The RMS Lady Hawkins was torpedoed off the coast of North Carolina with an estimated loss of 251 casualties.
Would anybody have any further details on this lady or any memorial that she may be commemorated on. I have a suspicion from a comment that she was on her way to the United Kingdom to enlist in the WAAF.
Any general details most welcome.

There is an Alice Maud Reid, daughter of Henry Sharpe Reid and Alice Maud Dutton on Ancestry.

On the 1901 Census, the family are at Aigburth, Laird Street, Coatbridge. As well as Henry (34), Alice (2 Cool

and Alice (5) there are Henry (7), Elizabeth (3) and Edward (11 months).

I have now discovered a REID, A.M. WAAF on the Coatbridge WW2 Memorial posted by Adam Brown. I remember querying this with Adam some time ago as it is almost impossible to see with the naked eye. However I didn't pursue it then as I assumed it was a case of NOK giving details of a discharged WAAF.

However, this may well prove my theory that she applied through the British Embassy to join the WAAF who sent her home to finish the process of enlistment and NOK advised, incorrectly, that she was a WAAF.

She is however commemorated as Civilian War Dead under R.M.S. "LADY HAWKINS" and I would be unable to find any evidence to change that so I will not pursue her further and will record her as a Female Casualty in my Miscellaneous Section with appropriate details.

Thank you, Tony, for your help. Much appreciated and I'm sure with all your experience that your conclusion is correct.

I will add these details to what I already have and continue my search for the other named personnel on the War Memorials at the Church. Hopefully the Remembrance Books will be dedicated in November.
