These two brothers are named on the various Glencairn Parish War Memorials in Dumfriesshire.

John Cassels Monteith – age 39 – Lieutenant Colonel, 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.
“Jack” was educated at Cargilfield School and at Fettes College in Edinburgh, and at Glasgow University where he graduated in 1897. He was studying for a LL.B. when he was commissioned in the Bedfordshire Regiment in May 1900 and he spent the next seven years in India. He returned to Glasgow University as Adjutant to the Officer Training Corps in January 1912 and re-joined his old regiment in August 1914, landing in France with the 1st Battalion. He fought at Mons, Le Cateau and Cambray before being wounded near Ypres in November. He was evacuated home and was appointed to the School of Instruction for Officers at Cambridge before he returned to France in August 1915. John was killed two months later commanding the 2nd Battalion near Hulloch during the battle of Loos.
Born 1875 in Glencairn. Son of the late Rev. John Monteith of Glencairn Parish Church (died 1886) and of Ellen Maria (Neve) Monteith (died 1912)
Husband of Jane Robertson (Wilson) Monteith of Glenluiart, Moniaive who he married in April 1914 in Airdrie, Old Monklands.
Killed in Action on 1 October 1915 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Cargilfield School and Fettes College memorials and on the Glasgow University Roll of Honour.

and his brother

William Neve Monteith
– age 37 – Lieutenant, 6th (Reserve) Battalion attached to the 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade.
William was educated at Cargilfield School and at Fettes College in Edinburgh, and at Magdalen College Oxford, where he gained his B.A., before studying Theology at the University of Glasgow from where he graduated B.D. in April 1904. After graduation he acted as assistant in the “Scotch” Church at Buenos Aires and then served as Assistant to the Reverend Dr Playfair of St. Andrews before getting his own parish in Elie in Fife in 1907. He enlisted in the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry at the outbreak of war and was commissioned in the Rifle Brigade in January 1915. He joined his battalion in France in May 1915 but was killed at Bois-Grenier during the battle of Loos.
Born 1878 in Glencairn. Son of the late Rev. John Monteith of Glencairn Parish Church (died 1886) and of Ellen Maria (Neve) Monteith (died 1912) Husband of Muriel May (Cox) Monteith of West House, Elie, Fife who he married in 1915 in Largo, Fife.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Cargilfield School and Fettes College memorials, on the Glasgow University Roll of Honour, on the Church of Scotland Ministers memorial in St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, on the Magdalen College memorial, on the Elie & Earlsferry War Memorial, on the Elie Parish Church memorial, on an individual memorial in the church, and on the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Iglesia Presbiteriana San Andrés) memorial in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Gallaway, John Henry, Private, Royal Army Service Corps.

Named on the Jedburgh War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

GALLAWAY, J. H. PTE. A. S. C.
John Henry Gallaway – age 39 – Private (M/282439) No. 1 Reserve Motor Transport Depot, Army Service Corps.
Just three weeks after passing a medical and joining the ASC, John died of pneumonia in the Abbey Lodge Auxiliary Military Hospital at Chislehurst in Kent.
Born 1878 in Caputh, Perthshire. Son of the late Alexander Gallaway (died 1900) and of Margaret (Stewart) Galloway, of Dirgarve, Aberfeldy. Husband of Agnes Lottie (Cochran) Gallaway of Mount Ulston, Jedburgh who he married in 1909 in Jedburgh.
Died on Service on 24 January 1917 and buried in Chislehurst Cemetery, Kent. (CWG)
Also named on the Weem and Killichassie War Memorial in Perthshire.

Boyd, James Wilson Brack, Captain, York & Lancaster Regiment

Named on the Melrose War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

CAPTAIN J.W.B. BOYD.
James Wilson Brack Boyd – age 46 – Captain, 3rd Battalion attached to the 2nd Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment.
James was educated at Cargilfield School and at Fettes College in Edinburgh before he began a career in estate management. In 1901 he was at Fyvie in Aberdeenshire but latterly he had spent seven years with Lord Allandale of Bretton Hall near Wakefield, Yorkshire, living in the Old Parsonage in West Bretton, and he gained a commission in the 3rd Y&L Regiment in September 1914. He landed in France in early 1915 but was wounded at Ypres in Belgium in April 1915 and evacuated home. After his recovery he was for some time in command of the Machine Gun School at Sunderland and had returned to his battalion as Captain in command of the 16th Trench Mortar Battery only few weeks before he was killed.
Born 1870 at Ormiston, Eckford, Roxburghshire as James Wilson Boyd. Son of the late Elizabeth Bell (Wilson) Boyd (died 1909) and of William Brack Boyd of Faldonside, Melrose (died 1918)
Died of Wounds on 16 July 1916 and buried in Brandhoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Cargilfield School and Fettes College War Memorials and on the West Bretton War Memorial in West Yorkshire.

Smith, Herbert Shaw, 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Scots

Named on the Selkirk War Memorial and on the Roll of Honour as:

SMITH, HERBERT S., 2ND LIEUTENANT, ROYAL SCOTS, 1916-17.
Herbert Shaw Smith – age 19 – Second Lieutenant 1/9th (Highlander) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Herbert had enlisted as Private (5329) in the Royal Scots and he was commissioned in October 1916. He spent a few months in Egypt before joining the 1/9th Royal Scots in France in January 1917.
Born 1897 in Edinburgh. Son of Patrick Smith (Sheriff Substitute of Selkirkshire) and of Alice (Paterson) Smith of The Firs, Selkirk.
Died of Wounds on 12 April 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
