Maurice Gillespie, Trooper, Scottish Horse is commemorated on the Persie & Glenshee War Memorial, Perthshire;

SCOTTISH HORSEMAN WOUNDED

Information has been received by Mrs Gillespie, Steppes Cottage, Bridge of Cally, that her son, Trooper Maurice Gillespie, of the 1st Scottish Horse, has been wounded. Before the outbreak of war Trooper Gillespie was for four years in the employment of the Highland Railway Company, and was a member of A Squadron of the 1st Scottish Horse, who volunteered to a man for active service. He has sustained a wound to the right arm from a shrapnel bullet.

Trooper Maurice Gillespie, of the Scottish Horse, died on Sunday morning. He had been ailing for some time, having contracted his illness while with his regiment in Gallipoli, where he was wounded and gassed. He was a handsomely built fellow, and was a general favourite with his school companions and comrades in his regiment. He was severely wounded in the arm.

Maurice died 4th March, 1917 at Steppes Cottage, Bridge of Cally - a private in the Scottish Horse - of phthisis pulmonaris. I have the DC.

Not an answer on whether he is a non-comm. or not but Trooper Gillespie is also listed on the Highland Railway Company War Memorial in Inverness.

I've never heard of gas being used at Gallipoli.

gas in the form of a weapon was not used at Gallipoli, but there are other explanations for the term being used (gas from explosives, cooking etc, even gas gangrene) http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t99240.html

His service record has survived and is on Ancestry.

that looks pretty conclusive to me

Great stuff. I hadn't checked the service records but I will have a look tomorrow when I'm back home. I think it was a good case but as you say I think this confirms.

Further to your PM earlier today, I will get the service file later to save e-mailing it round. If you send on the DC as requested I will look at it and check it is not already in the CWGC system. If not it looks like a good case for consideration.
Update
He is not in the system. If the DC confirms phthisis pulmonaris he is certain to be accepted by MOD.
Can you advise if you are aware of his place of burial?

Tpr. 3011 Maurice G Gillespie, 1st Scottish Horse has been forwarded as a case, on Mark's behalf, to CWGC / MOD as a non comm death due to service related causes. His details are now in the system.

I am making further enquiries regarding his place of burial.
Will update when further details available.

I've just read that the Turks did use a type of gas shell at Gallipoli. These were filled with a mix of phosphorus and calcium and when wet gave off an inflammable poisonous gas.

I have now established that Maurice is buried with his mother, and I believe his sister, at Jeanfield Cemetery , Perth and that the grave is not marked.
