre-et-Ramecourt, north of Reims.
Born 1911 in Annan, Dumfriesshire.
Son of James Alexander Shiells and Agnes Robson Butler (Lauder) Shiells of The Barony Lodge, Parkgate, Kirkmichael, Dumfriesshire and of The Bungalow, Bemersyde, St. Boswells, Melrose, Roxburghshire. Husband of “Reta” Margaret Elizabeth (Bradshaw) Shiells (Third Officer W.R.N.S.) of 9 Lauderdale Street, Edinburgh who he married in 1942 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 16 April 1943 and buried in St. Erme Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Named on the Kirkmichael War Memorial.

F/SGT W.D. SMAIL.
William Derek Smail – age 20 – Flight Sergeant (578230) 354 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Derek passed an open examination for entry as an aircraft apprentice in the RAF. He joined 354 Squadron which was a general reconnaissance squadron, first formed at Karachi in May 1943 as part of Coastal Command. The squadron, flying Liberator bombers, redeployed to Ceylon in October 1944. Derek's aircraft took off from Kankesanturai in the north of the island for a search operation but failed to return. Wreckage seen by other aircraft from the squadron but no signs of life.
Born 1924 in Moffat as William Derek Smail.
Grandson of John and Jane Thorburn Smail and nephew of Isabella Munro Smail of Moffat.
Missing in Action on 4 December 1944 and named on the Singapore Memorial, Singapore.
Named on the Moffat War Memorial and on the Moffat Academy memorial as Derek Smail.


SGT J. SOMERVILLE.
James Somerville – age 26 – Sergeant (529867) 58 Squadron, Royal Air Force, Coastal Command.
James worked as a potato merchant before his joined the RAF in 1935.
From April 1942 until the autumn of 1944 No. 58 Squadron was transferred to Coastal Command, based at RAF St Eval, Cornwall. It operated as an anti-submarine squadron over the Western Approaches and took a considerable toll of enemy surface vessels, sank five U-boats and shared in the destruction of two others. James's Halifax bomber was shot down while attacking U-666.
Born 1916 in Dumfries.
Son of Charles and Mary Jane (Gordon) Somerville of Craigrossie, Terregles, Kirkcudbrightshire. Husband of Margaret Agnes Stevenson (Mitchell) Somerville of Maida Hill, London who he married in 1940 in Willesden, Middlesex.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1943 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Named on the Terregles War Memorial.
The body of one crewman, Sergeant/Air Gunner Harold Stuart Butler, Royal Canadian Air Force, was recovered from the sea and is buried in Bilboa British Cemetery in Spain.



SGT J.H. STRETTON.
James Hornby Stretton – age 23 – Sergeant (Flight Engineer) (949546) 101 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
James had been an apprentice joiner in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire. He enlisted in 1940 and was killed when his Lancaster bomber, based at RAF Holme on Spalding Moor, was diverted due to fog but crashed on landing at RAF Scorton near Richmond, Yorkshire after a raid on Dortmund.
Born 1920 in Dalbeattie.
Son of James and Harriet Hardie (McAllan) Stretton of 164 Southwick Road, Dalbeattie. Husband of Clara (Pimlott) Stretton of Radcliffe who he married in 1942 in Radcliffe, Heywood, Lancashire.
Died on Active Service on 5 May 1943 and buried in Dalbeattie Cemetery. (CWG)
Named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial, on the Park Church Memorial now in Dalbeattie Parish Church and on the Royal British Legion Roll of Honour now in Dalbeattie Parish Church.

SGT W.A. TAIT.
William Anderson Tait – age 31 – Sergeant/Pilot (1383923) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
“Billy” was flying a Bristol Blenheim of the 70 Operational Training Unit at Nakuru in Kenya when a wing flap failed as he was on approach to landing. The aircraft rolled and hit the ground.
Born 1911 in Lockerbie, Dryfesdale.
Son of the late William Vivers Tait and of Jane Carruthers (Anderson) Tait of 23 Harcourt Place, Lockerbie and of Worsley, Lancashire.
Died on Active Service on 8 May 1943 and buried in Nakuru North Cemetery, Kenya.
Named on the Lockerbie War Memorial and on the St. Cuthbert's Church memorial in Lockerbie.


SGT H. TAYLOR.
Harry Taylor – age 25 – Sergeant/Pilot (1260918) 115 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Harry was educated at Annan Academy before serving his apprenticeship in the Royal Bank of Scotland in Annan. He was on the staff of the office in London when he enlisted in 1940. Harry was piloting a Wellington bomber which had taken off from RAF Marham in Norfolk for a raid on Essen but the aircraft was attacked by a night fighter and was shot down near Goch on the Dutch/German border. The crew were buried in Uedem Civil Cemetery but were re-interred in November 1946.
Born 1916 in Annan, Dumfriesshire.
Son of Harry and Jean Whyte (Gibson) Taylor of Blythswood, Annan.
Killed in Action on 27 March 1942 and buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.
Named on the Annan War Memorial, on the Erskine Church memorial in Annan and in the RBS Book of Remembrance.


SGT A. TELFER.
Adam Telfer – age 22 – Sergeant/Flight Engineer (1371009) 49 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Adam's Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Fiskerton in Lincolnshire for a raid on Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland) but was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crash landed near Stadil on the Danish west coast. Four of the crew were killed.
Born 1920 in Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire.
Son of Alexander and Janet (Findlater) Telfer of Durisdeer.
Killed in Action on 21 April 1943 and buried in Lemvig Cemetery, Denmark.
Named on the Durisdeer War Memorial and on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.


W/O R. THOMSON.
Robert Thomson – age 25 – Warrant Officer (1551277) 213 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Roy was educated at Dumfries Academy and worked with his father at their farm of West Mains near Collin, Mouswald. He joined the RAF in December 1940 and qualified as a pilot. In May 1944, 213 Squadron converted from Spitfires to P-51 Mustangs and moved to Biferno, Termoli, Italy in July for operations with the Balkan Air Force. Sweeps were made over Yugoslavia and Albania and Roy was last seen making an attack on a train.
Born 1920 in Dumfries.
Son of Robert and Alison Thomson, of West Mains, Collin, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 14 February 1945 and named on the Malta Memorial, Malta.
Named on the Mouswald War Memorial.

A.C. J. TOWNSLEY.
John Townsley – age 18 – Aircraftman 1st Class/Wireless Operator (552526) 18 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
Following the outbreak of war 18 Squadron, flying Bristol Blenheim bombers, went to France as part of the RAF Air Component of the British Expeditionary Force, and in the course of reconnaissance and bombing missions during the early stages of the blitzkrieg in May 1940, suffered heavy losses. John's aircraft, operating from an airfield at Rosiθres/Mιharicourt north of Paris, was shot down close to the River Mass at Reuver and the crew were buried in Venlo Cemetery but were re-interred in Jonkerbos in December 1947.
Born 1921 in Dumfries.
Son of the late Margaret Helen (Hanlon) Townsley and of Arthur Eben Townsley, step-son of Mary Menzies(Gillespie) Townsley of Kelton, Caerlaverock.
Killed in Action on 10 May 1940 and buried in Jomkerbos War Cemetery, Nijmegen, Netherlands.
Named on the Caerlaverock War Memorial and on the Caerlaverock Parish Church memorial


F/SGT J.M. WATSON.
Jock Martin Watson – age 22 – Sergeant/Flight Engineer (1493014) 7 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
Jock had worked as a traveller in the drapery trade with his uncle William Austin of Hoole Road, Chester for five years and he was living with the family at Kilmory Park Road, Hoole when he enlisted in 1942. He had almost completed his 45 operations when his Lancaster bomber took off from RAF Oakington, near Cambridge, to attack the flying-bomb launch site at Coubronne in France. It is thought that the aircraft was brought down by a German night-fighter.
Born 1921 in Holywood, Dumfriesshire.
Son of John and Jessie Watson of Newbridge, Terregles, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 24 June 1944 and buried in Wormhoudt Communal Cemetery, France.
Named on the Terregles War Memorial and on the Hollywood Parish WW2 War Memorial.


SGT J.C.B. WEBSTER.
James Charles Bryden Webster – age 31 – Sergeant (938305) 11 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
James's Blenheim bomber had taken off from a landing ground in Egypt for a raid on the airfield at Derna in Libya but the aircraft was was shot down by a German fighter over Bomba Bay near Tobruk
Born 1910 in Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire,
Son of the late Charles John Webster (died 1933) and of Lillias Rutherford (Bryden) Webster who married in 1908 in Khartoum, Sudan. Lillias was born in Dalry in 1882 and died there in 1961. Husband of Agnes Rew (Moir) Webster of Chatham, Kent who he married in 1932 in Temple, Midlothian.
Missing in Action on 11 December 1941 and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
Not named on any local War Memorial.

SGT J.J. WEMYSS.
John James Wemyss – age 21 – Sergeant (1344329) 619 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Jack was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy before joining the County Council in Kirkcudbright. He was a keen footballer with St. Cuthbert Wanderers. 619 Squadron was formed at Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, on 18th April 1943. Two months later John's Lancaster bomber took off for an air test over the Wash and was lost without a trace.
Born 1921 in Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Son of John James Wemyss and Georgina Hunter (Riley) Wemyss of Kirkcudbright.
Died on Active Service on 9 June 1943 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Named on the Kirkcudbright War Memorial, on the Kirkcudbright Academy memorial and on the St. Mary's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright.


SGT R. WILKIN.
Robert Wilkin – age 27 – Sergeant/Air Gunner (516847) 90 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
Robert was born in Annan in Dumfriesshire but the family moved to Innerleithen in Peebleshire when he was a boy. He returned and started his apprenticeship as a painter in Annan before he joined the RAF in 1932. 90 Squadron were equipped with the Boeing B17 Flying Fortress and Robert's aircraft had taken off from RAF Kinloss in Moray for a raid on the German Battleship “Admiral Scheer” at Oslo harbour in Norway but the aircraft was attacked by a German fighter. The Fortress managed to return and crash landed at Kinloss but Robert had been killed in the action.
Born 1914 in Annan.
Son of the late John Wilkin and of Janet (Newall) Wilkin of 19 Carlisle Place and of Kelhead, Annan.
Killed in Action on 8 September 1941 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)
Named on the Annan War Memorial.


F/SGT J. WILSON.
John Wilson – age ?? – Flight Sergeant (1120348) 206 Squadron, Coastal Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
In late 1943 206 Squadron was based on the Azores, flying Boeing Flying Fortresses on anti-submarine patrols. John's aircraft was returning from a patrol when it was diverted to Gibraltar because of the weather. However Gibraltar was also fog-bound and the aircraft crashed into the sea off Carnero Point while trying to make a landing.
Born 19?? in Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 29 November 1943 and named on the Gibraltar Memorial, Gibraltar.
Named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.

SGT J.F.L. WILSON.
James Ferguson Lindsay Wilson – age 24 – Sergeant/Flight Engineer (612661) 106 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
James's Lancaster bomber was on its first operation. It had taken off from RAF Syerston, near Newark, Nottinghamshire for a raid on Essen but was shot down in the target area. The crew were buried in the Ehrenfriedhof at Dusseldorf but were re-interred in Reichswald Forest in 1946.
Born 1919 in Kirkpatrick-Durham, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Son of James William and Mary Wilson of Kirkpatrick-Durham.
Killed in Action on 5 March 1943 and buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.
Named on the Kirkpatrick-Durham War Memorial.

William Young – age 22 – Flying Officer (154575) 626 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
William was commissioned from Leading Aircraftman (1367981) in December 1943. He was the bomb aimer when his Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Wickenby in Lincolnshire for a raid on the Wintershall synthetic-oil refinery at Lutzkendorf near Leipzig but the aircraft crashed in the North Sea.
Born 1922 in Avondale, Lanarkshire.
Son of late William Young and of Marion Cooper (Findlay) Young of Beuchan, Keir who had married in Avondale in 1918.
Missing in Action on 5 April 1945 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Named on the Keir War Memorial, on the Keir Parish Church memorial now in Penpont Parish Church and on a memorial plaque at Wallace Hall Academy.

TWO NAMES ADDED TO THE MEMORIAL


L.A.C. H. HAMILTON
.
Harold Douglas Hamilton – age 22 – Leading Aircraftman (626291) 45 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
Douglas worked for his step-father as a driver until he joined the RAF in November 1938. He went to the Middle-East in March 1940 and served as a driver in his squadron. He died of appendicitis and peritonitis in the 23rd General Hospital at Sarafand in Palestine.
Born 1918 in Rerrick Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Son of Margaret Hamilton Clark and step-son of George Alexander Clark who married in 1923 in Rerrick.
Died on Active Service on 19 July 1941 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Named on the Auchencairn War Memorial in Rerrick Parish.


W/O A.S. PATTERSON.
Andrew Steel Patterson – age 21 – Warrant Officer, Observer (581409) 27 Operational Training Unit, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
Andrew had enlisted in the summer of 1939. He had been badly injured when his Anson aircraft of the 27 OTU, based at RAF Lichfield in Staffordshire, flew into the side of Snaefell on the Isle of Man in January 1942. He rejoined his unit and was the Navigator on a Wellington bomber when the aircraft was lost during the then record raid on Dusseldorf. OTUs with advanced trained crews and instructors made up the compliment for any maximum effort required on important raids. Andrew was buried in Muenchen-Gladbach Town Cemetery but was re-interred in Rheinberg in July 1946.
Born 1921 in Dumfries.
Son of William and Eliza (Steel) Patterson of Dumfries.
Grandson of John Steel of Howmains Farm, Glencaple, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 31 July 1942 and buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany.
Named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the Maxwelltown West Church memorial.
