JAMES COULL
Thought to be:
James Johnstone Coull – age 31 – Sergeant (3127309) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
James had been in the army for almost 15 years when he landed with his battalion on the Vichy French island of Madagascar on 5 May 1942.
Born 1911 in Tranent. Son of the late James Coull and of Mary (Johnstone) Coull (from 1921 Mrs George Chambers) of 17 Northfieldeast, Tranent. Husband of Catherine Kay (Reid) Coull of New Row, Tranent who he married in 1937 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 6 May 1942 and buried in Diego Suarez War Cemetery, Madagascar.
Also named on the Tranent War Memorial.


JAMES DOCHERTY

ALEXANDER HOGG
Alexander Smith Hogg – age 26 – Private (2766815) 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
The original 1st Black Watch were forced to surrender in France in 1940. The reformed battalion arrived in Egypt in August 1942 where it fought at the Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942 and then continued to fight in the Tunisian Campaign.
Born 1916 in Ormiston. Son of Alexander and Mary (Smith) Hogg of Co-operative Buildings, Ormiston. Husband of Gladys Margaret (Treasure) Hogg of Gladstone Avenue, Dingwall, Ross-shire who he married in 1941 in Dingwall.
Missing in Action on 13 December 1942 and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.

JAMIESON HOGG
Jamieson Duncan Hogg – age 30 – Trooper (7936598) 7th Royal Tank Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps
In mid-1942, the 7th RTR was captured at Tobruk during the Battle of Gazala, part of the First Battle of El Alamein. Tobruk was surrendered to Italian and German forces on 21 June 1942.
Born 1912 in Pencaitland, East Lothian. Son of William and Margaret (Duncan) Hogg of Ross Crescent, Tranent, East Lothian. Husband of Christina Philip (Peaston) Hogg of Beauly Cottage, Ormiston who he married in 1937 in Tranent, East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 20 June 1942 and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.


JAMES MACK
James Hogg Mack – age 23 – Private (3318404) 5th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
The 5th Battalion fought at El Alamein in 1942, before joining the invasion of Sicily in 1943.
Born 1919 in Ormiston as James Hogg Smith Mack. Son of the late James Mack (died 1936) and of Joan (Smith) Mack of 34 Meadowbank Crescent, Ormiston.
Killed in Action on 14 December 1942 and buried in Benghazi War Cemetery, Libya.


JAMES MACKIE

JAMES SCOTT
James Robert Nisbet Scott – age 20 – Private (14681292) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Born 1924 in Ormiston. Son of John and Mary Scott of Stanley Place, Edinburgh and of Ormiston, East Lothian. Grandson of James of Beech Cottage Ormiston.
Killed in Action on 19 September 1944 and buried in Geel War Cemetery, Belgium.

JOHN (IAN) SCOTT
Thought to be:
John Scott – age 20 – Private (14515880) 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment.
On 6 June 1944, the 1st Battalion came ashore at Normandy. Despite facing machine gun fire, the men captured Le Hamel and Arromanches after a hard fight. The battalion started a three-week fight for the village of Hottot, against the German Panzer-Lehr-Division, in June 1944. This culminated in a major assault on 11 July. Ian was killed near Lingevres and was re-interred in July 1945.
Born 1923 in Ormiston. Son of ?
Killed in Action on 11 July 1944 and buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, France


ANDREW SELKIRK

FREDERICK TAGUE
Frederick Michael (“Derrick”) Tague – age 22 – Sergeant (1342067) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Frederick was onboard a Wellington of 76 Operational Training Unit which flew into the ground near Hebron in low cloud during a training flight.
Born c.1922 in Lanarkshire. Son of Hugh and Rose Ann (Flynne) Tague of George Crescent, Ormiston.
Died on Service on 6 October 1944 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.


LEONARD TURNER
James Leonard Turner – age 19 – Sergeant (1823803) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Turner was onboard an Anson of 10 Air Gunners School, based at Barrow in Furness when the aircraft flew into Black Combe Screes near Whitbeck, Cumberland in bad weather when returning from an air gunnery exercise.
Born 1925 in Morham, East Lothian. Son of James and Janet (Leishman) Turner of Stanley Place, Ormiston.
Died on Service on 2 January 1945 and buried in Ormiston Cemetery. (CWG)
