I was told today that one Lewis casualty was listed as "Canadians" whereas in fact he was "Camerons". The descendant wants to have it corrected. Can anyone advise how to proceed?

Well this is a bigger topic than you might think. I suggest you start with the War Memorials Trust Factsheets http://www.warmemorials.org/faqs/ and I would suggest the one on addition of names as much of this will apply. Of course you will need to prove that the man you have never was in the Canadians and there is no man with the same name who did (who could be commemorated).

The only people who can change a memorial are the owners (or custodians) of the memorial and the local council (where they are not custodians). Note that the council are empowered to make changes but are not required to do so.

The War Memorials Trust can give more specific detailed advice.

Good luck.

The "alleged" error was spotted on the North Lewis (Borve) war memorial. I copy the relevant part of the email that alerted me - I have to say that this sounds quite plausible.

Quote:
My two great uncles Malcolm and Murdo Morrison, 10 Borve are both on the Borve war memorial.

I see that the memorial has Malcolm Morrison as serving with a Canadian Regiment.

I believe that this would be a mistake and he would have served with 1st Batallion Cameron Highlanders and had the service number 3/5254 as per the reference in the commonwelath war graves web site. This is also backed up in that the additional information on the website states he is the son of Angus and Effie Morrison, 10 Borve.

The date of his death is correct (28/04/1916)whilst the M. Morrison serving with the Canadians has a date of death of 28/09/1916.

Having checked Canadian enlitment papers for the M. Morrison serving with the Canadians online using the service number provided I also note that the religion given was Roman Catholic which relatives say would not have been the case.

I have taken note of the considerations from the WMT, and will bear those in mind before proceeding further, if proceeding further turns out to be appropriate.

Well that has me convinced. Unfortunately there is no service record on Ancestry but his entry in SDGW shows birthplace of Barvas, Stornoway and confirms the April date of death. His MIC also confirms the date of death. Both show him as Cameron Highlanders with no mention of another Regiment.

Good luck
