Evening Times reported Robert Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 1st 6th Battalion as killed in action on the 7th Aug 1915 in the 14th August paper issue on page 3 Then 13th Aug Gave him of Highland Cyclists Page 3 with photo :
Barrhead news- Deaths In loving memory of Pte Robert Richie A&SH (Cyclist section ) who was killed in Action 7th Aug 1915 age 19 years ;- Died in the pride of his youth and his glory, Far from his home and the land of his birth, none near to mourn him, save willows that are weeping, Mantling the place where a hero lies sleeping. Inserted by his chums:
The son of William and Jeanie Richie 11 Stewart Street Barrhead Father- Mother- Sister and Brother at Stewart Street.
More Barrhead Killed Intimation has been received by Mr and Mrs Ritchie, 11 Stewart Street Barrhead, Of the death in France of their eldest Son Private Robert Ritchie, of the 51st Cyclist Company. Pte Richie was only 19 years of age, but he was unusually well developed, standing over six feet in height and weighing over 13 stone. He was a member of the local territorial company of the A.&S Hrs when the war begun, and was at once mobilised and proceeded to Bedford, From thence he went to France and was transferred to the 51st Cyclist Company of the Highland division. He was a quiet, steady young man, and much sympathy will be felt for his parents. Prior to enlisting he was employed in the Giffonck pits.
Writing to Mrs Richie an officer of the company (Lieut. Alex P. Taylor) says:- “ It is with the sincerest regret that I announce the sad news of your Son’s death, Which occurred in the trenches here this morning about fife o’clock. he was doing his turn of duty as sentry in one of the traverses when he was hit on the forehead with a sniper’s bullet. He died almost instantaneously.I was in a dugout just a few yards away and his corporal came to me at once, But by the time I ran the few yards away he was dead. It will be a consolation to you to know he could not have suffered no pain, As he uttered no sound. He has died a true Soldier’s death, doing his duty for King and country- The most glorious death of all. We feel his loss very much, as he was one of our best men, quiet and reserved , but ever ready and willing to perform any task asked of him. Some of his comrades broke down altogether on hearing the news, and a general feeling of sadness prevails us all. to you I extend on behalf of the officers and men of the 51st Cyclist company our sincerest sympathy and deep regret. he is buried in a pretty little cemetery in a valley just behind the lines.I am unable to communicate the name of it at present, But it will be made known to you later.” A younger brother is at present training with the 3rd 6th A&SH . it might be of interest to add that at the time of intimation of Private Richie’s death was received by his parents they had visiting them Serg John Lochhead of the 13th Batt Australian imperial forces, the body which at such tremendous cost distinguished itself at the first forcing of a landing in the Dardanelles. Serg Lochhead is a native of Glasgow, but has been in the colony since his boyhood and is a cousin of Mrs Lochead. He passed through the first terrible phase of the Gallipoli landing]unscathed, and saw a month of the fight waged by the Allies to secure a grip on Turkish territory, But in a later stage he was wounded in no less than 13 places. he had been in a English hospital, and was in Scotland on a fortnight’s leave. But reports himself to London again this week. Aug 20th 1915 shawlands Advertiser;
Robert is commemorated at Peronne Road Cemetery Maricourt
Departement de la Somme Picardie, France Plot: I. F. 37. And on the South and levern Church Barrhead.

Battles Of Arras - First Battle Of The Scarpe - 09/04/1917
Location: 9th (Scottish) Division Memorial, Point du Jour. Allied victory, part of a large Allied offensive to break through German front lines and attack reserves of troops and materials. British advance before dawn and through inclement (sleet, snow, strong winds) weather.
The primary objective on the first day of the offensive was the Observation Ridge north of the Cambrai ??Arras road. Secondary objectives were the village of Feuchy plus the German second and third trench lines.
South of the road, a trench known as the Monchyriegel was the main objective but Devil's Wood, Tilloy-des-Mofflaines and the Bois-de-Boeufs had to be taken first. The Monchyriegel ran between Wancourt and Feuchy and was an important supply route and key element of the German trench system in the area.
Germans taken by surprise and by the end of 10th April all of the objectives had been taken except the Monchyriegel and trenches around the fortified village of Neuville-Vitasse. On the north bank of the River Scarpe, 9th (Scottish) Division on the right of XVII Corps attack, had as their the objectives the German third line defences, from the Point du Jour to the north bank of the River Scarpe - moving through to fourth line defences at the eastern edge of Athies.
All three brigades were in the line, 27th Brigade on the left, 12th Royal Scots and 6th King's Own Scottish Borderers the lead battalions, South African Brigade in the centre, 3rd South African Infantry and 4th South African Infantry the lead battalions and 26th Brigade on the right, 7th Seaforth Highlanders and 8th Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) the lead battalions. All the battalions secured the initial objective, the Black Line without any real difficulties, only 7th Seaforth Highlanders meeting any serious resistance, first at the Island near Blagny and then whilst clearing the village of Athies.
Moving through to the Blue Line, the line of the Arras-Lens Railway, a few more pockets of resistance were encountered, the Divisional Artillery assisting 26th Brigade to clear the Railway Triangle and 27th Brigade coming under machine-gun fire from the Railway and Maison Blanche Wood. 5th Cameron Highlanders and 10th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders moving through in 26th Brigade, 1st South African Regiment and 2nd South South African Regiment moved through for South African Brigade as the Division advanced to the Brown Line, from Athies to the Point du Jour.
Which was secured without resistance as the Germans fell away in full retreat in front of them, 9th Division passing through to attack the Green Line. Passing through 4th Division, 27th Brigade and South African Brigade attempted to continue the attack towards Roeux on 12th April, with little success but heavy casualties.
