Any info on John Hay there are 80 listed on the CWGC was he from this area or a farm worker from elsewhere?

Is Will8am Wigham a mispelling of Wickham?

JOHN ALLAN
John Allan – age 21 – Private (461321) 44th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
In 1911 the family were living at George Street, Ormiston where John was working underground as a colliery horse handler. He was farming and living with his sister Mrs John Sutherland at Isabella in Manitoba when he enlisted in Winnipeg in December 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia with the 61st (Winnipeg) Battalion in April 1916 and joined the 44th Battalion in France in August.
Born 1895 in Liberton, Midlothian. Son of George and Isabella (Hamilton) Allan of Hill Head, Musselburgh. Husband of Euphemia Allan of Arrow River, Manitoba who he married in 1916.
Missing in Action on 25 October 1916 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.


GAVIN ANDERSON
Gavin Agnew Anderson – age 26 – Private (40046) 10th/11th Battaion, Highland Light Infantry.
Gavin lived his early life in Stirlingshire before becoming a collier at the Ormiston Pit. He enlisted as Private (1476) in the Royal Scots and he was transferred to the HLI in France. Gavin died in the 45th Casualty Clearing Station at Dernancourt.
Born 1890 in Strathblane, Stirlingshire as Gavin Anderson Agnew. Son of Mary Agnew. Adopted son of Robert and Jane (Agnew) Anderson of Edenkiln, Strathblane. Husband of Christina Dingwall (Runciman) Anderson, (born Ormiston) of 4 Damside Cottages, Gorgie Road, Edinburgh who he married in 1914 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 22 October 1916 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

Thomas Bell – age 27 – Private (41674) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Thomas enlisted in Ormiston.
Born 1891 in Dalkeith, Midlothian. Son of Robert and Margaret (Stenhouse) Bell of 814 Horne Terrace, Viewforth, Edinburgh. Husband of Harriet Elizabeth (Stewart) Bell of Cousland, Dalkeith who he married in 1916 in Cranston, Midlothian.
Missing in Action on 22 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

JOHN BLACKSHAW
John Blackshaw – age 31 – Private (325452) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John of East Peaston, Ormiston was a joiner when he enlisted as Private (1617) in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in December 1914. He joined the 1/8th Battalion in France in February 1915 and was evacuated to the Military Hospital at Netley in Hampshire due to illness in June 1916. John returned to his battalion in June 1917.
Born 1887 in Ormiston. Son of he late Mary (Hutchison) Blackshaw (died 1917) and of John Blackshaw of East Peaston, Ormiston.
Killed in Action on 22 March 1918 and buried in Lebucquiere Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


CHARLES BROWN
Charles Brown – age 32 – Private (5618) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Charles was a coal miner living with his family at Tyneview Cottage in Ormison when his last child was born in May 1914. I assume that he was a reservist as he landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 14 August 1914.
Born c.1882 in Berwick. Son of the late John and Mary Ann (Rodger) Brown formerly of Cockpen, Midlothian. Husband (aged 26) of Lizzie Hood (Davidson) Brown who he married as Charles Rodger Brown in 1908 in Cockpen.
Killed in Action on 11 November 1914 and buried in New Irish Farm Cemetery, Belgium.


JOHN BROWN
John Brown – age 20 – Private (914) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was a member of the Territorial 8th Royal Scots and he was mobilised in August 1914, landing at Le Havre in November 1914.
Born 1895 in Slamannan, Stirlingshire. Son of the late Margaret Allan (Inverarity) Brown (died 1908) and of James Brown.
Died of Wounds on 25 May 1915 and buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France.


THOMAS CHALMERS
Thomas Chalmers – age 20 – Private (S/5137) 8th/10th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Thomas landed with the 10th Battalion at Boulogne in July 1915. The 8th and 10th Battalions amalgamated in May 1916.
Born 1896 in Ormiston as Thomas Mathieson Chalmers. Son of Archibald and Mary Jane (Mathieson) Chalmers of Brewery Cottage, Ormiston.
Missing in Action on 31 July 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

ALEXANDER CHRISTIE
Not listed by CWGC – out of timeframe.
Alexander was a coal miner who had served in the Gordon Highlanders after the war as Private (2865761) He was discharged from the army in June 1921 and died of tuberculosis at Clark Buildings in Ormiston.
Born 1896 in Ormiston. Son of the late William Christie (died 1911) and of Mary Ann (McLeod) Christie of High Street, Ormiston.
Died on 18 August 1923.


JOHN AUGUSTEN DEVINE
John Devine – age 19 – Private (16365) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
By 1904 the family were in Loch Road, Tranent. John landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed two months later.
Born 1896 at Arniston, Stobhill, Midlothian as John Augustine Devine. Son of William and Bridget (O'Brien) Devine of Tranent and of Ormiston.
Killed in Action on 20 July 1915 and buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-l'Avoue, France.
Also named on the Tranent War Memorial.


DANIEL FERGUSON
Daniel Alderwood Ferguson – age 17 – Private (23009) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Daniel was an assistant cooper at Glenkinchie Distillery, Pencaitland when he enlisted in May 1915. He declared his age to be 19 years. He joined his battalion in October 1915.
Born 1899 in Pencaitland, Ormiston. Son of John and Rosina (Cassidy) Ferguson of Glenkinchie, Pencaitland, Ormiston.
Killed in Action on 19 December 1915 and buried in Maple Copse Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Pencaitland War Memorial.

PETER FERGUSON
Peter Ferguson – age 41 – Sergeant (49264) 7th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers.
Peter was gamekeeper at Fountainhall, Pencaitland, Ormiston when he enlisted in the the 1st Sportsmen's Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He landed with the battalion as Lance Corporal (1156) at Boulogne in November 1915. He was posted to the 7th Battalion in December 1916.
Born 1876 in Gargunnock, Stirlingshire. Son of William and Isabella (Kennedy) Ferguson of Meiklewood Cottage, Gargunnock. Husband of Jessie (Scott) Ferguson of Ormiston Hall, Ormiston who he married in 1903 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 26 February 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Pencaitland War Memorial and on the Gargunnock Parish War Memorial.


PETER FERGUSSON M.M.
Peter Fergusson, Military Medal – age 21 – Gunner (84167) "B" Battery, 78th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Peter landed with his Battery in France in July 1915. He was awarded his MM for his actions on the Somme in the summer of 1916.
Born 1895 in Trinity Gask, Perthshire as Fergusson. Son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Douglas) Fergusson of Tyne Bank, Ormiston.
Died of Wounds on 16 January 1917 and buried in Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte, France.
Also named on the Tullibardine War Memorial in Perthshire and on the Trinity Gask War Memorial.


ANDREW FULTON

Andrew Fulton – age 45+ – Private (82245) Royal Defence Corps.
Andrew was a confectioner and newsagent at the Wynd, Ormiston when he enlisted as Private (462102) in the Labour Corps in January 1918. He was serving with the 105th Company in Oswestry, North Wales when he married in June 1918. He was transferred as Private (82245) to the RDC and due to illness he was discharged from the Army and awarded a Silver War Badge (B26521) in October 1918.
Born 1876 in Dreghorn, Ayrshire. Son of the late Mary (Adams) Fulton (died 1909) and of Andrew Fulton of Dreghorn. Husband of Marion (Henderson) Fulton who he married in 1918 in Edinburgh.
Date of death not known.

ROBERT G. GIBSON
Robert Horsburgh Gibson – age 20 – Private (1978) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert landed with his battalion at Le Havre in February 1915.
Born 1895 in Edinburgh. Son of the late Helen Paterson (Megson) Gibson (died 1895) and of Robert Horsburgh Gibson of Peaston Bank, Pencaitland, Ormiston.
Killed in Action on 18 June 1915 and buried in Chapelle-d'Armentieres Old Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Pencaitland War Memorial as Robert H. Gibson.


JAMES GORDON
James Gordon – age 26 – Private (6793) 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, Scots Guards.
James was a coal miner when he enlisted in the Scots Guards in August 1907. He transferred to the Army Reserve in August 1910 and was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with the 1st Scots Guards at Le Havre on 14 August 1914 but he was evacuated home in October and discharged from the army as no longer fit for war service due to heart disease in November. He was awarded a Silver War Badge (72511). James died at his home in Ormiston.
Born 1890 in Ormiston as James Robertson Gordon. Son of James and Mary (Robertson) Gordon of Duncan's Buildings, Ormiston. Husband of Ethel (Smith) Gordon of Gladstone House, Main Street, Ormiston who he married in 1912 in Edinburgh.
Died on 9 January 1917 and buried in Ormiston Old Churchyard. (CWG)


EBEN GROSSART
John Gillis Grossert – age 32 – Lance Corporal (5400) 9th Regiment, South African Infantry.
In 1901, aged 16, Ebenezer was a hall-boy at Ormiston Hall. He enlisted in December 1915 and sailed to France in February 1916. He returned to South Africa on the Hospital Ship “Guildford Castle” landing at Durban in March 1917.
Born 1885 in Stobhill, Midlothian as Ebenezer Grossert. Son of Thomas and Grace (Gillis) Grossert of Peaston. Ormiston.
Died on Service on 1 April 1917 and buried in Durban (Ordnance Road) Military Cemetery, South Africa.


JOHN HAY
John Hay – age 32 – Pioneer (41326) 67th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
In 1901 and 1911 John was a coal miner in Ormiston. He landed with his Company at Mudros before they moved to near Lala Baba at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli in July/August 1915.
Born 1883 in Tranent as John Smith Hay. Son of the late Elizabeth (Smith) Hay (died 1902) and of John Hay of Ormiston.
Missing in Action on 9 August 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Andrew Hogarth – age 20 – Private (25489) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a ploughman at The Murrays Farm, Ormiston when he enlisted in July 1916.
Born 1897 in Newbattle, Midlothian. Son of Angus and Catherine Henderson (Sligo) Hogarth of The Murrays, Ormiston.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Bailleul Road West Cemetery, St. Laurent-Blangy, France.


PATRICK KEEGAN
Patrick Keegan – age 19 – Private (40320) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Patrick enlisted as Private (1386) in the Royal Scots and was posted to the KOSB in France.
Born 1898 in Pencaitland, Ormiston. Son of John and Catherine (Finigan) Keegan of Glen Kinchie Distillery, Pencaitland, Ormiston.
Missing in Action on 23 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Pencaitland War Memorial.

James Brown Kerr – age 28+ – Lance Corporal (312935) Labour Corps.
James as Private (5135) landed at Boulogne with the 9th Gordon Highlanders in July 1915. He was transferred as Lance Corporal (123544) to the Labour Corps and discharged from the Army in October 1918.
Born 1891 as James Brown Kerr in Tranent, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian.
Son of the late Thomas Watt Kerr (died 1912) and of Agnes (Sheddan) Kerr of 17 Clark Buildings Ormiston.

JOHN LOGAN
John Logan – age 29 – Lance Corporal (4180) 18th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
John was a coal miner in Thirroul, South Coast, New South Wales when he enlisted in December 1915. He sailed from Sydney in March 1916, arriving in England in July and moving to France to join his battalion in September.
Born 1889 in Ormiston. Son of John and Elizabeth (Martin) Logan of Briery Cottage, Ormiston.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1918 and buried in Hangard Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

WILLIAM LUSK
William Lusk – age 21 – Private (S/10920) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William joined the 8th Gordon Highlanders in France in November 1915. At some point he was posted to the 2nd Battalion. William was wounded and evacuated to hospital at Stobhill in Glasgow in March 1917 and he died there.
Born 1895 in Dreghorn, Ayrshire. Son of James and Isabella (Fulton) Lusk of 18 Meadowbank, Ormiston.
Died of Wounds on 14 April 1917 and buried in Ormiston Old Churchyard. (CWG)


GEORGE MALCOLM
George Malcolm – age 26 – Private (7288) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
In 1911 George was serving with the 2nd Cameron Highlanders in India. He landed at Le Havre with the 1st Battalion in August 1914.
Born 1888 in Ormiston as George Alexander Malcolm. Son of the late Rachel Washington (Bathgate) Malcolm (died 1895) and of Alexander Malcolm.
Killed in Action on 12 January 1915 and buried in Brown's Road Military Cemetery, Festubert, France.
Also named on the Pencaitland War Memorial.


ROBERT MANNERS
Robert Manners – age 24 – Private (1712) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Robert was employed at the Ormiston Colliery when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed during the battle at Loos.
Born 1891 in Edinburgh. Son of Robert and Catherine (Denham) Manners of 2 Beaumont Place, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

James Scott Moggie – age 26 – Lance Corporal (330116) 1/8th Battalion. Royal Scots.
James enlisted in August 1914 and as Private (4617) he landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November. He was wounded in May 1917.
Born 1892 in Borthwick, Midlothian. Son of the late John Moggie (died 1911) and Mary (Scott) Moggie of Tynemount Farm, Ormiston.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1918 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


ALEXANDER McCRAW
Alexander McCraw – age 19 – Private (353550) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Born 1898 in Tranent, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of William and Helen Fortune (Dods) McCraw of Tynemount, Ormiston and of Muirton Drem, East Lothian.
Died of Wounds on 23 November 1917 and buried in Orival Wood Cemetery, Flesquieres, France

William enlisted as Private (5030) in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry and was posted to the Royal Scots Greys.
Born 1898 in Portobello, Midlothian. Son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Fairgrieve) McCraw of 6 Wellington Street, Portobello.
Killed in Action on 28 November 1917 and buried in Anneux British Cemetery, France.


ALEXANDER McEWAN
Alexander McEwan – age 23 – Private (5308) 5th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Born 1893 in Edinburgh as McEwen. Son of Alexander and Mary (Connor) McEwan of 27 Clark Buildings, Ormiston.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1916 and buried in Mailly Wood Cemetery, Mailly-Maillet, France.

DAVID STEELE McIVOR, M.M.
David Steele McIvor, Military Medal – age 29 – Corporal (18848) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
David was a private secretary living with his parents at George Street, Ormiston when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in January 1916 but he was killed on the Somme. He was awarded a M.M. for his bravery.
Born 1887 in Dreghorn, Ayrshire. Son of John and Margaret (Steele) McIvor of Oakhouse, Ormiston.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


GEORGE ROBERTSON
George Robertson – age 31 – Private (12443) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
George was a coal miner living at Bathgate Buildings, Ormiston when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with the 12th Royal Scots in France in May 1915 but due to illness he was evacuated to the Bagthorpe Military Hospital in Nottinghamshire in January 1916. George was posted to the 13th Royal Scots in July 1916.
Born 1884 in Ormiston. Son of the late Robert Robertson (died 1912) and of Janet (Robertson) Robertson (died 1906). His next of kin was his brother James of Bathgate Buildings, Ormiston.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


PETER SMITH
Peter Smith – age 26 – Private (325494) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Peter joined his battalion in France as Private (1684) in October 1915. He died in the 47 Casualty Clearing Station at Vlamertinghe
Born 1891 in Humbie, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Francis and Jane or Jessie (McCormack) Smith.
Died of Wounds on 29 July 1917 and buried in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Wm. DONALDSON SMITH
William Smith – age 30 – Private (143410) Royal Air Force.
William was a coal miner when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed as Private (5224) with the 10th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders at Boulogne in July 1915. At some point he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and he was discharged from the RAF in February 1919. William died in the Edinburgh War Hospital at Bangour of post operative heart failure on a Gun Shot Wound. (Registered at Ecclesmachar, Linlithgowshire)
Born 1890 in Elphinston, Tranent, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of John and Marian (Kerr) Smith of Orchard House, Pencaitland and of Broomrigg, Pencaitland, Ormiston.
Died of Wounds on 31 July 1920 and buried in Ormiston Old Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Pencaitland War Memorial and on the Elphinstone Village War Memorial.


ROBERT SPENCE
Robert Spence – age 37 – Company Sergeant Major (6324) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
In 1891 Robert, aged 15, was a coal miner living with his family at George Street, Ormiston. He served in the South African War and in 1911 he was a Sergeant with the 2nd Gordons in India. They were in Cairo at the outbreak of war and landed at Zeebrugge in October 1914. Robert was killed three weeks later.
Born 1876 in Whittinghame, Haddingtomshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Helen (Ross) Spence (died 1905) and of David Spence of Ormiston. Husband of Jessie (Ross) Spence of Main Street, Thornhill, Stirlingshire who he married in 1906 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 31 October 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


ALEXANDER STEWART
Alexander Stewart – age 24 – Private (355821) 1/9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Alexander was a coal miner when he enlisted as Private (1534) in the Royal Scots. He was posted to the HLI in France.
Born 1885 in Pencaitland, Haddingtomshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Janet (Maxwell) Stewart (died 1910 in Ormiston and of Duncan Stewart. Husband of Margaret (Robertson) Stewart of 14 Meadow Bank, Ormiston who he married in 1914 in Pencaitland.
Killed in Action on 29 September 1918 and buried in Targelle Ravine British Cemetery, Villers-Guislain, France.

RAMSAY VICKERS
Thought to be:
Ramsay Vickers – age 25 – Lance Corporal (S/12179) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Ramsay had been a police constable at Dalkeith and at Cramond before enlisting. He joined his battalion in France in October 1915.
Born 1891 in West Calder, Midlothian as Ramsay Carden Vickers. Son of Ramsay and Agnes (Stevenson) Vickers. Husband of Mary (Ballantyne) Vickers who he married in 1913 in Penicuik, Midlothian.
Missing in Action on 18 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Penicuik War Memorial, on the Midlothian Constabulary memorial in Dalkeith and on the West Calder Parish Church memorial.


RICHARD WALKINGSHAW
Richard Walkingshaw – age 20 – Gunner (104480) "D" Battery, 187th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery
Richard died in the 11th Casualty Clearing Station at Godewaersvelde.
Born 1896 in Newtongrange, Newbattle, Midlothian. Son of James Bee Walkingshaw and Susan Goldie (Lowrie) Walkingshaw of Co-operative Buildings, Ormiston.
Died of Wounds on 11 August 1917 and buried in Godewaersvelde British Cemetery, France.


WILLIAM WIGHAM
Possibly:
William Wigham – age 21 – Private (17365) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was employed by an iron merchant when he enlisted in December 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1894 in Kinning Park, Glasgow. Son of Francis and Jessie (Kemp) Wigham of 63 Burnbank Street, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Coatbridge War Memorial.


ROBERT WISE
Robert Wise – age 26 – Private (325255) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert was a coal miner when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre as Private (1128) in November 1914.
Born 1891 in Ormiston. Son of Neil and Janet (Gordon) Wise of Maryfield and of 5 Hopetown Terrace, Ormiston.
Killed in Action on 21 July 1918 and buried in Marfaux British Cemetery, France.

1939 - 1945


HUGH ARMSTRONG
Hugh Bernard Armstrong – age 32 – Corporal (14530734) Royal Engineers.
Hugh had been a bricklayer. He died of cancer in the Eastern General Hospital, Leith.
Born 1914 in Lasswade, Midlothian. Son of the late Euphemia Hood (Bernard) Armstrong (died 1944) and of David Murie of Ormiston. Husband of Christina (Fairgrieve) Armstrong of Brewery Cottage, Ormiston who he married in 1937 in Pencaitland.
Died on Service on 16 September 1946 and buried in Ormiston Cemetery. (CWG)


WILLIAM BLACK
William Cowie Lyell Black – age 29 – Lance Corporal (3061613) 1st Battalion, Tyneside Scottish, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders).
The battalion had landed at Normandy on 13 June 1944 as part of the 49th Division. The 49th's first major action as a division came during the first British attempt to capture Caen. The operation commenced on 25 June, and the division, supported by elements of the 8th Armoured Brigade and a massive artillery barrage from over 250 guns, initially went well, with the first phase objective, the town of Fontenay, being captured by the end of the first day against units of two German panzer divisions (the 2nd and 9th). However for the next few days they had to ensure a series of very fierce counterattacks, with the 1st Battalion, Tyneside Scottish and 11th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry bearing the brunt of the German attacks. William was killed near Fontenay-le-Pesnal and was re-interred in July 1945.
Born 1915 in Ormiston. Son of the late William Cowie Black and Margaret (Gordon) Black of 16 Meadowbank, Ormiston. Husband of Jessie Forrest (Veitch) Black of Lammermoor Terrace, Tranent, East Lothian who he married in 1941 in Tranent.
Killed in Action on 1 July 1944 and buried in St. Manvieu War Cemetery, Cheux, France.
