In the summer I won a local photography competition and was awarded the General Holden memorial trophy. This was instigated in 1996 by General Holden but local enquiries say it was done via a lady friend of his who lived locally, now deceased.

So who was (or is?) General Holden?

No idea, but well done for winning the competition. Since you are off-topic anyway can we see what you won it for?

Could it be Brig Gen Sir Capel Lofft Holden?

Re-read the first post - so 'No'; however, it could be a relation.

I wouldn't rule him out. Might have been a daughter who named it in his honour?

The subject of the photo was a celebration in the Glenkens

Found him

on a return trip to Dalry churchyard, I found his gravestone, don't know how I missed him before

Major General Sir John Reid Holden
CB OBE DSO
1913 - 1995

anyone know anything about him?

Just to set you a puzzle, did you notice the error in the above honours?

Numerous entries in London Gazette.
First in 1941 award of DSO for actions in the Middle East - Captain, Temp Major, (71215) John Reid Holden, Royal Armoured Corps (Royal Tank Regiment)
Last in 1975 relinquishing post as Hon. Col. Lowland Yeomanry, RAC, TAVR.
Listed as Major General John Reid Holden, CB, CBE, DSO.

interesting you found a reference to a CBE. If that were true then his gravestone should show CB, CBE, DSO

But if it is an OBE, the order should be CB, DSO, OBE so the inscription is wrong in either case.

OBE being class iv of the order of the empire ranks behind DSO

What a super photo, you could spend ages looking at it and always see something different, it encompasses what a great day it must have been.
