Iona - Argyll & Bute, Island of Mull District

The Iona war memorial. A grey granit celtic cross which stands on Martyr's Bay, a beach were monks from the abbey were slaughtered in a Viking raid.
This particular memorial provides a wealth of information on the men listed.


The front pedestal lists the WWI dead


with the dedication at the base


and the two sides of the pedestal bear the names of the WWII dead

Not wishing to be pedantic but I think the transcription of WW2 Colin McDonald needs a wee tweak.

As I understand it Bimbashi is an Egyptian rank equivalent to Major and I think DFC FCS refers to him being with the Sudan Defence[DFC] Forces[FCS] rather than having the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Only noticed as may be heading over that way in a month or so.
