Cemetery: DORIAN MEMORIAL

The A&S Herald intimations database at Ayrshire Roots has several entries for Richard with the name either HOFMEYR or HOFMEYER. The entries refer to his rank Lieut. and that he died at sea on board the hospital ship either Vasna or Vasua on 11 September 1917. He was the son of I Hofmeyer and an address of Annickvale, Saltcoats. In addition to intimations from his father and an uncle there are several from "comrade Major R Wheelwright"

Richard is also on the Saltcoats Memorial

The record of soldiers died in the Great War shows Robert was born in Ardrossan and resided in Saltcoats. The A&S Herald intimations database shows his full name as Robert Craig MacGavin; he was the son of William MacGavin of Dockhead Street, Saltcoats. There is also an "in memorium" entry 02/08/1918 showing location "Boesinghe" and "killed 31st July 1917 friend of Spr J Anderson".

Robert is also on the Saltcoats Memorial

The information is identical to the A&S Herald cutting above except for the additional information that Andrew's father Alex was the district traffic superintendant, Caledonian Railways, Edingburgh

This has very usefully identified the A Fulton listed on the George Heriot school war memorial which "Gourdongirl" hadn't been able to identify.

Second-Lieutenant George Arthur Stevenson, 2nd East Yorkshire Regiment, who has died of his wounds in the Base Hospital at Boulogne, was the son of the late Mr Stevenson, Collector of Customs and Excise, Inverness, and his mother is now resident in England. He was a promising young man, and his death is much regretted in Inverness"

The Daily Gazette for Middlesbrough on 15 December 1914 has an obituary for George's father William which details his career in H M Customs and Excise and shows that from 1897 to 1902 William was the Collector for H M Customs in Ardrossan

George is also on the Ardrossan memorial.
