Not listed on UKNIWM
Located in the corridor of Dalbeattie Primary School at OS Map Ref NX 835 614. The current Dalbeattie Primary school was formerly Dalbeattie High school so the memorial is in its original location. (Edit - now in Dalbeattie Museum (August 2011) - OS Map Ref NX 834 611).

My thanks to the Head Teacher, Mrs Ingham, for allowing me to photograph this memorial and to Mr Bremner of Dalbeattie High school for his efforts and information.

Dalbeattie Civic Memorial is only 100 metres or so from the school.

JAMES and WILLIAM PROUDFOOT
I'm now quite sure that these are brothers - the odd thing is that only William appears on any Civic Memorial in D&G.

The 1901 census shows William and Elizabeth at Hurlford, Ayrshire with their children Arthur, James, William, Elizabeth (all born at Maxwelltown), Robert, George and Maggie (all born at Dalbeattie between 1894 and 1900).
The D&G Standard 27/9/1916 page 3a reports the death of William, grandson of William Proudfoot of Mill Brae, Maxwelltown, and that his brothers Robert (a POW) and James were also in the RSF, brother George in the Black Watch.

James Proudfoot, Private (16616) "D" Co. 6/7th Bn. Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Age 28. Son of the the late Mrs. Elizabeth Proudfoot. Died 23/4/1917.
Born Maxwelltown (SNWM)

William Proudfoot, Private (20491) 2nd Bn. Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Died 1/7/1916. Born Maxwelltown (SNWM)

William Proudfoot is listed in the Stewartry Roll of Honour but not James. The current Head Teacher at Castle Douglas High is Ian Proudfoot - wonder if he is related?

I originally thought that the memorial in Dalbeattie Primary school and the one for Dalbeattie High school were separate memorials but I now know they are one and the same so I have edited earlier posts on this thread to reflect this information.

The current Dalbeattie High School is in the centre of Dalbeattie at OS Map Ref NX 829 611.

Initial evidence for the existance of this memorial is from the following newspaper article from the Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser of 4th June 1915.

Following building work at the school, the memorial has now been moved into Dalbeattie Museum. It is in a prominent position but in a narrow space so although it can easily be seen, it is now difficult to photograph.

The folder to the right of it contains research notes on many of those listed and it is great to see this information adjacent to a memorial. The curator is very proud of his acquisition and believes that it gets more attention and visitors than it did in the school.

My thanks to Ken Morrison for the information which led me to visit the museum.
