From the Stewartry Roll of Honour:
Robert McDill. Enlisted February 1915 1st KOSB
Served in Gallipoli, Egypt and France.
Discharged May 1918 and died from the effect of wounds 8 December 1918.

The Death Register has:
Robert McDill Commercial Traveller (Discharged Soldier) Single
Cause of Death:
(a) Chronic suppurating shrapnel wound of leg.
(b) Influenza Pneumonia

He died at home at Glen of Spottes, Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire.

(The next entry in the Register is for William McClune who is also on the Haugh of Urr Memorial and on the Springholm Memorial; and on this latter thread Stewartry gives his details)

I can e-mail the Death Register details if needed.

Good grief, he'd been wounded some time before May 1918 when he was discharged and had suffered a Chronic suppurating shrapnel wound on his leg until December. Not a good way to go.

Ken

Thanks for the DC. I will check it out further. Proof positive is likely to be the problem here if a non comm.

Ken
It appears this may be a Pte Robert McDill who was discharged under KR 392/16 on 31st May 1918.

There may be scope for a case to MOD IF it can be proven your Robert is the same man and enough supporting evidence is obtained to confirm this.

I will send you a PM on this.

He is listed on both the Haugh of Urr memorial and also the Dalbeattie memorial. We don't have his grave on the SWGP yet as I did not come across it when I photographed Urr and Dalbeattie graveyards but I can always try and hunt for it specifically.

I have scanned the pages from the Stewartry Roll of Honour and await an email address to send them to.

To save you a trek - Robert McDill is buried in his family grave no. 113 at Balmaghie Churchyard. From the transcription there is no reference to his military service.

Hi Paul

E-mail sent a few minutes before your post. Thanks. ( Your reply arrived as I write)
Ken advises he is buried with family at Balmaghie Churchyard. If this is convenient for you please send high res image to the same address.

Jim,

Re your PM - yes, definitely 18219 Robert McDill. I hope to find some time soon to send you what I have. Also, I should be at Kew this Saturday and so will copy his SWB entry. Other DA/ page codes show ages upon discharge, so this may be additional verification that we have the correct man.

Cheers,

Stuart

Stuart

Thanks, I look forward to whatever you can find and the SWB Roll details.

I have also now established from another source that 18219 is the correct man.

Thanks. This supports the details on the DC.
Stuart is hoping to obtain further info next week. I now think there is a fair chance of this becoming a war grave.

Just about to send the information to Jim - Silver War Badge roll entry, KOSB casualty list for July 1916 and newspaper report of his wounding. Thankfully, this particular SWB roll gives age on discharge. All the details (age, address, enlistment date, nature of wound) given in the various sources are consistent throughout, which should help with the submission.
