Wigtownshire Free Press (22/11/1917): Mrs Russell, Dalrymple Street, Stranraer, has received official intimation that her son, Signaller R Collins, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, was killed in action on the Western front on September 25. Signaller Collins, who served his apprenticeship to the grocery trade with Baillie Collins, Hanover Street, enlisted in June 1916, and prior to that was manager of a grocer's shop in Glasgow. In a letter to his mother the Chaplain states that Signaller Collins was killed instantaneously by shellfire. He and the other sinaller did extraorinarily good work on the 25th, they being the only means of communication, and repeatedly went out through a heavy German barrage. An elder brother, Private Peter Collins, was badly wounder some time ago.

[The article also carries a photograph of Signaller Collins]
