A little more on Gilbert Galloway from the Wigtownshire Free Post 26/11/1942. "Mrs A Dixon, Monreith Home Farm, Port William, has been notified that her second son, Gilbert Galloway, has been killed in action in Libya. He was educated at Port William and Whithorn schools, and served his apprenticeship to the Scotch trade in London. He had just started in business for himself when war broke out. Almost immediately he joined up and was posted to the Duke of Wellington's Regiment, but was later transferred to a Scottish regiment in the 51st Division. He was a lad of bright personality and very poular among his friends in Port William. He was an enthusiatic member of the London Galloway Association and seldom missed a meeting. He was married only last December, and much sympathy is felt for his young widow, his mother, and the other members of his family in their bereavement. |

Brilliant Mike - I did wonder about a London connection for this man and now I know
He is on the Mochrum Parish War Memorial in Port William as:

Gilbert McMillan Galloway age 26 Private (4620991) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Formerly of 2nd/7th Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding)
Educated at the Douglas Ewart High School in Newton Stewart.
Born 1916 in Kirkinner. Son of the late John Galloway and of Jane Mary (McMillan) Dixon (formerly Galloway) of Monreith Home Farm, Port William.
Husband of Violet Emily (Gray) Galloway of Thornhill, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1941 in Edmonton, London.
Killed in Action on 2 November 1942 and buried in El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.
I'll add the details to my notes.
