I've posted this to the blog, can anyone help with identifying the uniform?

http://scottishmilitary.blogspot.com/2010/10/can-you-identify-uniform.html

I know there are people out there who can identify a particular tartan in a black and white photo...but I'm not one of them.

Anyone got any ideas?

The sporran made me think of the 1st Sutherland Highland Rifle Volunteers and the surname Coghill (a Caithness name) and Thurso were the clinchers.

The tartan is government and the badge will be that of Clan Sutherland, a wildcat rampant, and the bit at the top are representations of feathers in silver. One feather a lieutenant, two feathers a captain, three feathers a major and four feathers for the colonel.

I'm not a betting man but I'd put money on him being in the 1st SHRV (later 5th Bn Seaforth Highlanders in 1908)

Cheers

Adam

Definately 1st Sutherland V.R.C. I have a photograph of an unnamed officer of the Caithness companies c1896 wearing exactly the same uniform.
