I have been trying to find information on my Great Uncle (Private John McNeill, 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders Reg No 4494) who was killed at the Battle of Atbara on 8/4/1898. So far I have found his name at the St Giles High Kirk. He came from Newbattle before he joined up in 1893. Are there any memorials apart from the St Giles memorial that includes servicemen killed before WW1, and if so, with the information I have provided above, would this name appear on other memorials known to your members? Unfortunately I have seen web references that misspell his name (such as Neal, MacNeal) which doesn't help my research.

I think it unlikely that he is on other memorials. Generally there were very few civic memorials at this time, only one from Crimea and a handfull from Boer war. The memorial in St Giles will be a Regimental One and there will normally be only one of those, however I do recall where an exact copy was made of one memorial and the copy placed in a different location. Your only other chance will be if the family had an individual memorial made and placed in the local church. These tend to be for sons of ministers, local lairds and other dignitaries. Any local papers which report his death may have details of any memorials in the following period.

I am using my phone to check for posts so can't check other posts just now but you should find an Atbara memorial on the Outside Scotland section of this forum
