South & Levern Parish Church, 146 Main Street, Barrhead, G78 1SG

This Church of Scotland is located in Barrhead Main Street, a short distance west of the shopping centre and the junction with Arthurlie Street. In 1985 Barrhead South joined with Levern Church to form Barrhead South & Levern Parish Church.

There are five war memorials located in the main entrance of the church.



The centre plaque which belonged to the South Church and details the WW1 dead.
The plaque is inscribed as follows:

He was the Husband of Margaret Earl Auchincloss Adair of Weir Ave Barrhead East Renfrewshire :
During 1910 The family where at 10 Barnes street ;- Father William -Mother Catherine, Brother James age 14, William 12, Margaret Connell age 10. John age 1 .William died after 2 years service and he is commemorated at Fontaine-au-Bois Communal Cemetery
Fontaine-au-Bois, Departement du Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France and on the family stone in Neilston Cemetery.

Comments- Son Of Mr and Mr James Anderson 245 Main street Barrhead; The war -Another Barrhead soldier killed ;
Mr James Anderson 245 Main street Barrhead has received a letter from an officer intimating that his son Pte Thomas Anderson 2nd Gordon's was killed in action in the trenches near Festubert on Nov 26th 1915; Pte Anderson was 23 years of age, and enlisted in May of the present year (1915) When he joined the army he was in employment of Bathgate Co-operative Society, and prior to that was with the west Calder co-op society having gone there from the Barrhead society in whose fleshing dept he had been employed for a number of years, three brothers of the deceased are in the Army, In letter to Mr Anderson already referred to , Lieutenant Terris says “private Anderson was killed by a rifle bullet through the head, death being instantaneous," He adds- " It will be some comfort to you to know that he suffered absolutely no pain. He died a hero's death. He was one of my best men, and his loss will be felt very much by myself and his platoon. He was buried behind the front line, and I have had a wooden cross placed over his grave. Allow me to sympathise with you in your irreparable loss"

He was 29 years of age and had been in France since April 1915;
Roderick is commemorated at Longuenesse Souvenir Cemetery: Saint-Omer, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France Plot: V. C. 37
Brother Alex was killed in action 31st Oct 1916.

Word has been received that Corp David Campbell, New Zealand infantry, Second son of Mr a Mrs Campbell, Auckland, And late of Victoria place Barrhead was killed on the 15th Sept, Corp Campbell was a Lithographic printer to trade and joined the forces shortly after the outbreak of the war, He was for a time in Egypt and afterword transferred to France. An elder Brother who was in the Flying corps was reported missing in Mesopotamia fully six months, so far no futher report of him has been receievd.
Additional Information:Son of Mr. and Mrs. Neil Campbell, of Waimane Avenue, Northcote, Auckland.
David is Commemorated on Panel Reference: Memorial: CATERPILLAR VALLEY (NEW ZEALAND) MEMORIAL

Intimation has been received by Mrs Campbell Dovecothall street that her son Pte Edward Campbell of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders has been missing since the 23rd April Pte Campbell is 21years of age. An elder Brother Private J Young Campbell of the Gordon Highlanders was killed in December 1914.
Brother Edward was in-fact a prisoner of war; Father Mr Hugh Campbell 113 John st Glasgow received medals etc of his Son John who had 9 years - 95 days service.
John is commemorated on Panel 38 of the Ypres Memorial
Sergeant John Campbell is not listed on Cowan Park Memorial

David Died on the same Date as Sergeant James R Monaghan of Nitshill- Quite a series of parallels had marked the careers of these two young men. The where both employed in the same department of Messers J.P. Coats Ltd, Glasgow, They both joined the Glasgow Highlanders as privates in Sept 1914, Went to France together in November 1914, Were promoted by the same steps, And completed the tail by dying together in their execution of duty.
Sergeant Monaghan and Carmichael were both connected with the South U.F Church Barrhead- Two other brothers of David's were serving with the colours.
David is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial Thiepval, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France Plot: Pier and Face 15 C.

Duncan was a former employee of Messers Saunders and Connor.
In loving memory of our dear son , Private Duncan Chisholm Scots Guards who was killed in action at Ypres on 191th April 1915
May the heavenly wind blow softly O'er that hallowed spot, Though the sea divides his grave from us -he will never be forgot:
