Whitehill Secondary School, 280 Onslow Drive, Glasgow G31 2QF

OS Grid Ref: NS 613653

Whitehill School has always been in Dennistoun but it has moved once in its past. The school was founded in 1891 in a large red sandstone building in Whitehill Street and became famous for the quality of the education provided. The old school was demolished after the new school was opened in 1977. The original school bell, a teacher's desk and pupil's desk have been preserved and can be found in the entrance to the new school. The school motto is “Altiora Peto” (I seek higher things). http://rubble.ultralab.ac.uk/whitehill/default.htm

The WW1 & WW2 memorial is located in the main entrance hall.

Either someone nipped a bit smartly and changed it or I shall have to go to Specksavers.

How I picked up Charlotte 'B' I have no idea so Charlotte Morris it is!

Due to other research Charlotte Arnold was put on hold however, further research has indicated that St. Stephen’s Hospital, Chelsea, London sustained severe damage in an air raid on 16th October 1940 killing 2 Sisters, 5 Nurses and 13 civilians. I have included Charlotte, a Civil Nursing Reserve the equivalent of a Nursing Auxiliary, in the total of 5 Nurses.
I contacted the hospital archives (now Chelsea & Westminster Hospital) on two occasions, April & June, regarding Charlotte and offering reimbursement for their service or at least a donation, so far no response on either occasion!
I note that her father was a Widower with no indication of age or circumstances, so before I even attempt to ascertain if she was buried in the London area, would anybody have any information regarding her possible burial in Scotland that I assume would have been in the Glasgow area?
Grateful for any information.
Tony

Hi Tony - It's been a while but..........
Aberdeen Weekly Journal 31/10/1940 p.6
NURSE'S FUNERAL AT ELGIN
The funeral took place to Elgin Cemetery on Wednesday of Miss Charlotte Morris Arnold, a member of the nursing staff as a London hospital, who was killed when the hospital was bombed last week.
Miss Arnold who was a daughter of Mr. H.L. Arnold, retired civil servant, Glasgow, and a niece of the Misses Asher, 27 Academy Street, Elgin was a native of Glasgow. She was educated at Hutcheson's Girls School and later at Elgin Academy.
Choosing the nursing profession as a career, Miss Arnold had her early training at Woodend Hospital, Aberdeen, and was afterwards doing nursing work in London. At the outbreak of war she became a member of the Civil Nursing Reserve, and was engage at that work at the time of her death.

Charlotte is named on the Elgin Civic War Memorial but I don't see her on any other school memorial.

Unusual for a couple of reasons, Klagenfurt is the only CWGC cemetery in Austria; and apart from a comment in a footnote to an article about the SOE which mentions Crawford arrest, I cannot find anything about his life during the war.

CRAWFORD McKAY
Crawford McKay – age 30 – Captain (259234) Royal Engineers attached to the Inter-Service Liaison Department,.
During World War II, the Inter-Services Liaison Department was the cover name adopted by the Secret Intelligence Service. Crawford was commissioned in the Royal Engineers in January 1943. He was serving with the Special Operations Executive when he was arrested and killed by the Gestapo. He was buried in Graz cemetery but was re-interred in Klagenfurt in November 1945.
Born 1914 in Camlachie, Glasgow. Son of John and Jane Rutherford (Linning) McKay of East Finchley, Middlesex.
(The family grave is in Glasgow's Riddrie Park Cemetery – SWGP p.32 )
Died on Active Service on 11 November 1944.
Commonwealth War Grave – Klagenfurt War Cemetery, Austria.
