LIEUTENANT DONALD HALLIDAY MACARTNEY, CANADIANS.
The Macartney family had strong links with the Rerrick area and the family grave is in Dundrennan Abbey burial ground.
Donald Halliday Macartney – age 30 – Lieutenant, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.
Donald was a rancher in Saskatchewan when enlisted as Private (802) in Ottawa in August 1914. He sailed with his battalion from Canada in October and landed in France in December1914. He served at Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, Passchendaele, Cambrai, and Arras. He was wounded in at St. Eloi in March 1915 and was evacuated to hospital in Dublin. During his recovery he was selected for officer training and was commissioned in January 1917. He rejoined the PPCLI in July but was wounded and gassed at Passchendaele in November and was treated at the Red Cross Hospital in Rouen before being evacuated to England. He rejoined his unit on 29 July 1918 but was killed a month later at Mouchy-le-Preux near Arras.
Born 1888 in Marylebone, London. Son of the late Sir Halliday Macartney, K.C.M.G. and late Lady Jeanne (du Sautoy) Macartney of 3 Harley Place, London. Brother of Kenneth Halliday Macartney of 370 Wiley Street, Port Arthur, Ontario.
Killed in Action on 26 August 1918 and buried in Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery, Haucourt, France.


PRIVATE GEORGE McBRIDE, K.O.S.B.
George McBride – age 20 – Private (1837) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George enlisted in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was killed during the battle at Achi Baba.
Born 1895 in Auchencairn, Rerrick. Son of George Kinnell McBride and of Agnes (McWilliam) McBride of Front Street, Auchencairn.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PRIVATE ROBERT McGEORGE, CAMERONS.
Robert James McGeorge – age 21 – Private (S/21629) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Robert enlisted in November 1915.
Born 1896 in Auchencairn, Rerrick. Son of Mary Ann McGeorge.
Adopted son of grandparents James and Mary McGeorge of Seaside Farm, Auchencaim.
Killed in Action on 19 January 1917 and buried in Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont, Somme, France.

PRIVATE JOHN McMURRAY, SEAFORTHS.
Served as:
John McFaggen – age 30 – Lance Corporal (10634) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
John was serving with the 1st Seaforths at Agra in India as part of the Dehra Dun Brigade in the Meerut Division and in September 1914 they moved to France, landing at Marseilles on 12 October 1914. He was in action at La Bassee and Ypres and was killed at Neuve Chapelle.
Born 1885 in Anwoth, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Elizabeth McMurray. Grandson of the late John McMurray and of Nicholas (McFegan) McMurray of Nether Linkins, Auchencairn.
Missing in Action on 12 March 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.

PRIVATE NORMAN McMURRAY, K.O.S.B

Norman McMurray – age 28 – Lance Corporal (1636) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Norman was working at Dryburgh Farm, Clarebrand, Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1887 at Jordieland Farm, Tongland, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Isabella Murray. Grandson of the late John McMurray and of Nicholas (McFegan) McMurray of Nether Linkins, Auchencairn.
Killed in Action on 29 December 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Turkey.
Also named on the Crossmichael War Memorials and on the Roll of Honour in Crossmichael Parish Church.


PRIVATE JOHN MARSHALL, K.O.S.B.
John Marshall – age 38 – Private (23265) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had been a gamekeeper and was a rabbit trapper, living at Richardcairn, Auchencairn when he enlisted in March 1916. He married five days before he left for France.
Born 1878 in Rerrick Parish as John Gentle Marshall. Son of the late Gavin Rowatt Marshall of Orroland Lodge, Rerrick and of the late Helen Haining Marshall of Richardcairn, Auchencairn. Husband of Agnes (Sneddon) Marshall of Chapelton Drum, Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire who he married in July 1916 in St Giles, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 3 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. France.

PRIVATE WILLIAM MUIR, LANARK YMRY.
William's name was added to the CWGC's Debt of Honour Register on 13 March 2009. See post on page 1.
William Clint Muir – age 21 – Private (995) 2/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
William was a farm servant when he enlisted in December 1914. He contracted rheumatic fever in May 1915 while in training at Ashkirk Camp, Selkirk and spent some months in a military hospital before being discharged from the army on 16 August 1915. He returned home to recuperate but did not recover and he died in his home in Auchencairn Village.
Born 1894 in Rerrick Parish. Son of James and Margaret Hyslop (Brown) Muir of Auchencairn.
Died on 19 February 1916 and buried in Auchencairn Cemetery.


PRIVATE JAMES STEWART, M.G.C.
James Stewart – age 22 – Private (60958) 111th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
James returned from Canada to enlisted as Private (25463) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in July 1916. He was transferred to the MGC before he went to France where he served at Arras and Messines. He was killed when a shell hit his dug-out.
Born 1894 in Auchencairn, Rerrick. Son of James and Agnes (Ferguson) Stewart of The Hall, Auchencairn.
Missing in Action on 4 August 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

SERGEANT ROBERT STEWART, N.Z.F.A

Robert James Stewart – age 27 – Sergeant (2/1680) 6th (Howitzer) Battery, New Zealand Field Artillery.
Robert had served with Territorial 5th King's Own Scottish Borderers before he left to go to Canada. He was working as a farm labourer at Ohau, Manawatu in the North Island of New Zealand when he enlisted in April 1915. He sailed from Wellington in June and landed at Suez in Egypt. The battery served at Gallipoli before moving to France in March 1916. Robert was killed near the village of Romeries which was taken by the 1st Otago Regiment and the 2nd Canterbury Regiment on 23 October 1918.
Born 1891 in Auchencairn, Rerrick. Son of James and Agnes (Ferguson) Stewart of The Hall, Auchencairn.
Killed in Action on 24 October 1918 and buried in Vertigneul Churchyard, Romeries, Nord, France.

PRIVATE THOMAS TELFER, K.O.S.B.
Thomas Telfer – age 29 – Private (16477) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 Thomas was working as a carter in a sugar refinery in Greenock, Renfrewshire and he enlisted from there. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1885 in Auchencairn, Rerrick. Son of the late Robert Telfer and of Agnes (Faulds) Telfer of Auchencairn.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


PRIVATE ROBERT THOMSON, R.A.S.C.
Robert Thomson – age 36 – Driver (T3/027492) 8th Army Auxiliary Horse Transport Company, Royal Army Service Corps.
(The ASC received the Royal prefix in late 1918)
In 1911 Robert was a coachman at Crosby on Eden, Stanwix, Carlisle and was a coachman and chauffeur when he enlisted from there in November 1914. He landed at Le Havre in September 1915 and served throughout the war but suffered a fractured skull after being kicked by a horse. Robert died in the 55th Casualty Clearing Station at Charleroi.
Born 1882 in Auchencairn, Rerrick. Son of James and Jean or Jane (Good) Thomson of Auchincairn. Husband of Susan (Gillespie) Thomson of The Green, Scorton, Yorkshire who he married in 1908 at Chilten Moor, Houghton le Spring in County Durham.
Died on Service on 27 December 1918 and buried in Charleroi Communal Cemetery, Belgium.

1939 – 1945


L.A.C. H. DOUGLAS HAMILTON, R.A.F
.
Harold Douglas Hamilton – age 22 – Leading Aircraftman (626291) 45 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
Douglas worked for his step-father as a driver until he joined the RAF in November 1938. He went to the Middle-East in March 1940 and served as a driver in his squadron. He died of appendicitis and peritonitis in the 23rd General Hospital at Sarafand in Palestine.
Born 1918 in Rerrick Parish. Son of Margaret Hamilton Clark and step-son of George Alexander Clark who married in 1923 in Rerrick.
Died on Active Service on 19 July 1941 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.


SGT. PILOT FRANCIS J. McGAW, R.A.F.V.R.
Francis James McGaw – age 19 – Sergeant Pilot (1052301) 115 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Francis and his mother returned to Auchencairn, Kirkcudbrightshire from Burma after his father's death there in 1922. He was educated at Auchencairn School and Kirkcudbright Academy before he became an apprentice at the Bank of Scotland in Moffat in Dumfriesshire. He he joined the RAF and was trained to fly in Canada. His Wellington bomber had taken off from RAF Marham, Norfolk for a raid on Mannheim. On its return it was shot down by an enemy intruder and crashed near Martlesham Heath, Suffolk.
Born c.1922 in Burma.
Son of the late Thomas Craig McGaw and of Agnes (Docherty) McGaw of Auchencairn.
Killed in Action on 30 August 1941 and buried in Auchencairn Cemetery. (CWG)


PTE. THOMAS MILADY, K.O.S.B.
Thomas Milady – age 39 – Private (3184722) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
It was reported that Thomas died in hospital in Tripoli as the result of an accident.
Born 1904 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Thomas and Maria (Mulhearn) Milady. Husband of Janet Burgess (Sloan) of Bengairn Lodge, Auchencairn who he married in 1935 at Lower Etterickholm, St. Mungo, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire.
Died on Active Service on 27 October 1943 and buried in Tripoli War Cemetery, Libya.
Note: the KOSB did not serve in North Africa. It seems likely that, when he died, Thomas was enroute to join the 2nd Battalion, who were fighting in Burma.


GUNNER ROBERT H. PATTERSON, R.A.
Robert Hood Patterson – age 24 – Gunner (883054) 6 Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Born 1920 in Girthon, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Marion (Hood) Paterson and of Donald Cameron Patterson of Over Hazelfield, Dunrod Road, Auchencairn.
Robert was buried in Akyab War Cemetery in Arakan but was re-interred in Taukkyan in May 1952.
Killed in Action on 18 December 1944 and buried in Taukkyan War Cemetery, Mayanmar (Burma)
6 Medium Regiment were part of the Indian XV Corps which in late 1944 was responsible for operations in Burma's coastal Arakan Province while the 14th Army was making the main attack against the Japanese into Central Burma.
