In today's Daily Record
Quote:

Thieves make off with £7K gates to Scots war memorial - and nobody notices for two months

THE huge bronze gates for a war memorial were carted off by thieves two months before council chiefs realised they were missing.

The gates disappeared some time in June or July.

But locals in Tayport, Fife, assumed the council had been told - and police were only informed on Thursday.

Thanks JMB. We've also been following the story on the Tayport war memorial thread here:

It defies logic than metal merchants will happily accept the likes of this as 'scrap', without wondering where the hawkers obtained them!
Locally our big problem is not falling down manholes, as the nicking of these and 'sievers' is rife.
The answer seems to be that the Police need to visit the metal merchant's sites more often and see what's lying around, or just pull up the abundance of hawkers Transit's plying their trade around the towns and villages.

The East Wemyss memorial bronze statue was stolen a few years ago and turned up, if I remember correctly, in Yorkshire.
No-one was ever prosecuted.
