Has anyone applied for any of the Guards Records previously. I wondered what the response was like, and do the service papers usually run to many pages? Thanks

In the mid 70s I worked in RHQ Scots Guards for a few years and had a hand in sending these out from time to time. Often only 5 or 6 pages, they could be 20 pages and more for a career soldier. I never took much interest in them at the time. I have no idea how it all works now though.

Mark

The Guards, being the Guards, retained their own records and consequently they survived the blitz unscathed. They have always sent me copies fairly promptly. As Paul states the number of papers in the file varies but gave most interesting detail of service, NOK, etc in the many cases I have been involved with.

I always understood they were probably not too enthusiastic about digging out and supplying records simply upon request.
In every request I have made I have enclosed some notes and asked that the money be used for the benefit of the regiment as the Archivist deems best.
I find £15-20 is a reasonable donation and have never had a problem.

If you want more details of the contacts, send me an e-mail.
