There is certainly no John Wood RAMC listed for WW2 on CWGC.

He is also listed on the Durisdeer WW2 ROH of course.

I suspect it may be this man:
Name: WOOD, JOHN
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lance Corporal
Regiment/Service: King's Own Scottish Borderers
Unit Text: 1st Bn.
Age: 24
Date of Death: 22/10/1944
Service No: 3189456
Additional information: Son of Mrs. G. Wood, of Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 21. A. 4.
Cemetery: JONKERBOS WAR CEMETERY

I have come across a couple of examples where someone was listed as RAMC when he was a medic in an infantry Regiment. This man is the closest geographically to Durisdeer. Significantly, he is NOT listed on the Castle Douglas memorial.

Nothing further to add from SNWM or the UK Army Roll of Honour for 1939-1945 so I guess the next step would be to search for a death report for the above man in the local papers to try and prove a connection.

If it is not this man, could it be a non-comm?

\Paul

Teddy
Although not impossible, it is unlikely this man is a non comm.
As Paul states often the detail on a war memorial can be inaccurate, and where more than one local " roll " exists the error can be replicated. It is quite possible your man did not die of war related causes after being discharged.

The link to 3189456 Wood and Durrisdeer cannot be assumed from the NOK details at Castle Douglas. The casualty might never have been there. Local papers may give a clue.

Gladys
WILLIAM H CARSON (51766) his CWG stone shows 3rd Battalion WYR
This was reserve a battalion based at Whitly Bay as part of Tyne Garrison

FreeBMD shows William H Carson age 29 death registered at Tynemouth Oct-Dec quarter 1918.
That would give a DoB of 1889 and scotlandspeople has a birth for William H Carson registered in Kirkcudbrightshire.
