GLENALMOND COLLEGE , GLENALMOND , PERTHSHIRE has in its Chapel a memorial to

TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF

ALEXANDER CUMINE RUSSELL , Younger of Aden Aberdeenshire, A student of this College 1848 to 1850 who as a Young Officer of the 74th HIGHLANDERS at the Wreck of the Birkenhead February 26th 1852 Met a Hero's Death"

Seems that Alexander Cumine RUSSELL was born in 1833 and as a young officer aged only 18 years he was being transported on the HMS Birkenhead to South Africa after his training . Because he was young and an Officer he was put in charge of a cutter full of women and children.

As they were rowing away from the wreck , one of the women in the boat saw her husband struggling in the water . Without any hesitation , Russell jumped out of the boat , helped the seaman into it and then swam behind the cutter . Barely five minutes after entering the water he was attacked and killed by sharks.

The Glenalmond Chronicle reported the unveiling of his memorial in 1899 and declared "I see not how any boy of Glenalmond can ever do a deed that shall better his !"

The troops were requested by Lt Col Sir Harry Smith to fight in the 8th XHOSA WARS (also called CAPE FRONTIER WARS )

Thanks to Mrs Aase Goldsmith for alerting me to this and the archivist Elaine Mundill for assistance in obtaining the photograph. Thanks also to Glenalmond College for permission to use it.

I had two write ups in the Craigie column of the Courier & Advertiser about the forthcoming anniversary of the sinking of the HMS Birkenhead on 26 Feb 1852 .

The first craigie column story of mine (14 paragraphs )was headed "TRAGEDY SPAWNED WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST PROTOCOL " and that was published on Saturday 19 Feb 2011 and the follow up shorter 4 para story of mine was headed BLACK WATCH CONNECTION and that was dated Thursday 24 Feb 2011 . The first article included the info on the St Giles Cathedral memorial to the named officers of 74 Highlanders and NCOs and men .

Following my two write ups in the Craigie column of the Courier & Advertiser there were two follow ups and one was from Elaine Mundill, Archivist at Glenalmond College . I had not heard of that memorial in the college before so excellent feedback from my write ups !
