For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid upon enemy trenches. Finding his party suddenly attacked by a machine gun, he attacked it with bombs down the flank and front, putting it out oT action and saving his company from many casualties.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the first two days that the battalion was in support and under very heavy shell fire his able dispositions undoubtedly saved many lives, and his personal example maintained the moral of his men.
