Baron Playfair was the father of Capt. Playfair (qv) and his memorial plaque is also in the Playfair Aisle of the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity, St Andrews.

He fought in the Russo Turkish war of 1877 and was a Colonel in the Royal Artillery. Between 1903 and 1906 he was Brigadier General of the Coast Defences and was the Honorary Colonel of the 2nd Highland Brigade RFA from 1903 to 1929. He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (TD)
