I know lists can sometimes get a bit much, but should we have one to link up all the identical memorials around Scotland?

I see this was touched upon a few years ago before we had the Sculptors thread, but I just wondered if anyone else would be interested in linking up all these clones in a thread out of pure curiosity?

DB

That would be a good idea. Several big monumental masons produced similar memorials for all over the country. Jim McGinlay is the man to get involved because he has traced a lot of the firms.

Thanks

Adam

Good idea.
Here's my starter for 10: all seem to use the same type figure

Latheron War Memorial, Caithness
Liddesdale War Memorial
Kirriemuir
Assynt War Memorial, Lochinver, Sutherland
Kincardine and Croick War Memorial, Ardgay
Prescott, Lancashire - unveiled on 9th September 1916!
Ripponden War Memorial
Saltcoats
Ferniegair, Lanarkshire

Marnoch in Aberdeenshire and Murroes in Angus. [Mod Edit Adam] Added Tobermory, Mull. Note that as each memorial has a longer list of names the design changes slightly.

Govan, Newton Mearns and Island of Cumbrae memorials are all very similar with the projected heads and castellated upper.

A mix of statues here. At first glance all very similar, but closer inspection reveals some differences.

It could be that Tarland, New Elgin, Tough, Ballachulish and Portsoy are all by Robert Warrack Morrison working for Stewart and Co. of Aberdeen, but looking at the hands, collare, hose, kilt covers and webbing and kit I have my doubts that they are all by the same man.

Scourie

Glenfinnan

Portsoy

Tarland

New Elgin

Ballachulish & Glencoe

Tough

Fort William

Lochmaben

Dumfries

Bonnyrigg

Newmilns in Ayrshire, Kirkconnel in Dumfries & Galloway, and Bellshill in Lanarkshire. A similar Highlander in Holytown just a few miles from Bellshill. All are by Messrs. Scott Rae of Glasgow.

Penpont and Kilmaurs. Thanks to Jim McGinlay for pointing out they are both by William Kellock Brown

The same man is responsible for Inverary, Johnstone and Largs. Same Highlander. One Stone, two bronze.

Largs

To add to Marnoch, Murroes and Tobermory can be Tingwall on Shetland, Lochgelly and (kind of) Lunasting also on Shetland.

Tingwall

Lochgelly

Lunasting

Tingwall is near identical to the previous three whereas Lunasting has a cross instead of the lion rampant and doesn't have the twin pinaccles at the top. Neither does it have the cross indented relief above the list of names. It still has the same base and general finishing and shape as the others.
