The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald database has an entry for Thomas on 21 April 1916 showing he was the son of T, of Australia late of Ardrossan

The 1901 Scottish census has an entry for a Wallace family at Holmenkollen Private House, South Beach Raod, West Kilbride, Old Ardrossan - father Thomas, widower; son Thomas age 13; daughters Margaret and Mary Milligan. The family were all born in Ardrossan

The record of soldiers effects shows Thomas' war gratuity paid to his sister Margaret at his fathers request.

Tom is also on the Ardrossan Academy memorial

Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald 11 February 1916

"Private Charles Smith, C Company, 6th R.S.F., son-in-law of Mrs Burns, 2 Kilmahew Street, Ardrossan, has been reported missing since 26th September 1915. Private Smith was formerly employed at Ardrossan Harbour. Mrs Burns will be glad to receive information regarding Private Smith"

Found Mrs Burns on the 1911 census at 3 Glasgow Street, Ardrossan and her granddaughter Mary Smith was living with her, aged 5. Mary's birth record shows her parents as Charles Smith and Elizabeth Burns married 7th January 1906 in Glasgow. The marriage record shows Charles, aged 25 and Elizabeth, aged 20, married at St Francis Church, Glasgow. Elizabeth is on the 1911 census at 5 Harbour Street, Ardrossan but cannot at the moment find Charles. There are various Charles Smith in the R S F. two of whom died on 26 September 1915. The most likely one to be the Charles on the memorial is service number 16125, 6th Bn, but shown as a L/CPL and living in Dysart. There is an article in the Edinburgh Evening News on 12 November 1915 saying he was wounded and missing since 25th Septebmer and wife resided at Shore Road, Dysart.
