No Paul, that's the "other" Roberton, out Hawick way. I think it must be a bit bigger than here. There is a Roberton lad named on Whiston WM which is a couple of miles down the road - but even that has only three names!

I have now laid my hands on a local Roberton history pamphlet written for the Millennium and it throws a little more light on the Roberton Church memorial - or should I say the memorials at Roberton churches!

It states, "After World War 1 two stained glass windows were put into the West Church, commemorating James Waddell, John Wilson, John Halliday, Hugh Neilson and William MacGregor, all killed on active service as was William Drummond. Family windows commemorating those killed in the war were also installed in the East Church."

Waddell, Halliday, Wilson and Neilson are all named on the memorial for the Wiston and Roberton parish located in the Wiston Church grounds.

Both churches are private residences and I will try and nab the owners when I can. However, the (briefly mentioned) East Church, which is next-door but one to me, seems to have entirely modern windows.

A book of old photographs of Clydesdale includes one of the Drill Hall at Carluke which was paid for by public subscription as a memorial to those who had fallen in the Boer War. It was built around 1904 and provided a drill hall for the Lanarkshire Yeomanry. It was demolished some years ago.

An update of Roberton "West" Church - more properly the former United Free Church. The stained glass windows installed in the Church (as referred to in the press clipping on the Wiston and Roberton thread) do still exist in situ. I was talking to the owner today (from a safe distance) and he confirmed that they are in the church, now his home. When the Corona Virus restrictions are lifted I will pay a visit and start a separate thread.

I found this article today in the WISHAW PRESS and ADVERTISER of 1 JUNE 1962 page 14.
Burgh counts the cost of World War 11
Close on 400 names to go on War Memorial.
As the result of information provided by various organisations and members of the public it has been possible to complete the first list of residents of the Burgh who died between 3rd September 1939 and 15 August 1945 as a result of the 1939-1945 war. The list has been prepared so that the names of those who gave their lives for their country can be inscribed on the Cenotaph in the Duchess of Hamilton Park.

Comparing a couple of names on the the list with the memorial it seems that this is the MOTHERWELL War Memorial??????

Motherwell and Wishaw were united as one Burgh in 1920.

The cenotaph is inscribed as the Burgh of Motherwell but I assume the WW2 panel is for the united burgh.

Back to the Roberton West Church stained glass window memorials, I now have photographs of them so, if anyone has access to Photobucket I'd be happy to pass them on to start two threads, one for the parish names and one for the individual memorial.

I was in Crawford Village Hall for a windfarm event today. There are three plaques in there, two are rolls of honour and one is a memorial. Unfortunately, being a bit of a dinosaur with technology, we didn't have a camera available. One for a future visit I think. I guess this will be the Elvanfoot Parishioners memorial.

My wife was at Crawford Village Hall this morning and took photos of the three memorials/Rolls of Honour therein. One is very probably from Elvanfoot Church, the other two are, possibly, from Crawford Church. I can provide the photos for anyone on Photobucket to start a thread. Just drop me a pm.
