The CWGC has the spelling of Charles name different from that shown in the memorial or the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald war database which has the name as "Tumulty"

ARDROSSAN

PRIVATE JOHN MCLEAN, H.L.I.
(Killed)

Private John McLean, H.L.I., who has been killed in action at the Persian Gulf, was the eldest son of Mr McLean, joiner, Ardrossan. He joined the forces on 21st February last year, and left for the front in August last. Private McLean was at one time engaged at Saltcoats station (G. and S.W. Rly.) and later acted as clerk at Rothesay, Largs and Troon. At the latter station he was booking clerk for nine years prior to enlisting. He was well known locally as well as at Troon, and sympathy is extended to the family in their bereavement. Our Troon correspondent writes: “Johnny” McLean, as he was familiarly termed by those who had the pleasure of his acquaintance, was transferred to Troon passenger station in 1907, where for a time he was engaged as parcels clerk, but latterly was promoted to the booking office. In both capacities he was a faithful and diligent worker, and he was a most popular member of the staff. He was held in the highest esteem by the travelling public, his winning manner, his obliging demeanour, and his cheerful good nature endearing him to all in a very special degree

Second-Lieutenant George Arthur Stevenson, 2nd East Yorkshire Regiment, who has died of his wounds in the Base Hospital at Boulogne, was the son of the late Mr Stevenson, Collector of Customs and Excise, Inverness, and his mother is now resident in England. He was a promising young man, and his death is much regretted in Inverness"

The Daily Gazette for Middlesbrough on 15 December 1914 has an obituary for George's father William which details his career in H M Customs and Excise and shows that from 1897 to 1902 William was the Collector for H M Customs in Ardrossan

George is also on the Ardrossan Academy memorial.
