Mrs (Janet) McQuarrie 8 Blackwood st Barrhead has recently received word that her son Pte Andrew McQuarrie Scottish Horse had been seriously wounded and this has been followed by an intimation on his death Pte MacQuarry enlisted in Sept 1915 and went to the Dardanelles at the end of 1915 Prior to war he was employed by the Gateside Waterproofing Company.
James McIlwraith & Sons, the Fereneze Works and Thomson' Waterproofing Co. Ltd.
In 1870, the old Gateside Cotton Spinning Mill was taken over by James McIlwraith & Sons from Govan for the manufacture of Morocco Leathers. An employee Thomas Thomson rose through the ranks to become manager and eventually bought the works when James McIlwraith died. He changed the name of the work to the Fereneze Works, which was home to Thomson's Waterproofing Co. Ltd. The company prospered producing waterproof material, which was in high demand during the South African War and again in World War I and II as it was used for tenting and camouflage. Another product which helped the company grow, was a wall decoration material named Alhambrine. It was given this name as it was used to decorate the interior of the Alhambra Theatre in the 1900s. It was also used for train interiors including the royal train used at the Delhi Durbar in 1911. In more modern times, the company diversified into rubber technology and fibreglass production. See Portal to the Past East Renfrewshire Library for further information on Local employers during WW1.

Levern Mill, Barrhead
The first cotton mill in Renfrewshire was the Levern Mill on Main Street, Barrhead, built opposite the Dovecothall Mill of 1780. A firm called Ramsay, Livingston & Love, managed by Mr Jonathan Heugh, built the new premises, which were required to house the sophisticated machinery being introduced into the industry. The mill ran on waterpower at first but when it was taken over by the Dunlops, steam power was introduced. The Dunlops owned the mill for nearly sixty years until the Stewarts took over.
At one time the Levern Mill employed over one thousand people, many of them children, who were the main source of labour in the early days of the mill, recruited from the local poorhouses. In the early nineteenth century laws were passed to protect child workers and it was decided that children had to attend school part time. The mill owners set aside a building in the complex for the teaching of the 'half timers'.
The Levern Mill stood as a ruin until c.1970 when it was declared unsafe and demolished to become part of the Levern walkway in Barrhead
William is commemorated at Arras Memorial Plot: Bay 6.Arras, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, Both of the Stewart brothers are also commented on the South and levern Parish church WW1 war memorial plaques...
