Maxwell Mearns Castle Parish Church, Waterfoot Road, Newton Mearns, G77 5RE

UKNIWM: Not Listed
OS Grid Ref: NS 552553

The roots of this church go back to 1864 when the original Maxwell Church was founded. Located in Pollok Street on the south side of Glasgow, it had to be closed in 1970 to make way for the Kingston Bridge, part of the M8 motorway crossing the river Clyde.
The congregation were “transported” to Newton Mearns where services in the Castle began in June 1970. www.maxwellmearns.org.uk

The original Maxwell Church in Pollock Street, Glasgow

There were two war memorial plaques and one large memorial stained glass window in the original church. During demolition of the old church and the building of the new church these items were put in storage. Unfortunately the WW1 plaque and the stained glass window were “lost”. The only records of these items are black and white photographs that exist in a booklet called “The Maxwell Story”. I have permission to reproduce them here.

The WW1 tablet is inscribed as follows:

1914 – 1919

TO THE GLORY OF GOD
AND TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF MAXWELL
