Also on the main memorial is a name which I presume is a Northern Ireland casualty:

No K.O.S.B. names are photographed. I have these pics if interested.
I stopped at this memorial yesterday on my way back down South and thought that this memorial is in a terrible state and needs one hell or a make over. The council promised me months and months ago this was going to take place and they were going to put the mis-spelling of my relatives names right on it. They have David Sim Cameron Highlanders and Gavin Sim K.O.S.B. down as Sime.

Fingers crossed it will be corrected and have its make over soon.

I would disagree with this. Compared with others I've seen it's in very good condition. Compare it with New Stevenston (photos on the forum if you're interested) or even the Hamilton Cenotaph (photos coming shortly) this is fairly well looked after.

Sime David Cameron Highlanders Private
Sime Gavin Kings Own Scottish Borderers Corporal

These 2 were my great grans brothers. The spelling of their names are wrong as they were Gavin and David SIM no E.

My great Grans husband my GGF Daniel Wallace was in the Scots Guards and the story goes that he passed David on the line the day David was killed. Davids body was never recovered an his M.I.C. states death accepted as 28/3/18.

Gavin spent 10 month in hospital before he died of wounds on the 5/5/16. He was wounded the day the btn. landed in France. I will have to get the war diary to see if he is mentioned because he must have been the first or one of the first soldiers to be wounded in the K.O.S.B.

I spoke to the man at the council a while ago and they said they were going to change it, when is another matter.

Their is another spelling mistake on this one

Yuille Halbert Parachute Regiment Private

His first name should be Albert - at least thats what CWGC has him as and its what he is in the Hamilton Advertiser as, at the time Kevin was first mentioning the other two names I asked about this one and was told it would be looked into.

I haven't called in for a while to see if this memorial has had the spelling mistakes changed. Could a pal have a look for me and let me know. The bloke at the council was fantastic when I spoke to him and he told me he would get straight onto the case. This was over 12 months ago now. His original eagerness I feel has dropped.

This is what I recorded for UKNIWM in August 2007.

Larkhall War Memorial Inscription and Additional Details
UKNIWM Ref No 6006

Grid Ref NS759523

The memorial is in two parts. A main memorial to WW1 fallen which is grey granite, octagonal plinth and block with inscription and names of fallen on all 8 sides. Above the octagonal block is a tapering octagonal shaft that bears a, octagonal cross section, small cross. Approximate dimensions are base 3m ‘diameter’, plinth and block 2m high and cross surmounting block 4 to 5m high. Behind the main memorial is a low wall with the WW2 dedication inscription and flanked on either side by the names of the fallen on two panels. Approximate height of the wall and panels is 1m. Wall is 4 to 5m long. The memorial is situated facing Hamilton Road in Glenview Public Park, Larkhall.

Main Dedication Inscription. This is on the plinth facing Glenview Road.

Erected by a grateful community
To the memory of
The men of Larkhall
Who fell in the Great War 1914 – 1918

“Their name liveth for evermore”

WW1 Names of the fallen are on all 8 faces of the main block of the memorial with some names added to the plinth below the main block. Names are generally arranged by regiment and then alphabetically by surname within the regiment. Rank, Forename, or initials, surname and decorations are given. Three men also seem to have university degrees (rather than medals). A more recent addition on the plinth, from 1976 , has the date of death.

The WW1 names are taken from
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~miningvillages/larkhall.html
I have corrected one or two entries by comparing with the photos.

His elder brother, Thomas Hamilton ALSTON, also served and survived WW1.
Thomas was born on 14 Sep 1893 at Muir Street, Larkhall.
Thomas enlisted on 8th August 1914, at Glasgow.
Britain declared war on Germany on 4th August 1914, so Thomas was one of the earliest to ‘sign up’.
Thomas was attached to The Army Service Corps as Driver MS 524 and attained the rank of Lance Corporal.
He was ‘demobbed’ (demobilised) on 19 April, 1919, from 38th Division, Motor Transport Company.

After WW1, the Service Records of all Scottish Regiments were sent to London for storage.
During a German bombing raid on London in WW2, the warehouse where the records were stored was hit and set ablaze. About 80-85% of the records were destroyed. Those that survived are known as the ‘burnt records’.

Fortunately, Thomas’ Service Record has survived.
From what is readable:
1) On 23 Sep 1914, he embarked from Bournemouth on the S.S. Ultonia, and disembarked at Le Havre, France, on 26 Sep 1914. Strange to think that the crossing may have taken 3 days, but this was possibly the time spent on board, and not the actual crossing time.
(Note that the SS Ultonia was sunk on 27 June 1917 by a German U-Boat while on a Trans-Atlantic crossing.
http://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?13513 )
2) On 22 Nov 1915, he was given 7 days ‘compassionate’ leave to attend the funeral of his father.
3) On 22 Nov 1916, while home on leave at age 23, he married Euphemia Hay Sealey age 25, at the Cooperative Hall, Calderhead, Shotts. His brother Andrew was ‘Best Man’.
4) On 30 May 1918 he was ‘appointed’ Lance Corporal.
5) On 06 Jun 1918, he was caught speeding and his ‘fine’ was “forfeits 3 days pay and 1 Good Conduct Badge”.
6) On 19 Apr 1919, he was 'demobbed'.
