THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 04.09.1915
SCOTTISH ARTIST KILLED

Mr Alf. A. Webster, who died in France fighting as a lieutenant in the Gordon Highlanders, was one of the most accomplished of the younger Scottish artists in stained glass. He received his training in the studio of the late Mr Stephen Adam, Glasgow. His ability was so marked that, while still a very young man, he was assumed by Mr Adam as a partner. Mr Webster learned much from Mr Adam, whose genius for colour was recognised by all. He has windows in Lansdowne and Trinity Churches, Glasgow; in St. Andrews and Trinity Churches, Edinburgh; in churches at Larbert, Thornliebank, Dunlop, Kirkcaldy, Crieff Parish Church and many other places. Mr Webster's death at 30 years of age is a great loss to Scottish art. He joined the Gordon Highlanders in March of this year, and went to the front three months later. He was wounded on August 17, and died on August 24. He is survived by his wife and three children.

For anyone researching this memorial, please do not assume that those with crosses against their names are the only ones killed.

"Stewart Phyn Crombie was born into a long architectural lineage (see Alexander Crombie) and was the son of Alan Burgess Crombie and the brother of Wilfrid Fitzalan Crombie and Alan Crombie. He was articled to Sir John James Burnet in Glasgow but he was killed in action at the Battle of Gazah with the 5th KOSB in the First World War." Pretty sure this is the same man and he does not have a cross beside his name.

There was an item on BBC Scotland News tonight about the renovation of this and the plan to put it back in the School of Art once the rebuild is complete.

Anyone know if the Roll was installed or if it is still safe?
