Pte. Richard A. (Aitken) Mackay, 26935, K.O.S.B., 6th Bn., died 03.05.1917 age 35. (Born Edinburgh)

I have his death on a War Return and have identified him on SNWM but can't find him on CWGC.

I've tried Mackay, McKay, Mackie, McKie, MacKee, McKee, MacKie and McKie without success. Everyone else on the same War Return is on Arras Memorial, Bay 6, so maybe I just haven't thought of another likely/unlikely spelling although I think I've looked through nearly every page!

Anne

I have just searched 29,000 'Ms' on the Arras Memorial by Regimental Number and did not find 26935. I gave up when I reached to 'MOs'.

I also searched Geoff's Search Engine by various spellings and by Regtl. Nos. and again with no success.

No further suggestions, sorry!

Tony

Is it just possible that he was not a war casualty and there was a documentary error somewhere?

What are we like Tony - I did the same!! Page after page after page ..... Laughing

The details were from a War Return as I said - one that Derek (delboy) downloaded from Scotland's People and when adding the names to the spreadsheet I keep, I always try and cross-reference as many sources as possible - that's the reason for me always asking for help to find people I can't. (Fresh eyes and all that!)

Are these not supposed to be more reliable than either CWGC or SNWM?

The following are his details as listed on SNWM
Surname MacKAY
Firstname Richard Aitken
Service Number 26935
Date Death 03/05/1917
Place of birth Edinburgh
Other 6th Bn.
SNWM roll THE KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS
Rank Pte
Theatre of death F.& F.

Hi Anne

He is listed by CWGC, but not on the Arras Memorial to the Missing.
His mother, as NOK, may well have had the christian name in the CWGC entry changed to Aitken.

Name: MACKAY, AITKEN
Initials: A
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: King's Own Scottish Borderers
Unit Text: 6th Bn.
Age: 34
Date of Death: 03/05/1917
Service No: 26935
Additional information: Son of Mrs. Marion Robertson (formerly Mackay), of 6, St. John St., Edinburgh.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: IX. C. 48.
Cemetery: ORCHARD DUMP CEMETERY, ARLEUX-EN-GOHELLE

Thanks Jim!!

I should have thought about putting his middle name first.

When in doubt - jumble up the names and try again!!

Well done Jim!

At least I got a bit more research practice but as Anne said didn't do the simple thing of reversing the forenames. The lesson don't believe all you see!

He came up first time at 4th in the list for me !
If you have problems with a name and think you have exhausted all possible variations then try entering the number ONLY or the date ONLY. It usually works if the record is in my system. 5 digits usually gives a manageable result list, you may have to scroll through a date result or you could enter just the first letter of the surname with the date to shorten the result list. Less is more.

cheers,

geoff

Thanks Geoff

No criticism of the Search Engine, it's second to none it was more likely my eyes.
