I have been researching George A. Durnion. He is listed on a Church War Memorial and in "Coatbridge and The Great War" as being a Private in The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
However, on both CWGC and SNWM he is listed as being in The Gordon Highlanders.
He was killed in action on 31/07/1917 which is the date given in all the records I have seen.
He is listed as George Durnian on Coatbridge Civic Memorial but there are no listings under this spelling so I assume the spelling there is wrong.
Can anyone help and tell me which regiment is the correct one.
Many thanks.

Hi Morag,
I'm sure someone with better knowledge and resources than I will be along soon to sort out your query.
I think it's likely he enlisted in the Gordon's, but was later attached to the Argyll's, which was common, and it was with them he was serving when he died.
So even though he was in the Argyll's when died, he was still technically in the Gordon's....well, that's my guess

George A Durnion served as 277702 in the A&S Highlanders but was transferred later to the Gordons.
Name: DURNION, GEORGE A.
Initials: G A
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Gordon Highlanders
Unit Text: 6th Bn.
Date of Death: 31/07/1917
Service No: 288006
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 38.
Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL
Off the top of my head I think the 6th Gordons attacked at Frezenberg on the first day of the the 3rd Battle of Ypres - attacking Beck and Borry Farms with a great number of casualties. _________________

Thanks to you both for this info. I thought it might have been a "transfer" but couldn't find the connection.
Derek...Can I ask where your info was found? I've tried keying in that service # to SNWM but nothing comes up. Perhaps you have other means or contacts??
Anyway, I'm grateful for your answers.

Hi Morag,
I assume Derek got the number from the Medal Index Card (MIC) - see NA.
The actual cards are available on Ancestry, but in this case no additional information is given apart from the reference code to the actual medal rolls held at the National Archives, Kew.
